¹⁴ They lusted with yearning in the wilderness, And they tried El in the desolation."

² So the people contended with Moses and said: Give to us water that we may drink. And Moses said to them: Why are you contending with me? Why are you probing Yahweh?

⁴ The rabble which was among them lusted after yearning; and again the sons of Israel lamented also and said:Who shall give us flesh to eat?

³³ The flesh was still between their teeth, ere it was cut off, when the anger of Yahweh grew hot against the people; and Yahweh smote among the people with a very great smiting. ³⁴ One called the name of that place Kibroth Hattaavah, for there they entombed the people, the lusters.

²² all the men who were seeing My glory and My signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, who probed Me these ten times and they did not hearken to My voice,

²² Also at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth-hattaavah you were causing Yahweh to be wrathful.

¹⁸ They probed El in their heart By requesting food for their soul. ¹⁹ So they spoke against Elohim; they said, Is El able to arrange a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Behold, He smote the rock, and waters gushed out, And the watercourses overflowed, But is He able to give bread? Or can He prepare meat for His people?

³⁰ Yet they were not alienated from their yearning; Their food was still in their mouth,

⁴⁰ How often they defied Him in the wilderness; They grieved Him in the desolation. ⁴¹ They were again and again probing El, And the Holy One of Israel they set as a mark."

⁸ You must not be stiffening your heart as in the contention, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, ⁹ Where your fathers probed Me and tested Me, Though they had seen My deeds."

⁶ Now these things became types of us, for us not to be lusters after evil things,

⁹ Nor yet may we be putting the Lord on trial, according as some of them put Him on trial, and perished by serpents."

⁸ You should not be hardening your hearts as in the embitterment, In the day of trial in the wilderness, ⁹ Where your fathers try Me in the testing, And were acquainted with My acts forty years." ¹⁰ Wherefore, "I am disgusted with this generation, and said, 'Ever are they straying in heart; Yet they know not My ways.'"
