¹ Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the time of affliction come, and the years draw nigh of which thou shalt say: They please me not:

² And the Lord was with him, and he was a prosperous man in all things: and he dwelt in his master's house:

⁸ But he in no wise consenting to that wicked act said to her: Behold, my master hath delivered all things to me, and knoweth not what he hath in his own house: ⁹ Neither is there any thing which is not in my power, or that he hath not delivered to me, but thee, who art his wife; how then can I do this wicked thing, and sin against my God?

²³ Neither did he himself know any thing, having committed all things to him: for the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper.

²⁸ Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord all the days of his life, he shall be lent to the Lord. And they adored the Lord there. And Anna prayed, and said:

¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the face of the Lord: being a child girded with a linen ephod.

²⁶ But the child Samuel advanced, and grew on, and pleased both the Lord and men.

¹⁹ And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and not one of his words fell to the ground. ²⁰ And all Israel, from Dan to Bersabee, knew that Samuel was a faithful prophet of the Lord. ²¹ And the Lord again appeared in Silo, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Silo, according to the word of the Lord. And the word of Samuel came to pass to all Israel.

⁷ And the Lord said to Samuel: Look not on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature: because I have rejected him, nor do I judge according to the look of man: for man seeth those things that appear, but the Lord beholdeth the heart.

¹² He sent therefore and brought him. Now he was ruddy and beautiful to behold, and of a comely face. And the Lord said: Arise, and anoint him, for this is he. ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward: and Samuel rose up, and went to Ramatha.

³⁶ For I thy servant have killed both a lion and a bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be also as one of them. I will go now, and take away the reproach of the people: for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, who hath dared to curse the army of the living God? ³⁷ And David said: The Lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David: Go, and the Lord be with thee.

³⁵ I am this day fourscore years old, are my senses quick to discern sweet and bitter? or can meat or drink delight thy servant? or can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? why should thy servant be a burden to my lord, the king?

⁶ And Solomon said: Thou hast shewed great mercy to thy servant David, my father, even as he walked before thee in truth, and justice, and an upright heart with thee: and thou hast kept thy great mercy for him, and hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ And now, O Lord God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David, my father: and I am but a child, and know not how to go out and come in; ⁸ And thy servant is in the midst of the people which thou hast chosen, an immense people, which cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give therefore to thy servant an understanding heart, to judge thy people, and discern between good and evil. For who shall be able to judge this people, thy people, which is so numerous? ¹⁰ And the word was pleasing to the Lord, that Solomon had asked such a thing. ¹¹ And the Lord said to Solomon: Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life nor riches, nor the lives of thy enemies, but hast asked for thyself wisdom to discern jndgment; ¹² Behold I have done for thee according to thy words, and have given thee a wise and understanding heart, in so much that there hath been no one like thee before thee, nor shall arise after thee.

¹³ And all Israel shall mourn for him, and shall bury him: for he only of Jeroboam shall be laid in a sepulchre, because in his regard there is found a good word from the Lord, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

¹² And when I am gone from thee, the Spirit of the Lord will carry thee into a place that I know not: and I shall go in and tell Achab; and he, not finding thee, will kill me: but thy servant feareth the Lord from his infancy.

² And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father: he declined not, neither to the right hand, nor to the left. ³ And in the eighth year of his reign, when he was yet a boy, he began to seek the God of his father David: and in the twelfth year after he began to reign, he cleansed Juda and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the idols, and the graven things.

¹⁷ Thou hast taught me, O God, from my youth: and till now I will declare thy wonderful works. ¹⁸ And unto old age and grey hairs: O God, forsake me not, Until I shew forth thy arm to all the generation that is to come: Thy power,

¹⁰ The days of our years in them are threescore and ten years. But if in the strong they be fourscore years: and what is more of them is labour and sorrow. For mildness is come upon us: and we shall be corrected.

¹⁷ I love them that love me: and they that in the morning early watch for me, shall find me.

⁶ It is a proverb: A young man according to his way, even when he is old, he will not depart from it.

⁸ If a man live many years, and have rejoiced in them all, he must remember the darksome time, and the many days: which when they shall come, the things past shall be accused of vanity.

¹⁰ Remove anger from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh. For youth and pleasure are vain.

⁸ And in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, we have patiently waited for thee: thy name, and thy remembrance are the desire of the soul.

²⁷ Teth. It is good for a man, when he hath borne the yoke from his youth.

⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not be defiled with the king's table, nor with the wine which he drank: and he requested the master of the eunuchs that he might not be defiled. ⁹ And God gave to Daniel grace and mercy in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

¹⁷ And to these children God gave knowledge, and understanding in every book, and wisdom: but to Daniel the understanding also of all visions and dreams.

⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knew it not: yea, grey hairs also are spread about upon him, and he is ignorant of it.

And his parents knew it not. ⁴⁴ And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance. ⁴⁵ And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him. ⁴⁶ And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions. ⁴⁷ And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. ⁴⁸ And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? Behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. ⁴⁹ And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my father's business? ⁵⁰ And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them. ⁵¹ And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. ⁵² And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace with God and men.

¹⁶ But Jesus, calling them together, said: Suffer children to come to me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

⁴ And you, fathers, provoke not your children to anger: but bring them up in the discipline and correction of the Lord.

¹⁵ And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures which can instruct thee to salvation by the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
