⁵ But they do all their works to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and the tassels of their garments long.

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶ But when you pray, go into your room, shut the door and pray to your Father, who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you. ⁷ And when you pray, do not use empty repetitions as the Gentiles do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. ⁸ Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ⁹ Pray, then, in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. ¹⁰ Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.' ¹⁴ For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. ¹⁶ "And when you fast, do not look gloomy, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

²⁰ And behold, a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment.

¹⁵ He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

⁴⁷ who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive greater condemnation."

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

¹⁸ He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
