⁹ But avoid foolish disputes and genealogies, and strifes and legal fights; for they are unprofitable and futile.

¹ Now concerning the things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

² And though I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

³ Just as I urged you to remain in Ephesus as I traveled into Macedonia, that you should command certain people not to teach differently, ⁴ nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. ⁵ Now the goal of the commandment is love out of a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, ⁶ from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to futile talk, ⁷ desiring to be teachers of the law, not understanding either what they say or what they affirm.

⁷ But reject profane and old wives' tales, and exercise yourself unto godliness.

¹⁴ Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to dispute about words, useful for nothing, for the ruin of the hearers.

¹⁶ But shun profane and empty babblings; for they will advance to more ungodliness.

²³ But reject foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they bring forth fights.
