¹ God, who, at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all,

¹⁵ I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall cursh thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

³ And God said: My spirit shall not remain in man for ever, because he is flesh, and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.

¹³ He said to Noe: The end of all flesh is come before me, the earth is filled with iniquity through them, and I will destroy them with the earth. ¹⁴ Make thee an ark of timber planks: thou shalt make little rooms in the ark, and thou shalt pitch it within and without. ¹⁵ And thus shalt thou make it. The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits: the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. ¹⁶ Thou shalt make a window in the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish the top of it: and the door of the ark thou shalt set in the side: with lower, middle chambers, and third stories shalt thou make it. ¹⁷ Behold, I will bring the waters of a great flood upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life under heaven. All things that are in the earth shall be consumed. ¹⁸ And I will establish my covenant with thee, and thou shalt enter into the ark, thou and thy sons, and thy wife, and the wives of thy sons with thee. ¹⁹ And of every living creature of all flesh, thou shalt bring two of a sort into the ark, that they may live with thee: of the male sex, and the female. ²⁰ Of fowls according to their kind, and of beasts in their kind, and of every thing that creepeth on the earth according to its kind: two of every sort shall go in with thee, that they may live. ²¹ Thou shalt take unto thee of all food that may be eaten, and thou shalt lay it up with thee: and it shall be food for thee and them. ²² And Noe did all things which God commanded him.

¹⁵ And God spoke to Noe, saying: ¹⁶ Go out of the ark, thou and thy wife, thy sons and the wives of thy sons with thee. ¹⁷ All living things that are with thee of all flesh, as well in fowls as in beasts, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, bring out with thee, and go ye upon the earth: increase and multiply upon it. ¹⁸ So Noe went out, he and his sons: his wife, and the wives of his sons with him. ¹⁹ And all living things, and cattle, and creeping things that creep upon the earth, according to their kinds went out of the ark.

¹ And God blessed Noe and his sons. And he said to them: Increase, and multiply, and fill the earth. ² And let the fear and dread of you be upon all the beasts of the earth, and upon all the fowls of the air, and all that move upon the earth: all the fishes of the sea are delivered into your hand. ³ And every thing that moveth, and liveth shall be meat for you: even as the green herbs have I delivered them all to you: ⁴ Saving that flesh with blood you shall not eat. ⁵ For I will require the blood of your lives at the hand of every beast, and at the hand of man, at the hand of every man, and of his brother, will I require the life of man. ⁶ Whosoever shall shed man's blood, his blood shall be shed: for man was made to the image of God. ⁷ But increase you and multiply, and go upon the earth and fill it. ⁸ Thus also said God to Noe, and to his sons with him: ⁹ Behold I will establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you: ¹⁰ And with every living soul that is with you, as well in all birds, as in cattle and beasts of the earth, that are come forth out of the ark, and in all the beasts of the earth. ¹¹ I will establish my covenant with you, and all flesh shall be no more destroyed with the waters of a flood, neither shall there be from henceforth a flood to waste the earth. ¹² And God said: This is the sign of the covenant which I give between me and you, and to every living soul that is with you, for perpetual generations. ¹³ I will set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be the sign of a covenant between me and between the earth. ¹⁴ And when I shall cover the sky with clouds, my bow shall appear in the clouds: ¹⁵ And I will remember my covenant with you, and with every living soul that beareth flesh: and there shall no more be waters of a flood to destroy all flesh. ¹⁶ And the bow shall be in the clouds, and I shall see it, and shall remember the everlasting covenant, that was made between God and every living soul of all flesh which is upon the earth. ¹⁷ And God said to Noe: This shall be the sign of the covenant, which I have established, between me and all flesh upon the earth.

¹ And the Lord said to Abram: Go forth out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and out of thy father's house, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. ² And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and magnify thy name, and thou shalt be blessed. ³ I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee, and IN THEE shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

² And the Lord appeared to him, and said: Go not down into Egypt, but stay in the land that I shall tell thee. ³ And sojourn in it, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee: for to thee and to thy seed I will give all these countries, to fulfil the oath which I swore to Abraham thy father. ⁴ And I will multiply thy seed like the stars of heaven: and I will give to thy posterity all these countries: and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. ⁵ Because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my precepts and commandments, and observed my ceremonies and laws.

¹² And he saw in his sleep a ladder standing upon the earth, and the top thereof touching heaven: the angels also of God ascending and descending by it. ¹³ And the Lord leaning upon the ladder saying to him: I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: The land, wherein thou sleepest, I will give to thee and to thy seed. ¹⁴ And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth: thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and IN THEE and thy seed, all the tribes of the earth SHALL BE BLESSED. ¹⁵ And I will be thy keeper whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee back into this land: neither will I leave thee, till I shall have accomplished all that I have said.

