⁸ and said, “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.

³ The fragrance of your perfume is pleasing; your name is like perfume poured out. No wonder the maidens adore you.

⁶ You drink wine by the bowlful and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

⁶ Let us buy the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the chaff with the wheat!”

³ Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. ⁴ But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked, ⁵ “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” ⁶ Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it. ⁷ “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial. ⁸ The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.”

³ In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you with deceptive words. The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep.
