Amos 4:1 Cross References - CLV

¹ Hear this word, young cows of Bashan, which are in the mountain of Samaria, the ones extorting the poor, the ones bruising the needy, the ones saying to their lords, Bring, and let us drink."

²¹ As for the sojourner, you shall not tyrannize nor oppress him, for you came to be sojourners in the land of Egypt. ²² Any widow or orphan you shall not humiliate. ²³ If you humiliate, yea humiliate him, in case he should cry, yea cry to Me, I shall hear, yea hear his cry, ²⁴ and My anger will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will become widows and your sons orphans. ²⁵ If you obligate My people, the humble with you, with silver, you shall not be as a moneylender to him; you shall not impose interest on him.

⁹ Guard yourself lest there should be in your heart the decadent word, saying:The seventh year is near, the year of the release, so that your eye is evil toward your needy brother, and you give him nothing. Then he may call out to Yahweh concerning you, and it will be held as a sin against you. ¹⁰ You shall give, yea give to him, and your heart shall not feel bad at your giving to him. For owing to this matter Yahweh your Elohim shall bless you in all your work and in every undertaking of your hand. ¹¹ Since the needy shall not leave off from being within the land, therefore I am instructing you, saying:You shall open, yea open your hand to your brother, to your humble and to your needy in your land.

³³ A people you do not know shall devour the fruit of your ground and all your labor, and you will surely be extorted and bruised all the days,

¹⁴ clotted cream of the herd and milk of the flock, with fat of butting rams and rams of Bashan-breed and he-goats, with the fat of the wheat germ. And from the blood of the grape you drank turbid wine. ¹⁵ When Yeshurun grew stout and kicked (you will be stout, thick and burly), then he abandoned Eloah Who had made him and disgraced the Rock of his salvation.

²⁴ and he buys the mount Samaria from Shemer, with two talents of silver, and builds [on] the mount, and calls the name of the city that he has built by the name of Shemer, lord of the hill--Samaria.

¹⁹ For he has maltreated, he has forsaken the poor; He has pillaged a house which he did not build.

⁵ Because of the devastation of the humbled, Because of the groaning of the needy, Now I shall arise, says Yahweh; I shall set him in safety; I shall shine forth for him.

¹² Many young bulls surround me; Sturdy ones of Bashan, they compass me about."

¹² I know that Yahweh shall execute adjudication for the humbled, Right judgment for the needy."

²² Do not pillage the poor, for he is poor, And do not crush the humble one in the gate." ²³ For Yahweh Himself shall contend their contention, And He will defraud their defrauders of their soul."

¹⁰ Do not move away the boundary marker of the widow, And into the fields of the orphans do not enter, ¹¹ For their Redeemer is steadfast; He Himself shall contend their contention against you.

¹ And again I saw all the extortions that are done under the sun; Behold, the tears of those being extorted, And there is no comforter for them; Vigor is in the hand of their extortioners, And there is no comforter for them."

⁸ If you should see extortion of the destitute And pillage of judgment and justice in a province, Do not be amazed over the event, For one lofty official above another lofty official is observing, And other lofty officials are over them."

¹⁷ Leave off the evil! Learn to be good! Inquire for judgment! Make happy the wronged! Judge the orphan! Contend for the widow! ¹⁸ Go, pray and it shall be corrected,saying is Yahweh. "If your sins are coming to be as double dipped scarlet, as snow shall they be white. If they are reddened as crimson, as wool shall they become." ¹⁹ If you are willing and hearken, the good of the land shall you eat." ²⁰ Yet if you are refusing and rebel, by the sword shall you be devoured. For the mouth of Yahweh speaks." ²¹ How becomes a prostitute the town that was faithful Zion! Full of judgment, righteousness lodging in her, yet now murderers!" ²² Your silver becomes dross, your grog is adulterated with water." ²³ Your chiefs are stubborn, and partners of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe, and pursues payments. The orphan they are not judging. And the contention of the widow is not coming to them." ²⁴ Wherefore avers the Lord Yahweh of hosts, the Sturdy One of Israel, "Woe! I shall be comforted over My foes, and avenged on My enemies."

⁸ Woe to those touching house to house, bringing field near to field unto the limits of a place! That from an associate they may withdraw it, and it causes you to dwell all alone within the land!"

⁶ Is not this the fast that I am choosing,saying is Yahweh:"To unloose all the hindrances of wickedness, and to let loose the bunches of the slider bar, and to send the bruised away free, and every slider bar shall you pull away?

²⁶ For the wicked have been found among My people. It looks about the covering of snares, They have set up a trap--men they capture." ²⁷ As a cage full of fowls, So their houses are full of deceit, Therefore they have been great, and are rich." ²⁸ They have been fat, they have shone, Yea, they have overpassed the acts of the evil, Judgment they have not judged, The judgment of the fatherless--and they prosper, And the judgment of the needy they have not judged." ²⁹ For these do not I inspect, an affirmation of Yahweh, On a nation such as this, Does not My soul avenge itself?

