⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known lust unless the law had said, "You shall not covet."

¹⁷ You shall not covet your neighbor's wife; you shall not covet your neighbor's house; nor his field, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor any of his cattle, nor whatever belongs to your neighbor.

¹ And Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, near the threshing floor of Ahab king of Samaria. ² And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, Give me your vineyard, and I will have it for a garden of herbs, for it is near my house; and I will give you another vineyard better than that one; or if it please you, I will give you money, the price of this your vineyard, and I will have it for a garden of herbs. ³ And Naboth said to Ahab, My God forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers. ⁴ And the spirit of Ahab was troubled, and he lay down upon his bed, and covered his face, and ate no bread.

⁷ The law of the Lord is perfect, converting souls; the testimony of the Lord is faithful, instructing babes. ⁸ The ordinances of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is bright, enlightening the eyes. ⁹ The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever and ever: the judgments of the Lord are true, and justified altogether. ¹⁰ To be desired more than gold, and much precious stone; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. ¹¹ For Your servant keeps to them; in the keeping of them there is great reward. ¹² Who will understand his transgressions? Purge me from my secret sins.

⁹⁶ I have seen an end of all perfection; but Your commandment is very broad.

² And they desired fields, and plundered orphans, and oppressed families, and spoiled a man and his house, even a man and his inheritance.

²⁸ But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman in order to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

¹⁵ And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

³³ I have desired the silver or gold or clothes of no one.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Surely God, the One inflicting wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I speak as a man.)

²⁰ Therefore by works of the law no flesh shall be justified in His sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

¹ What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh?

¹⁵ because the law produces wrath; for where there is no law neither is there transgression.

¹⁵ What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions aroused through the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

⁸ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of lust. For apart from the law sin was dead.

¹¹ For sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, deceived me, and by it, killed me.

¹³ Then has that which is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through that which is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

⁹ For, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not kill," "You shall not steal," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, in this word it is summed up, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

⁵⁶ Now the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

³ But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints;

⁵ Therefore put to death your members on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.

⁵ not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God,

¹⁵ Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ Because everything that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not from the Father but is from the world.
