²⁷ But God has chosen the foolish things of the world, that he may put to shame the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world, that he may put to shame the strong things;

² Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established praise because of thine adversaries, to still the enemy and the avenger.

⁵ For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low, he layeth it low to the ground, he bringeth it even to the dust. ⁶ The foot shall tread it down, -- the feet of the afflicted, the steps of the poor.

¹⁴ therefore, behold, I will proceed to do marvellously with this people, to do marvellously, even with wonder, and the wisdom of their wise [men] shall perish, and the understanding of their intelligent ones shall be hid.

¹⁹ and the meek shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the needy among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

¹² And I will leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of Jehovah.

¹⁸ And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers; ¹⁹ and he says to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. ²⁰ And they, having left their trawl-nets, immediately followed him. ²¹ And going on thence he saw other two brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their trawl-nets, and he called them; ²² and they, having left the ship and their father, immediately followed him.

⁹ And Jesus, passing on thence, saw a man sitting at the tax-office, called Matthew, and says to him, Follow me. And he rose up and followed him.

²⁵ At that time, Jesus answering said, I praise thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes.

¹⁶ and said to him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus says to them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

³⁹ And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke thy disciples. ⁴⁰ And he answering said to them, I say unto you, If these shall be silent, the stones will cry out.

¹⁵ for *I* will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your opposers shall not be able to reply to or resist.

¹¹ *He* is the stone which has been set at nought by you the builders, which is become the corner stone. ¹² And salvation is in none other, for neither is there another name under heaven which is given among men by which we must be saved. ¹³ But seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and uninstructed men, they wondered; and they recognised them that they were with Jesus. ¹⁴ And beholding the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to reply; ¹⁵ but having commanded them to go out of the council they conferred with one another, ¹⁶ saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed an evident sign has come to pass through their means is manifest to all that inhabit Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But that it be not further spread among the people, let us threaten them severely no longer to speak to any man in this name. ¹⁸ And having called them, they charged [them] not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. ¹⁹ But Peter and John answering said to them, If it be righteous before God to listen to you rather than to God, judge ye; ²⁰ for as for us *we* cannot refrain from speaking of the things which we have seen and heard. ²¹ But they, having further threatened them, let them go, finding no way how they might punish them, on account of the people, because all glorified God for what had taken place;

⁹ And there arose up certain of those of the synagogue called of freedmen, and of Cyrenians, and of Alexandrians, and of those of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. ¹⁰ And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.

³⁵ This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

⁵⁴ And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.

¹⁸ But some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers attacked him. And some said, What would this chatterer say? and some, He seems to be an announcer of foreign demons, because he announced the glad tidings of Jesus and the resurrection [to them].

²⁴ And after certain days, Felix having arrived with Drusilla his wife, who was a Jewess, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. ²⁵ And as he reasoned concerning righteousness, and temperance, and the judgment about to come, Felix, being filled with fear, answered, Go for the present, and when I get an opportunity I will send for thee;

²⁰ Where [is the] wise? where scribe? where disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassingness of the power may be of God, and not from us:

⁴ For the arms of our warfare [are] not fleshly, but powerful according to God to [the] overthrow of strongholds; ⁵ overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ;

¹⁰ because his letters, he says, [are] weighty and strong, but his presence in the body weak, and his speech naught.

⁵ Hear, my beloved brethren: Has not God chosen the poor as to the world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to them that love him?
