^{6 (6:7)} that God took it to heart that He had made man upon the earth, and He pondered it deeply.

¹⁴ And the Lord was prevailed upon to preserve His people.

¹⁹ God is not as a man that He should waver, nor as a son of man that He should be threatened; shall He say and not perform? Shall He speak and not keep His word?

²⁹ O that there were such a heart in them, that they should fear Me, and keep My commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their sons forever!

²⁹ They had not sense to understand; let them reserve these things against the time to come.

³⁶ For the Lord shall judge His people, and shall be comforted over His servants; for He saw that they were utterly weakened, and failed in the hostile invasion, and have become feeble.

¹¹ I greatly regret that I have made Saul to be king; for he has turned back from following Me, and has not kept My word. And Samuel was grieved, and cried to the Lord all night.

²⁹ And Israel shall be divided in two: and God will not turn nor repent, for He is not as a man to repent.

³⁵ And Samuel did not see Saul again till the day of his death, for Samuel mourned after Saul, and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.

¹⁶ And the angel of the Lord stretched out His hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord relented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough now, withhold your hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

¹⁵ And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. And as he was destroying, the Lord saw, and relented of the disaster, and said to the angel that was destroying, Let it suffice; withhold your hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

⁴⁰ How often did they provoke Him in the wilderness, and anger Him in a dry land!

¹³ If My people had hearkened to Me, if Israel had walked in My ways,

¹⁰ Forty years was I grieved with this generation, and said, They do always err in their heart, and they have not known My ways.

⁴⁵ And He remembered His covenant, and relented according to the multitude of His mercy.

⁴ The Lord has sworn, and will not relent, You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.

¹⁵⁸ I beheld men acting foolishly, and I pined away; for they kept not Your oracles.

¹⁸ And if you had hearkened to My commandments, then would your peace have been like a river, and your righteousness as a wave of the sea.

¹⁰ But they disobeyed, and provoked His Holy Spirit; so He turned to be an enemy, He Himself contended against them.

⁸ and that nation turn from all their sins, then will I relent of the disasters which I purposed to do to them. ⁹ And if I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation and kingdom, to rebuild and to plant it; ¹⁰ and they do evil before Me, so as not to heed My voice, then will I relent of the good which I spoke of, to do it to them.

¹⁹ Did Hezekiah and all Judah in any way kill him? Was it not that they feared the Lord, and they made supplication before the Lord, and the Lord relented from the doom which He had pronounced against them? But we have wrought great evil against our own souls.

¹¹ Say to them, Thus says the Lord: As I live, I desire not the death of the ungodly, as that the ungodly should turn from his way and live: turn heartily from your way; for why will you die, O house of Israel?

⁸ How shall I deal with you, O Ephraim? How shall I protect you, O Israel? What shall I do with you? I will make you as Adamah, and as Zeboiim; My heart is turned at once, My repentance is powerfully excited.

¹³ and tear your hearts, and not your garments, and turn to the Lord your God: for He is merciful and compassionate, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy, and relenting of evil.

¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil ways; and God relented of the evil which He had said He would do to them; and He did it not.

⁶ For I am the Lord your God, and I change not;

⁴¹ And as He drew near, seeing the city, He wept over it, ⁴² saying, "If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things pertaining to your peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.

²⁹ For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

³⁰ And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

¹⁰ Therefore I was indignant with that generation, and said, 'They go astray in their heart; and they did not know My ways.'

¹⁷ And with whom was He indignant forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

¹⁷ Thus God, wanting to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His counsel, guaranteed it by an oath, ¹⁸ in order that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong encouragement, who have fled to take hold of the hope being set before us;

¹⁷ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
