¹ Woe to those going down to Egypt for help! On horses are they leaning, and trusting in chariots, for they are many, and on horsemen, for they are very staunch. And they do not heed the Holy One of Israel, and of Yahweh Elohim they do not inquire."

¹⁶ But he shall neither increase horses for himself nor cause his people to return to Egypt in order to get many more horses, for Yahweh, He has said to you:You should not again return in this way further.

⁷ And at that time has Hanani the seer come in unto Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, `Because of your leaning on the king of Aram, and you have not leaned on Yahweh your Elohim, therefore has the force of the king of Aram escaped from your hand.

⁷ These boast in chariots, and those in horses, But as for us, concerning the Name of Yahweh our Elohim, we are ever mindful."

¹⁶ The king is not saved by a great army; A master is not rescued by great vigor; ¹⁷ The horse is a false hope for salvation, And by its vast valor it cannot provide escape."

⁷ And their land is filling with silver and gold, and no end is there to their treasures; and their land is filling with horses, and no end is there to their chariots."

¹² And coming are harp and zither, tambourine and flute. And wine is in their feasts. Yet at the contrivance of Yahweh they are not looking. And the doing of His hands they do not see."

¹³ Yet the people do not return unto their Smiter, and of Yahweh of hosts they do not inquire."

⁷ In that day the human will heed his Maker, and his eyes shall see the Holy One of Israel." ⁸ And he will not heed the altars, the make of his hands, and that made by his fingers he shall not see, even the fetishes of happiness, and the warmed horn-altars."

¹¹ And a confluence will you make for yourselves between the two walls. For the water of the storage reservoir. Yet you do not look to its Maker from the beginning, and its Former from afar you do not see."

¹ Woe, stubborn sons!averring is Yahweh, "To make counsel, yet not from Me, and to libate a libation, yet not of My spirit, that they may add sin on sin!" ² Going down to Egypt, yet they do not ask at My mouth, to be strong in the stronghold of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!" ³ Yet become, for you, shall the stronghold of Pharaoh for shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt for confounding." ⁴ For his chiefs come to be in Zoan, and his messengers are attaining Hanes." ⁵ All are ashamed of a people who are not benefiting them, not for help, and not for benefit, for they are for shame, and even for reproach." ⁶ The load of the beasts of the south rim; in a land of distress and aridity and constraint, the parent lion and the long maned lion are there, yet no water. The puff adder and the burning serpent are making flight. They are bearing on the shoulders of donkeys their estate, and on the humps of camels their treasures, to a people who are not benefiting them for help, but for shame and for reproach." ⁷ And Egypt in vain and for naught is helping you. Wherefore I call as to this, "Their audacity shall cease!"

¹⁶ And saying are you, `No. For on horses will we flee,' therefore you shall flee. And `On the fleet will we ride.' Therefore fleet shall be your pursuers."

⁶ Behold! You trust on a staff, this bruised reed, on Egypt, which, when a man is supported by it, then it enters into his palm and pierces it. So is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all those trusting in him."

⁹ Then how will you reverse the face of one viceroy of my lord's small servants? Yet you yourself are trusting on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen.

⁹ And you are surfeiting the king with oil, and you are increasing your compounds from afar, and you are sending your agents unto a far place, and you are lowering unto the unseen."

⁷ And no one is calling on Your name, rousing himself to hold fast to You, for You conceal Your face from us, and You are dissolving us by means of our depravities."

¹³ For two evils has My people done, Me they have forsaken, a fountain of living waters, To hew out for themselves wells--broken wells, That contain not the waters."

⁵ Thus said Yahweh:Cursed [is] the man who does trust in man, And has made flesh his arm, And from Yahweh whose heart turns."

¹⁵ And he rebels against him, To send his messengers to Egypt, To give to him horses, and much people, Does he prosper? does he escape who is doing these things? And has he broken covenant and escaped?

¹³ According to that which is written in the law of Moses, all this evil comes on us; yet we do not beseech the face of Yahweh our Elohim, so as to turn back from our depravities and to be intelligent in all Thy truth."

⁷ All of them are being warmed as by a stove, and they devour their judges. All their kings fall; there is none among them calling to Me."

¹³ Woe to them! for they wander from Me. Devastation to them! for they transgress against Me. When I am ransoming them, then they speak lies against Me." ¹⁴ And they do not cry out to Me with their heart, for they are howling on their beds; over grain and grape juice they are stirring themselves up; they are withdrawing from Me." ¹⁵ And I disciplined; I made their arm steadfast, yet against Me are they devising evil." ¹⁶ They are not returning to the Supreme; they become as a deceptive bow. Their chiefs shall fall by the sword, because of the menace of their tongue; this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt."

⁵ And Ephraim shall not return to dwell in the land of Egypt, yet the Assyrian, he shall be his king, seeing that they refuse to return to Me."

³ Assyria will not save us; we will not ride on the horse. Nor shall we still say, Our elohim, to the work of our hands. For in You, the orphan is being shown compassion."

⁴ For thus says Yahweh to the house of Israel; Inquire of Me and live. ⁵ Yet you must not inquire of Bethel, and to Gilgal you shall not come, and to Beer-sheba you shall not pass, for Gilgal shall verily be deported, and Bethel shall come to lawlessness." ⁶ Inquire of Yahweh and live, lest He should prosper as fire in the house of Joseph, and it devours, and no one is quenching it for the house of Israel." ⁷ You who are turning judgment to wormwood, and they who stop righteousness on the land--." ⁸ The Maker of the Pleiades and Orion, and He Who is turning the shadow of death to morning, and darkens day to night, He Who is calling to the waters of the sea, and is pouring them out on the surface of the earth--Yahweh, Elohim of hosts, is His name!"
