³⁴ If thy people go out to war against their enemies, by the way that thou shalt send them, and adore thee towards the way of this city, which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name:

² Revenge first the children of Israel on the Madianites, and so thou shalt be gathered to thy people. ³ And Moses forthwith said: Arm of you men to fight, who may take the revenge of the Lord on the Madianites. ⁴ Let a thousand men be chosen out of every tribe of Israel to be sent to the war. ⁵ And they gave a thousand of every tribe, that is to say, twelve thousand men well appointed for battle. ⁶ And Moses sent them with Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest, and he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.

¹ If thou go out to war against thy enemies, and see horsemen and chariots, and the numbers of the enemy's army greater than thine, thou shalt not fear them: because the Lord thy God is with thee, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt. ² And when the battle is now at hand, the priest shall stand before the army, and shall speak to the people in this manner: ³ Hear, O Israel, you join battle this day against your enemies, let not your heart be dismayed, be not afraid, do not give back, fear ye them not: ⁴ Because the Lord your God is in the midst of you, and will fight for you against your enemies, to deliver you from danger.

² Moses my servant is dead: arise, and pass over this Jordan, thou and thy people with thee, into the land which I will give to the children of Israel. ³ I will deliver to you every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, as I have said to Moses. ⁴ From the desert, and from Libanus unto the great river Euphrates, all the land of the Hethites, unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border. ⁵ No man shall be able to resist you all the days of thy life: as I have been with Moses, so will I be with thee: I will not leave thee, nor forsake thee.

¹ And the Lord said to Josue: Fear not, nor be thou dismayed: take with thee all the multitude of fighting men, arise, and go up to the town of Hai: Behold I have delivered into thy hand the king thereof, and the people, and the city, and the land. ² And thou shalt do to the city of Hai, and to the king thereof, as thou hast done to Jericho, and to the king thereof: but the spoils, and all the cattle, you shall take for a prey to yourselves: lay an ambush for the city behind it. ³ And Josue arose, and all the army of the fighting men with him, to go up against Hai: and he sent thirty thousand chosen valiant men in the night, ⁴ And commanded them, saying: Lay an ambush behind the city: and go not very far from it: and be ye all ready. ⁵ But I, and the rest of the multitude which is with me, will approach on the contrary side against the city. And when they shall come out against us, we will flee, and turn our backs, as we did before: ⁶ Till they pursuing us be drawn farther from the city: for they will think that we flee as before. ⁷ And whilst we are fleeing, and they pursuing, you shall rise out of the ambush, and shall destroy the city: and the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands. ⁸ And when you shall have taken it, set it on fire, and you shall do all things so as I have commanded.

¹ After the death of Josue, the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war? ² And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.

³ Now therefore go, and smite Amalec, and utterly destroy all that he hath: spare him not, nor covet anything that is his: but slay both man and woman, child and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

¹⁸ And the Lord sent thee on the way, and said: Go, and kill the sinners of Amalec, and thou shalt fight against them until thou hast utterly destroyed them.

¹³ Building, I have built a house for thy dwelling, to be thy most firm throne for ever.

⁴⁴ If thy people go out to war against their enemies, by what way soever thou shalt send them, they shall pray to thee towards the way of the city, which thou hast chosen, and towards the house, which I have built to thy name: ⁴⁵ And then hear thou in heaven their prayers, and their supplications, and do judgment for them.

⁴ And Juda gathered themselves together to pray to the Lord: and all came out of their cities to make supplication to him.

⁶ And said: O Lord God of our fathers, thou art God in heaven, and rulest over all the kingdoms and nations, in thy hand is strength and power, and no one can resist thee. ⁷ Didst not thou our God kill all the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? ⁸ And they dwelt in it, and built in it a sanctuary to thy name, saying: ⁹ If evils fall upon us, the sword of judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand in thy presence before this house, in which thy name is called upon: and we will cry to thee in our afflictions, and thou wilt hear, and save us. ¹⁰ Now therefore behold the children of Ammon, and of Moab, and mount Seir, through whose lands thou didst not allow Israel to pass, when they came out of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and slew them not, ¹¹ Do the contrary, and endeavour to cast us out of the possession which thou hast delivered to us. ¹² O our God, wilt thou not then judge them? as for us we have not strength enough, to be able to resist this multitude, which cometh violently upon us. But as we know not what to do, we can only turn our eyes to thee. ¹³ And all Juda stood before the Lord with their little ones, and their wives, and their children.

²⁰ And Ezechias the king, and Isaias the prophet the son of Amos, prayed against this blasphemy, and cried out to heaven. ²¹ And the Lord sent an angel, who cut off all the stout men and the warriors, and the captains of the army of the king of the Assyrians: and he returned with disgrace into his own country. And when he was come into the house of his god, his sons that came out of his bowels, slew him with the sword.

³² And what shall be answered to the messengers of the nations? That the Lord hath founded Sion, and the poor of his people shall hope in him.

¹⁰ Now, when Daniel knew this, that is to say, that the law was made, he went into his house: and opening the windows in his upper chamber towards Jerusalem, he knelt down three times a day, and adored and gave thanks before his God, as he had been accustomed to do before.
