³⁰ In vain have I smitten your children; you have not received correction. A sword has devoured your prophets as a destroying lion; yet you feared not.

¹⁰ And Elijah said, I have been very jealous for the Lord Almighty, because the children of Israel have forsaken You; they have dug down Your altars, and have slain Your prophets with the sword; and I alone am left, and they seek my life, to take it.

¹⁴ And Elijah said, I have been very jealous for the Lord Almighty; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, and they have overthrown Your altars, and have slain Your prophets with the sword! And I alone am left, and they seek my life, to take it.

²¹ And they conspired against him, and stoned him by command of King Joash in the court of the Lord's house.

²² but only troubled him in his affliction. And he departed yet again from the Lord, and King Ahaz said,

¹⁶ Nevertheless they sneered at His messengers, and despised His words, and mocked His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose up against His people, till there was no remedy.

²⁶ But they turned, and revolted from You, and cast Your law behind their backs; and they killed Your prophets, who testified against them to turn them back to You, and they worked great provocations.

⁵ Why should you be smitten anymore, transgressing more and more? The whole head is pained, and the whole heart sad.

¹³ But the people turned not until they were smitten, and they sought not the Lord.

³ O Lord, Your eyes are upon faithfulness. You have scourged them, but they have not grieved; You have consumed them; but they would not receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock; and they would not return.

²⁹ The bellows have failed from the fire, the lead has failed. The silversmith works at his trade in vain; their wickedness is not consumed. ³⁰ Call them reprobate silver, because the Lord has rejected them.

²⁸ This is the nation that has not heeded the voice of the Lord, nor received correction: truth has failed from their mouth.

²⁰ And there was another man prophesying in the name of the Lord, Urijah the son of Shemaiah, of Kirjath Jearim; and he prophesied concerning this land according to all the words of Jeremiah. ²¹ And King Jehoiakim and all the princes heard all his words, and sought to kill him; and Urijah heard it and went to Egypt. ²² And the king sent men to Egypt, ²³ and they brought him out, and brought him into the king; and he struck him with the sword, and cast him into the sepulcher of the children of his people. ²⁴ Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, to prevent his being delivered into the hands of the people, or being killed.

¹⁸ I have heard the sound of Ephraim lamenting, and saying, You have chastened me, and I was chastened; I as a calf was not willingly taught: turn me, and I shall turn; for You are the Lord my God.

¹³ Her scum shall become shameful, because you defiled yourself; and what if you shall be purged no more until I have accomplished My wrath?

² The dove hearkened not to the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord, and she drew not near to her God.

³⁵ And the farmers took his servants, they beat one, and one they killed, and another they stoned. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did to them likewise.

²⁹ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,

³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and you will crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and you will persecute from city to city, ³⁵ so that on you may come all the righteous blood being shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Assuredly I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. ³⁷ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

² And at harvest-time he sent a servant to the farmers, in order that he might receive his part from the fruit of the vineyard. ³ And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. ⁴ Again he sent them another servant, and that one they wounded in the head with stones, and they sent him away shamefully treated. ⁵ And again he sent another, and that one they killed, and so with many others, beating some and killing others. ⁶ Therefore still having one son, his beloved, he even sent him to them last, saying, 'They will respect my son.' ⁷ "But those farmers said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' ⁸ "And taking him they killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Consequently, you bear witness to and approve of the deeds of your fathers; because they indeed killed them, but you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Therefore the wisdom of God also said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,' ⁵⁰ so that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required from this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

³³ Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem. ³⁴ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, like a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers,

¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are against all men,

²⁰ But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent from the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and of wood, which neither are able to see nor to hear nor to walk. ²¹ And they did not repent of their murders, nor of their drugs, nor of their fornication or their thefts.

⁹ And men were burned with severe burns, and men blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent to give Him glory.
