¹¹ And I gave you a king in My anger, and kept him back in My wrath.

⁷ And the Lord said to Samuel, Hear the voice of the people, in whatever they shall say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from reigning over them. ⁸ According to all their doings which they have done to Me, from the day that I brought them out of Egypt until this day, even as they have deserted Me, and served other gods, so they also do to you. ⁹ And now head their voice; only you shall solemnly testify to them, and you shall describe to them the manner of the king who shall reign over them.

¹⁹ And you have this day rejected God, who is Himself your Deliverer out of all your evils and afflictions. And you said, No, but you shall set a king over us: and now stand before the Lord according to your tribes, and according to your families.

¹³ And now behold the king whom you have chosen; and behold, the Lord has set a king over you.

²² And Samuel said, Does the Lord take as great pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in hearing the words of the Lord? Behold, obedience is better than a good sacrifice, and hearkening than the fat of rams. ²³ For sin is as divination; idols bring on pain and grief. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord also shall reject you from being king over Israel.

¹ And the Lord said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse, to Bethlehem; for I have seen among his sons a king for Me.

¹ And the Philistines fought with Israel. And the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and they fell down wounded in the mountain in Gilboa. ² And the Philistines press closely on Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons. ³ And the battle prevailed against Saul, and the archers found him, and wounded him below his ribs. ⁴ And Saul said to his armorbearer, Draw your sword and pierce me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and pierce me through, and mock me. But his armorbearer would not, for he feared greatly: so Saul took his sword and fell upon it. ⁵ And his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, and he also fell upon his sword, and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armorbearer, together in that same day. ⁷ And the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead; and they forsook their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

¹⁵ And the king hearkened not to the people, because the change was from the Lord, that He might establish His word which He spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat. ¹⁶ And all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them. And the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? Neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jesse. Depart, O Israel, to your tents; now feed your own house, David.

²⁶ And Jeroboam said in his heart, Behold, now the kingdom will return to the house of David. ²⁷ If this people shall go up to offer sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of the people will return to their lord, and to their master, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me. ²⁸ And the king took counsel, and went, and made two golden heifers, and said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold, here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. ²⁹ And he put one in Bethel, and he put the other in Dan. ³⁰ And this thing became a sin; and the people went before one as far as Dan, and left the house of the Lord. ³¹ And he made houses on the high places, and made priests of any part of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi. ³² And Jeroboam appointed a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, according to the feast in the land of Judah;

¹ In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. ² And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, only not as the kings of Israel that were before him. ³ Shalmaneser king of the Assyrians came up against him; and Hoshea became his servant, and paid him tribute. ⁴ And the king of the Assyrians found iniquity in Hoshea, in that he sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and brought not a tribute to the king of the Assyrians in that year. And the king of the Assyrians besieged him, and bound him in the prison house.

² By reason of the sins of ungodly men quarrels arise, but a wise man shall quell them.

³ Because now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the Lord.

⁷ Samaria has cast off her king as a twig on the surface of the water.
