⁹ And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel are numerous and stronger than we.

⁴ He said to the elders of Madian: So will this people destroy all that dwell in our borders, as the ox is wont to eat the grass to the very roots. Now he was at that time king in Moab. ⁵ He sent therefore messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, a soothsayer, who dwelt by the river of the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, and to say: Behold a people is come out of Egypt, that hath covered the face of the earth, sitting over against me.

² Anger indeed killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the little one.

²⁴ And he increased his people exceedingly: and strengthened them over their enemies. ²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people: and to deal deceitfully with his servants.

²⁸ In the multitude of people is the dignity of the king: and in the small number of the people the dishonour of the prince.

⁴ Anger hath no mercy: nor fury, when it breaketh forth: and who can bear the violence of one provoked?

⁴ Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighbour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.

³ For we ourselves also were some time unwise, incredulous, erring, slaves to divers desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contention in your hearts: glory not and be not liars against the truth. ¹⁵ For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where envying and contention is: there is inconstancy and every evil work.

⁵ Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?