²⁴ He remained alone; and behold, a man wrestled with him till morning. ²⁵ And when he saw that he could not overcome him, he touched the sinew of his thigh, and forthwith it shrank. ²⁶ And he said to him: Let me go, for it is break of day. He answered: I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. ²⁷ And he said: What is thy name? He answered: Jacob. ²⁸ But he said: Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if thou hast been strong against God, how much more shalt thou prevail against men? ²⁹ Jacob asked him: Tell me by what name art thou called? He answered: Why dost thou ask my name? And he blessed him in the same place. ³⁰ And Jacob called the name of the place Phanuel, saying: I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.

² He heard him, by a vision in the night, calling him, and saying to him: Jacob, Jacob. And he answered him: Lo, here I am. ³ God said to him: I am the most mighty God of thy father; fear not, go down into Egypt, for I will make a great nation of thee there. ⁴ I will go down with thee thither, and will bring thee back again from thence: Joseph also shall put his hands upon thy eyes.

¹ Now Moses fed the sheep of Jethro, his father in law, the priest of Madian: and he drove the flock to the inner parts of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, Horeb. ² And the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he saw that the bush was on fire, and was not burnt. ³ And Moses said: I will go, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. ⁴ And when the Lord saw that he went forward to see, he called to him out of the midst of the bush. and said: Moses, Moses. And he answered: Here I am. ⁵ And he said: Come not nigh hither, put off the shoes from thy feet; for the place, whereon thou standest, is holy ground. ⁶ And he said: I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Moses hid his face: for he durst not look at God. ⁷ And the Lord said to him: I have seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of the rigour of them that are over the works; ⁸ And knowing their sorrow, I am come down to deliver them out of the hands of the Egyptians, and to bring them out of that land into a good and spacious land, into a land that floweth with milk and honey, to the places of the Chanaanite, and Hethite, and Amorrhite, and Pherezite, and Hevite, and Jebusite. ⁹ For the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have seen their affliction, wherewith they are oppressed by the Egyptians. ¹⁰ But come, and I will send thee to Pharao, that thou mayst bring forth my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. ¹¹ And Moses said to God: Who am I that I should go to Pharao, and should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? ¹² And he said to him: I will be with thee; and this thou shalt have for a sign that I have sent thee: When thou shalt have brought my people out of Egypt, thou shalt offer sacrifice to God upon this mountain. ¹³ Moses said to God: Lo, I shall go to the children of Israel, and say to them: The God of your fathers hath sent me to you. If they shall say to me: What is his name? What shall I say to them? ¹⁴ God said to Moses: I AM WHO AM. He said: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: HE WHO IS, hath sent me to you. ¹⁵ And God said again to Moses: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob hath sent me to you; this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. ¹⁶ Go and gather together the ancients of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared to me, saying: Visiting I have visited you; and I have seen all that hath befallen you in Egypt. ¹⁷ And I have said the word to bring you forth out of the affliction of Egypt, into the land of the Chanaanite, and Hethite, and Amorrhite, and Pherezite, and Hevite, and Jebusite, to a land that floweth with milk and honey. ¹⁸ And they shall hear thy voice; and thou shalt go in, thou and the ancients of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and thou shalt say to him: The Lord God of the Hebrews hath called us; we will go three days' journey into the wilderness, to sacrifice unto the Lord our God. ¹⁹ But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, but by a mighty hand. ²⁰ For I will stretch forth my hand, and will strike Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst of them: after these he will let you go. ²¹ And I will give favour to this people, in the sight of the Egyptians: and when you go forth, you shall not depart empty: ²² But every woman shall ask of her neighbour, and of her that is in her house, vessels of silver and of gold, and raiment: and you shall put them on your sons and daughters, and shall spoil Egypt.

⁶ He said to them: Hear my words: if there be among you a prophet of the Lord, I will appear to him in a vision, or I will speak to him in a dream. ⁷ But it is not so with my servant Moses who is most faithful in all my house: ⁸ For I speak to him mouth to mouth: and plainly, and not by riddles and figures doth he see the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak ill of my servant Moses?

²⁸ And it shall come to pass after this, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

⁵⁵ As he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

⁷² To perform mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy testament.

²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things that were concerning him.

⁴⁴ And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the psalms, concerning me.

²² Therefore, Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers): and on the sabbath day you circumcise a man.

²⁹ We know that God spoke to Moses: but as to this man, we know not from whence he is.

³⁰ Whereas therefore he was a prophet and knew that God hath sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins one should sit upon his throne.

³² And we declare unto you that the promise which was made to our fathers,

²³ And when they had appointed him a day, there came very many to him unto his lodgings. To whom he expounded, testifying the kingdom of God and persuading them concerning Jesus, out of the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning until evening.

² For if the word spoken by angels became steadfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward:

¹⁰ Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and diligently searched, who prophesied of the grace to come in you. ¹¹ Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in them did signify, when it foretold those sufferings that are in Christ and the glories that should follow. ¹² To whom it was revealed that, not to themselves but to you, they ministered those things which are now declared to you by them that have preached the gospel to you: the Holy Ghost being sent down from heaven, on whom the angels desire to look.

²⁰ Understanding this first: That no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation. ²¹ For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.