⁶ For thus said Yahweh of Hosts:Cut down her wood, And pour out against Jerusalem a mount, She [is] the city to be inspected, Wholly--she is oppression in her midst."

⁶ Sojourner, fatherless, and widow, you oppress not, And innocent blood do not shed in this place, And after other elohims do not walk, for evil to yourselves,

¹¹ Because you rejoice, because you exult, O spoilers of Mine inheritance, Because you increase as a heifer [at] the tender grass, And do cry aloud as bulls,

²⁷ Slay all her kine, they go down to slaughter, Woe [is] on them, for come has their day, The time of their inspection."

³⁴ Devoured us, crushed us, has Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, He has set us [as] an empty vessel, He has swallowed us as a dragon, He has filled his belly with my dainties, He has driven us away."

⁷ Father and mother made light of in you, To a sojourner they dealt oppressively in your midst, Fatherless and widow they oppressed in you."

¹² A bribe they have taken in you to shed blood, Usury and increase you have taken, And cut off your neighbor by oppression, And Me you have forgotten, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh!"

²⁷ Its princes in its midst [are] as wolves, Tearing prey, to shed blood, to destroy souls, For the sake of gaining dishonest gain."

²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, And have taken plunder violently away, And humble and needy have oppressed, And the sojourner oppressed--without judgment."

¹⁸ Flesh of the mighty you do eat, And blood of princes of the earth you drink, Of rams, of lambs, and of he-goats, Of calves, fatlings of Bashan--all of them."

³ and they handle the lot for My people. They are giving the boy for prostitution, and the girl they sell for wine, and they are drinking it."

⁶ Thus says Yahweh, Due to three transgressions of Israel, and due to four, I will not turn it back, due to their selling the righteous for silver, and the needy for the sake of a pair of sandals." ⁷ They are gasping to have the soil of the earth on the head of the poor, and the way of the humble are they turning aside, yet a man and his father are going to the same maiden, that they may violate the holy name of their Elohim." ⁸ On pledged garments are they stretching out beside every altar, and the wine of those fined are they drinking in the house of their elohim."

⁹ Announce it on the citadels in Ashdod, and on the citadels in the land of Egypt. And say, Gather on the mountains of Samaria, and see the vast discomfitures in her midst, and the extortions within her." ¹⁰ They know not to do correctness (averring is Yahweh), who are treasuring violence and devastation in their citadels."

¹¹ Wherefore, because of your trampling on the poor, and the load of cereal you are taking from him:You build houses of trimmed stone, yet you shall not dwell in them; you plant coveted vineyards, yet you shall not drink their wine."

¹ Woe to the tranquil in Zion and those trusting in the mountain of Samaria!--The specified men of the first of the nations, and to them to whom the house of Israel comes."

⁴ Hear this, you who are snuffing up the needy in the morning, and who eradicate the humble of the land, ⁵ saying, when will the new moon pass, that we may retail victuals, and the sabbath, that we may open out the cereal, to make the ephah measure small, and to make the shekel weight great, and to distort the scales by deceit, ⁶ to buy the poor for silver, and the needy for the sake of a pair of sandals? Even the tailings of the cereal we will retail!"

¹ Woe to devisers of lawlessness and contrivers of evil on their beds! In the light of the morning are they executing it, for it is at the disposal of their hand." ² And they covet fields and snatch them, and houses, and bear them away, and they extort the master and his house, the man and his allotment." ³ Wherefore, thus says Yahweh:Behold Me devising an evil against this family, whence you shall not remove your necks. Nor shall you walk haughtily, for it shall be an era of evil."

¹ And He is saying, Oh hear this! you heads of the house of Jacob, and captains of the house of Israel, is it not yours to know judgment? ² You who are hating good and loving evil, snatching their skin off them, and their meat off their bones, ³ and who devour the meat of My people, and their skin they strip off them, and their bones they crunch, and spread them, as meat in the pot, and as flesh in the midst of the caldron."

¹⁰ and you must not extort from a widow or orphan or the sojourner or the humble. And you must not devise evil, each man to his brother, in your heart." ¹¹ Yet they are refusing to attend, and they are giving a stubborn shoulder, and their ears they make heavy against hearing,

⁵ Then I will come near to you for judgment, and become a hastening witness against the enchanters and against the adulterers, and against those who are swearing in My name to falsehood, and against those extorting the hire of the hireling, and those tyrannizing over the widow and taunting the orphan, and turning aside the sojourner, and do not fear Me, says Yahweh of hosts."

¹ Come now, you rich, lament, howling for your wretchedness which is coming on you! " ² Your riches have rotted and your garments have become food for moths. ³ Your gold and silver corrode and their venom will be for a testimony against you, and the venom will be eating your flesh as fire. You hoard in the last days." ⁴ Lo! the wage of the workers, who mow your country places, which has been withheld by you, is crying, and the imploring of the reapers has entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts." ⁵ You luxuriate on the earth, and squander. You nourish your hearts as in a day of slaughter." ⁶ You convict, you murder the just; he is not resisting you."
