¹ And the Lord said to Samuel: How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, whom I have rejected from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and come, that I may send thee to Isai, the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

⁸ Juda, thee shall thy brethren praise: thy hand shall be on the necks of thy enemies; the sons of thy father shall bow down to thee. ⁹ Juda is a lion's whelp: to the prey, my son, thou art gone up: resting thou hast couched as a lion, and as a lioness, who shall rouse him? ¹⁰ The sceptre shall not be taken away from Juda, nor a ruler from his thigh, till he come that is to be sent, and he shall be the expectation of nations.

¹⁷ And the women, her neighbours, congratulating with her, and saying, There is a son born to Noemi, called his name Obed: he is the father of Isai, the father of David. ¹⁸ These are the generations of Phares: Phares begot Esron, ¹⁹ Esron begot Aram, Aram begot Aminadab, ²⁰ Aminadab begot Nahasson, Nahasson begot Salmon, ²¹ Salmon begot Booz, Booz begot Obed, ²² Obed begot Isai, Isai begot David.

¹⁶ To morrow about this same hour I will send thee a man of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be ruler over my people Israel: and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked down upon my people, because their cry is come to me.

¹ And Samuel took a little vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said: Behold, the Lord hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance, and thou shalt deliver his people out of the hands of their enemies, that are round about them. And this shall be a sign unto thee, that God hath anointed thee to be prince.

¹³ And Samuel said to Saul: Thou hast done foolishly, and hast not kept the commandments of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee. And if thou hadst not done thus, the Lord would now have established thy kingdom over Israel for ever: ¹⁴ But thy kingdom shall not continue. The Lord hath sought him a man according to his own heart: and him hath the Lord commanded to be prince over his people, because thou hast not observed that which the Lord commanded.

¹¹ It repenteth me that I have made Saul king: for he hath forsaken me, and hath not executed my commandments. And Samuel was grieved, and he cried unto the Lord all night.

²³ Because it is like the sin of witchcraft, to rebel: and like the crime of idolatry, to refuse to obey. Forasmuch, therefore, as thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord hath also rejected thee from being king.

²⁶ And Samuel said to Saul: I will not return with thee, because thou hath rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

³⁵ And Samuel saw Saul no more till the day of his death: nevertheless, Samuel mourned for Saul, because the Lord repented that he had made him king over Israel.

¹⁵ And the servants of Saul said to him: Behold now an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

²³ So whensoever the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, David took his harp, and played with his hand, and Saul was refreshed, and was better, for the evil spirit departed from him.

¹ And Eliseus the prophet, called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him: Gird up thy loins, and take this little bottle of oil in thy hand, and go to Ramoth Galaad.

³ Then taking the little bottle of oil, thou shalt pour it on his head, and shalt say: Thus saith the Lord: I have anointed thee king over Israel. And thou shalt open the door and flee, and shalt not stay there.

⁶ And he arose, and went into the chamber: and he poured the oil upon his head, and said: Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: I have anointed thee king over Israel, the people of the Lord.

¹⁰ And Ram begot Aminadab, and Aminadab begot Nahasson, prince of the children of Juda. ¹¹ And Nahasson begot Salma, the father of Booz. ¹² And Booz begot Obed, and Obed begot Isai. ¹³ And Isai begot Eliab his firstborn, the second Abinadab, the third Simmaa, ¹⁴ The fourth, Nathanael, the fifth Raddai, ¹⁵ The sixth Asom, the seventh David.

⁶⁸ But he chose the tribe of Juda, mount Sion which he loved. ⁶⁹ And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land which he founded for ever. ⁷⁰ And he chose his servant David, and took him from the flocks of sheep: he brought him from following the ewes great with young, ⁷¹ To feed Jacob his servant and Israel his inheritance.

^{19 (89:20)} Then thou spokest in a vision to thy saints, and saidst: I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of my people. ^{20 (89:21)} I have found David my servant: with my holy oil I have anointed him.

¹ And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up out of his root.

¹⁰ In that day the root of Jesse, who standeth for an ensign of the people, him the Gentiles shall beseech, and his sepulchre shall be glorious.

⁴ Behold I have given him for a witness to the people, for a leader and a master to the Gentiles.

³⁰ Call them reprobate silver, for the Lord hath rejected them.

¹⁶ Therefore do not thou pray for this people, nor take to thee praise and supplication for them: and do not withstand me: for I will not hear thee.

¹⁴ Therefore do not thou pray for this people, and do not take up praise and prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time of their cry to me, in the time of their affliction.

¹¹ And the Lord said to me: Pray not for this people for their good. ¹² When they fast I will not hear their prayers: and if they offer holocausts and victims, I will not receive them: for I will consume them by the sword, and by famine, and by the pestilence.

¹ And the Lord said to me: If Moses and Samuel shall stand before me, my soul is not towards this people: cast them out from my sight, and let them go forth.

²¹ And after that they desired a king: and God gave them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, forty years. ²² And when he had removed him, he raised them up David to be king: to whom giving testimony, he said: I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man according to my own heart, who shall do all my wills.

¹² And again, Isaias saith: There shall be a root of Jesse; and he that shall rise up to rule the Gentiles, in him the Gentiles shall hope.

¹⁶ He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin which is not to death, let him ask: and life shall be given to him who sinneth not to death. There is a sin unto death. For that I say not that any man ask.
