⁴⁶ And an argument arose among them as to which of them would be the greatest.

¹ At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" ² He called to him a little child, and put him in the midst of them, ³ and he said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ⁵ Whoever receives one little child like this in my name receives me.

²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to him with her sons and, kneeling down, asked something of him. ²¹ And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." ²² But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able."

⁶ And they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, ⁷ and greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi.'

³³ And they came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you discussing on the road?" ³⁴ But they kept silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. ³⁵ And he sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." ³⁶ And he took a little child, and put him in the midst of them. And taking him in his arms, he said to them, ³⁷ "Whoever receives one of these little children in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me."

⁷ So he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noted how they chose the places of honor, saying to them: ⁸ "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest one more distinguished than you be invited by him; ⁹ and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. ¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

²⁴ A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be considered the greatest. ²⁵ And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. ²⁶ But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the youngest, and he who leads as one who serves. ²⁷ For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am among you as One who serves.

³ For by the grace given to me I say to every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him.

¹⁰ Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; outdo one another in showing honor.

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, ²¹ envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

²⁵ If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. ²⁶ Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

³ Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

⁹ I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say.
