¹⁴ For the Levites left the tents of their possession, and went to Judah to Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them so that they should not minister to the Lord.

³⁰ Every tithe of the land, both of the seed of the land, and of the fruit of trees, is the Lord's, holy to the Lord. ³¹ And if a man should at all redeem his tithe, he shall add the fifth part to it, and it shall be his. ³² And every tithe of oxen, and of sheep, and whatsoever may come in numbering under the rod, the tenth shall be holy to the Lord. ³³ You shall not change a good for a bad, or a bad for a good; and if you should at all change it, its equivalent also shall be holy, it shall not be redeemed. ³⁴ These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the sons of Israel on Mount Sinai.

²¹ And behold, I have given to the sons of Levi every tithe in Israel for an inheritance for their services, the work in which they perform in the tabernacle of witness. ²² And the children of Israel shall no more draw near to the tabernacle of witness to incur fatal guilt. ²³ And the Levite himself shall perform the service of the tabernacle of witness; and they shall bear their iniquities, it is a perpetual statute throughout their generations; and in the midst of the children of Israel they shall not receive an inheritance. ²⁴ Because I have given as a distinct portion to the Levites for an inheritance the tithes of the children of Israel, whatsoever they shall offer to the Lord; therefore I said to them, In the midst of the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance. ²⁵ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁶ You shall also speak to the Levites, and shall say to them, If you take the tithe from the children of Israel, which I have given you from them for an inheritance, then shall you separate from it a heave offering to the Lord, a tenth of the tenth. ²⁷ And your heave offerings shall be reckoned to you as grain from the threshing floor, and an offering from the winepress. ²⁸ So shall you also separate them from all the offerings of the Lord out of all your tithes, whatsoever you shall receive from the children of Israel; and you shall give to them of the Lord's offering, to Aaron the priest.

² Give orders to the children of Israel, and they shall give to the Levites cities to dwell in from the lot of their possession, and they shall give to the Levites the suburbs of the cities round about them. ³ And the cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their enclosures shall be for their cattle and all their beasts. ⁴ And the suburbs of the cities which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outwards two thousand cubits round about. ⁵ And you shall measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and your city shall be in the midst of this, and the suburbs of the cities as described.

²⁰ And to the families, even the sons of Caath the Levites, that were left of the sons of Caath, there was given their priests' city, ²¹ out of the tribe of Ephraim; and they gave them the manslayer's city of refuge, Shechem and its suburbs, Gaza and its appendages, and its suburbs; ²² and Beth Horon and its suburbs, four cities; ²³ and the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh and its suburbs; and Gibbethon and its suburbs: ²⁴ and Aijalon and its suburbs; and Garh Rimmon and its suburbs, four cities. ²⁵ And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Tanach and its suburbs; and Jebatha and its suburbs; two cities. ²⁶ In all were given ten cities, and the suburbs of each belonging to them, to the families of the sons of Caath that remained. ²⁷ And Joshua gave to the sons of Gedson the Levites out of the other half-tribe of Manasseh cities set apart for the manslayers, Golan in the country of Bashan, and its suburbs; and Bosora and its suburbs; two cities. ²⁸ And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishion and its suburbs; and Daberath and its suburbs; ²⁹ and Jarmuth and its suburbs; and the Well of Letters and its suburbs; four cities. ³⁰ And out of the tribe of Asher, Basella and its suburbs; and Dabbon and its suburbs; ³¹ and Helkath and its suburbs; and Rehob and its suburbs; four cities. ³² And of the tribe of Nephthali, the city set apart for the manslayer, Kadesh in Galilee, and its suburbs; and Nemmath and its suburbs; and Themmon and its suburbs; three cities. ³³ All the cities of Gershon according to their families were thirteen cities. ³⁴ And to the family of the sons of Merari the Levites that remained, he gave out of the tribe of Zebulun, Maan and its suburbs; and Kartah and its suburbs, ³⁵ and Sella and its suburbs, three cities. ³⁶ And beyond the Jordan over against Jericho, out of the tribe of Reuben, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Bezer in the wilderness; Miso and its suburbs; ³⁷ and Jazer and its suburbs; and Decmon and its suburbs; and Mapha and its suburbs, four cities. ³⁸ And out of the tribe of Gad the city of refuge for the manslayer, both Ramoth in Gilead, and its suburbs; Camin and its suburbs; ³⁹ and Heshbon and its suburbs; and Jazer and its suburbs: the cities were four in all. ⁴⁰ All these cities were given to the sons of Merari according to the families of them that were left out of the tribe of Levi; and their limits were the twelve cities. ⁴¹ All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities, and their suburbs round about these cities: ⁴² a city and the suburbs round about the city to all these cities: and Joshua ceased dividing the land by their borders. And the children of Israel gave a portion to Joshua because of the commandment of the Lord: they gave him the city which he asked. They gave him Thamnasachar in Mount Ephraim; and Joshua built the city, and dwelt in it. And Joshua took the knives of stone in which he circumcised the children of Israel that were born in the desert by the way, and put them in Thamnasachar.

²⁸ And the king took counsel, and went, and made two golden heifers, and said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold, here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. ²⁹ And he put one in Bethel, and he put the other in Dan. ³⁰ And this thing became a sin; and the people went before one as far as Dan, and left the house of the Lord. ³¹ And he made houses on the high places, and made priests of any part of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi. ³² And Jeroboam appointed a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, according to the feast in the land of Judah; ³³ and went up to the altar which he made in Bethel to sacrifice to the heifers which he made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. And he went up to the altar which he had made, on the fifteenth dy in the eighth month, at the feast which he devised out of his own heart; and he made a feast to the children of Israel, and went up to the altar to sacrifice.

³³ And after this Jeroboam turned not from his sin, but he turned and made some of the people priests of the high places. Whoever would, he consecrated him, and he became a priest for the high places.

⁶⁶ And to the members of the families of the sons of Kohath there were also given the cities of their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷ And they gave them the cities of refuge, Shechem and her suburbs in Mount Ephraim, Gezer and her suburbs, ⁶⁸ Jokmeam and her suburbs, Beth Horon and her suburbs, ⁶⁹ Aijalon and her suburbs, and Gath Rimmon and her suburbs. ⁷⁰ And of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Aner and her suburbs, and Bileam and her suburbs, to the sons of Kohath that were left, according to each family. ⁷¹ To the sons of Gershon from the families of the half-tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan of Bashan and her suburbs, and Ashtaroth and her suburbs. ⁷² And out of the tribe of Issachar: Kedesh and her suburbs, Daberath and her suburbs, ⁷³ Ramoth and Anem and their suburbs. ⁷⁴ And of the tribe of Asher: Mashal and her suburbs, Abdon and her suburbs, ⁷⁵ Hukok and her suburbs, and Rehob and her suburbs. ⁷⁶ And of the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee and her suburbs, Hammon and her suburbs, and Kirjathaim and her suburbs. ⁷⁷ To the sons of Merari that were left, they gave out of the tribe of Zebulun: Rimmon and her suburbs, and Tabor and her suburbs. ⁷⁸ And beyond the Jordan, Jericho west of the Jordan, they gave out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness and her suburbs, Jahzah and her suburbs, ⁷⁹ Kedemoth and her suburbs, and Mephaath and her suburbs. ⁸⁰ Out of the tribe of Gad: Ramoth Gilead and her suburbs, Mahanaim and her suburbs, ⁸¹ Heshbon and her suburbs, and Jazer and her suburbs.

⁹ Did you not cast out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make for yourselves priests of the people of any other land? Whoever came to consecrate himself with a calf of the herd and seven rams, he then became a priest to that which is no god.
