¹ “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble. ² Like a flower, he comes forth, then withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. ³ Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You? ⁴ Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one! ⁵ Since his days are determined and the number of his months is with You, and since You have set limits that he cannot exceed, ⁶ look away from him and let him rest, so he can enjoy his day as a hired hand. ⁷ For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail. ⁸ If its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the soil, ⁹ at the scent of water it will bud and put forth twigs like a sapling. ¹⁰ But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last, and where is he? ¹¹ As water disappears from the sea and a river becomes parched and dry, ¹² so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be awakened or roused from sleep. ¹³ If only You would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until Your anger has passed! If only You would appoint a time for me and then remember me! ¹⁴ When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my renewal comes. ¹⁵ You will call, and I will answer; You will desire the work of Your hands. ¹⁶ For then You would count my steps, but would not keep track of my sin. ¹⁷ My transgression would be sealed in a bag, and You would cover over my iniquity. ¹⁸ But as a mountain erodes and crumbles and a rock is dislodged from its place, ¹⁹ as water wears away the stones and torrents wash away the soil, so You destroy a man’s hope. ²⁰ You forever overpower him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away. ²¹ If his sons receive honor, he does not know it; if they are brought low, he is unaware. ²² He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”

⁹ “My travels have lasted 130 years,” Jacob replied. “My years have been few and hard, and they have not matched the years of the travels of my fathers.”

⁷ Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.

¹ “Is not man consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired hand?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope.

²⁵ My days are swifter than a runner; they flee without seeing good.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?

⁴ How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?

⁵ You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah

⁵ Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

¹⁷ So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

²³ Indeed, all his days are filled with grief, and his task is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is futile.

¹¹ Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹⁵ For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.

⁹ For we were born yesterday and know nothing; our days on earth are but a shadow.

²⁵ My days are swifter than a runner; they flee without seeing good. ²⁶ They sweep by like boats of papyrus, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

⁵ You whisk them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning— ⁶ in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers. ⁷ For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence. ⁹ For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh.

⁷ that though the wicked sprout like grass, and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed.

¹² The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

¹¹ My days are like lengthening shadows, and I wither away like grass.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms like a flower of the field; ¹⁶ when the wind passes over, it vanishes, and its place remembers it no more.

⁴ Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.

¹³ Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.

⁶ A voice says, “Cry out!” And I asked, “What should I cry out?” “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field. ⁷ The grass withers and the flowers fall when the breath of the LORD blows on them; indeed, the people are grass. ⁸ The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

¹⁰ But the one who is rich should exult in his low position, because he will pass away like a flower of the field. ¹¹ For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its flower falls and its beauty is lost. So too, the rich man will fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

¹⁴ You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

²⁴ For, “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

¹⁷ What is man that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart upon him, ¹⁸ that You attend to him every morning, and test him every moment?

¹⁹ If it is a matter of strength, He is indeed mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon Him? ²⁰ Even if I were righteous, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, it would declare me guilty.

³² For He is not a man like me, that I can answer Him, that we can take each other to court.

²⁵ Would You frighten a windblown leaf? Would You chase after dry chaff?

²⁷ You put my feet in the stocks and stand watch over all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet.

⁴ what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?

² Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous before You.

³ O LORD, what is man, that You regard him, the son of man that You think of him?

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

³ When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth.

⁴ How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure? ⁵ If even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in His sight, ⁶ how much less man, who is but a maggot, and the son of man, who is but a worm!”

⁵ You whisk them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning—

³⁵ The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

⁶ Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

¹² Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned.

⁸ Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God. ⁹ You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

³ All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

¹⁰ The life of every living thing is in His hand, as well as the breath of all mankind.

¹⁴ When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my renewal comes.

²¹ For what does he care about his household after him, when the number of his months has run out?

¹³ But He is unchangeable, and who can oppose Him? He does what He desires. ¹⁴ For He carries out His decree against me, and He has many such plans.

⁴ “Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.

⁹ You set a boundary they cannot cross, that they may never again cover the earth.

²⁹ When You hide Your face, they are terrified; when You take away their breath, they die and return to dust.

³⁵ All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”

²⁶ And this is the interpretation of the message: MENE means that God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.

³⁰ That very night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans was slain,

²⁴ Seventy weeks are decreed for your people and your holy city to stop their transgression, to put an end to sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

³⁶ Then the king will do as he pleases and will exalt and magnify himself above every god, and he will speak monstrous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been decreed must be accomplished.

