²³ And now take away the strange gods that are among you, and set your heart right toward the Lord God of Israel. ²⁴ And the people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord, and we will hearken to his voice.

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do with all your heart return to the Lord, take away the strange gods from the midst of you, and the groves, and prepare your hearts to serve the Lord, and serve him only; and he shall deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.

³⁹ And all the people fell upon their faces, and said, Truly the Lord is God; he is God.

⁴¹ So these nations feared the Lord, and served their graven images: yea, their sons and their son's sons do until this day even as their fathers did.
