⁵ And God seeing that the wickedness of men was great on the earth, and that all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times,

²¹ And the Lord smelled a sweet savour, and said: I will no more curse the earth for the sake of man: for the imagination and thought of man's heart are prone to evil from his youth: therefore I will no more destroy every living soul as I have done.

¹³ And the men of Sodom were very wicked, and sinners before the face of the Lord beyond measure.

²⁰ And the Lord said: The cry of Sodom and Gomorrha is multiplied, and their sin is become exceedingly grievous. ²¹ I will go down and see whether they have done according to the cry that is come to me; or whether it be not so, that I may know.

¹⁹ And when he shall hear the words of this oath, he should bless himself in his heart saying: I shall have peace, and will walk on in the naughtiness of my heart: and the drunken may consume the thirsty,

¹⁶ How much more is man abominable, and unprofitable, who drinketh iniquity like water?

¹ Unto the end, a psalm for David. The fool hath said in his heart: There is no God. They are corrupt, and are become abominable in their ways: there is none that doth good, no not one. ² The Lord hath looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there be any that understand and seek God. ³ They are all gone aside, they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good: no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they acted deceitfully: the poison of asps is under their lips. Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood. Destruction and unhappiness in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. ⁴ Shall not all they know that work iniquity, who devour my people as they eat bread?

¹⁸ A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,

³ This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell.

¹⁴ Wash thy heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem, that thou mayst be saved: how long shall hurtful thoughts abide in thee?

⁹ The heart is perverse above all things, and unsearchable, who can know it?

⁹ And he said to me: Go in, and see the wicked abominations which they commit here.

¹² And he said to me: Surely thou seest, O son of man, what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every one in private in his chamber: for they say: The Lord seeth us not, the Lord hath forsaken the earth.

¹⁹ For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within and defile a man.

²⁸ And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient. ²⁹ Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness: full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity: whisperers, ³⁰ Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, ³¹ Foolish, dissolute: without affection, without fidelity, without mercy.

⁹ What then? Do we excel them? No, not so. For we have charged both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin. ¹⁰ As it is written: There is not any man just. ¹¹ There is none that understandeth: there is none that seeketh after God. ¹² All have turned out of the way: they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good, there is not so much as one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre: with their tongues they have dealt deceitfully. The venom of asps is under their lips. ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: ¹⁵ Their feet swift to shed blood: ¹⁶ Destruction and misery in their ways: ¹⁷ And the way of peace they have not known. ¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes. ¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law speaketh, it speaketh to them that are in the law: that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may be made subject to God.

¹ And you, when you were dead in your offences and sins, ² Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of this air, of the spirit that now worketh on the children of unbelief: ³ In which also we all conversed in time past, in the desires of our flesh, fulfilling the will of the flesh and of our thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:

³ For we ourselves also were some time unwise, incredulous, erring, slaves to divers desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.
