¹ What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

⁹ and do not think to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

²⁴ And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

²⁹ Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' ³⁰ And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' ³¹ He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

³³ They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, 'You will be made free'?"

³⁷ I know that you are Abraham's descendants, yet you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you. ³⁸ I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your Father." ³⁹ They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the things Abraham did, ⁴⁰ but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. ⁴¹ You do the deeds of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father God."

⁵³ Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you claim to be?"

⁵⁶ Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad."

²⁶ "Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.

¹⁶ Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all his descendantsnot only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all

¹ What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

⁷ What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "You shall not covet."

³¹ What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

²² Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I.

⁹ Besides this, we have had fathers of our flesh to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?
