¹⁵ And the eye of the adulterer has watched for the darkness, saying, Eye shall not see me, and he puts a covering on his face.

¹⁴ And having taken off the garments of her widowhood from her, she put on a veil, and ornamented her face, and sat by the gates of Aenan, which is in the way to Timna, for she saw that Shelah was grown; but she was not given to him as a wife. ¹⁵ And when Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she covered her face, and he did not recognize her.

¹⁴ You shall not commit adultery.

⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her, and went in to her, and he lay with her. And she was purified from her uncleanness, and returned to her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child. ⁶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And Uriah arrived and went in to him, and David asked him how Joab was, and how the people were, and how the war was going. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go to your house, and wash your feet. And Uriah departed from the house of the king, and a portion of meat from the king followed him. ⁹ And Uriah slept at the door of the king with the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. ¹⁰ And they brought David word, saying, Uriah has not gone down to his house. And David said to Uriah, Have you not come from a long journey? Why have you not gone down to your house? ¹¹ And Uriah said to David, The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields; and shall I go into my house to eat and drink, and lie with my wife? How should I do this? As your soul lives, I will not do this thing. ¹² And David said to Uriah, Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will let you go. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the day following. ¹³ And David called him, and he ate before him and drank, and he made him drunk. And he went out in the evening to lie upon his bed with the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

¹² For you did it in secret, but I will do this thing in the sight of all Israel, and in broad daylight.

¹³ And you have said, What does the Mighty One know? Does He judge in the dark? ¹⁴ A cloud is His hiding place, and He shall not be seen; and He passes through the circle of heaven.

¹¹ For he has said in his heart, God has forgotten; He has turned away His face so as never to look.

¹⁸ If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and have cast in your lot with adulterers.

¹¹ And they said, How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?

⁷ And they said, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob understand.

³² But the adulterer through lack of understanding procures destruction to his soul. ³³ He endures both pain and disgrace, and his reproach shall never be wiped off. ³⁴ For the soul of her husband is full of jealousy: he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He will not forego his enmity for any ransom: neither will he be reconciled by many gifts.

⁹ when there happens to be the stillness of night and of darkness: ¹⁰ and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter.

¹² And He said to me, You have seen, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel do, each one of them in their secret chamber; because they have said, The Lord does not see; the Lord has forsaken the earth.

⁹ Then He said to me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah has become exceedingly great: for the land is filled with many nations, and the city is filled with iniquity and uncleanness; because they have said, The Lord has forsaken the earth, The Lord looks not upon it.