²⁰ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?’

²⁶ From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.

²⁷ Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,

¹⁸ the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of Death and of Hades.

⁷ To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the One who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.

¹ “Is not man consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired hand? ² Like a slave he longs for shade; like a hireling he waits for his wages.

¹⁶ I loathe my life! I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

¹⁹ Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to swallow my spittle?

²⁰ Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort,

¹³ Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”

¹ “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. ² He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. ³ About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. ⁴ ‘You also go into my vineyard,’ he said, ‘and I will pay you whatever is right.’ ⁵ So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. ⁶ About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ he asked. ⁷ ‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. So he told them, ‘You also go into my vineyard.’ ⁸ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones hired and moving on to the first.’

¹⁰ He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree.

¹ Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.

⁶ In the days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and fill the whole world with fruit.

¹⁵ But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, and a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven and graze with the beasts on the grass of the earth.

²³ And you, O king, saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump with its roots in the ground, and a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and graze with the beasts of the field till seven times pass him by.’ ²⁴ This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree that the Most High has issued against my lord the king: ²⁵ You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.

¹⁹ Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is like the dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her dead.

²⁴ Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

³⁶ You fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.

³ and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, full of feathers of many colors, came to Lebanon and took away the top of the cedar. ⁴ He plucked off its topmost shoot, carried it to the land of merchants, and planted it in a city of traders. ⁵ He took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil; he placed it by abundant waters and set it out like a willow. ⁶ It sprouted and became a spreading vine, low in height, with branches turned toward him; yet its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and yielded branches and sent out shoots. ⁷ But there was another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him. It stretched out its branches to him from its planting bed, so that he might water it. ⁸ It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters in order to yield branches and bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’ ⁹ So you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Will it flourish? Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it shrivels? All its foliage will wither! It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by its roots. ¹⁰ Even if it is transplanted, will it flourish? Will it not completely wither when the east wind strikes? It will wither on the bed where it sprouted.’”

²² This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take a shoot from the lofty top of the cedar, and I will set it out. I will pluck a tender sprig from its topmost shoots, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. ²³ I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel so that it will bear branches; it will yield fruit and become a majestic cedar. Birds of every kind will nest under it, taking shelter in the shade of its branches. ²⁴ Then all the trees of the field will know that I am the LORD. I bring the tall tree down and make the low tree tall. I dry up the green tree and make the withered tree flourish. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I have done it.’”

¹⁰ Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard, planted by the water; it was fruitful and full of branches because of the abundant waters.

¹⁷ Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root, ¹⁸ do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. ¹⁹ You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” ²⁰ That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. ²¹ For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not spare you either. ²² Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. ²³ And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. ²⁴ For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

³³ When Jacob had finished instructing his sons, he pulled his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and he was gathered to his people.

¹¹ Why did I not perish at birth; why did I not die as I came from the womb?

⁷ Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness. ⁸ The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more. ⁹ As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come back up. ¹⁰ He never returns to his house; his place remembers him no more.

¹⁸ Why then did You bring me from the womb? Oh, that I had died, and no eye had seen me!

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; they will hope for their last breath.”

¹² so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be awakened or roused from sleep.

¹³ If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness, ¹⁴ and say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’ ¹⁵ where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me? ¹⁶ Will it go down to the gates of Sheol? Will we go down together into the dust?”

²⁶ Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.

³² The wicked man is thrown down by his own sin, but the righteous man has a refuge even in death.

⁵⁰ When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.

²² One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried. ²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

¹⁰ At that instant she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

¹⁵ But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as seasonal streams that overflow, ¹⁶ darkened because of the ice and the inflow of melting snow, ¹⁷ but ceasing in the dry season and vanishing from their channels in the heat. ¹⁸ Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go into the wasteland and perish.

⁵ The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed will be parched and empty.

¹⁸ Why is my pain unending, and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You have indeed become like a mirage to me—water that is not there.

¹³ For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest

²¹ Why do You not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”

²¹ before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom, ²² to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”

²⁵ But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth. ²⁶ Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. ²⁷ I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!

²³ Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living.

²⁶ They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on.

¹⁹ For the fates of both men and beasts are the same: As one dies, so dies the other—they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage over the animals, since everything is futile. ²⁰ All go to one place; all come from dust, and all return to dust. ²¹ Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and the spirit of the animal descends into the earth?

⁵ when men fear the heights and dangers of the road, when the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper loses its spring, and the caper berry shrivels—for then man goes to his eternal home and mourners walk the streets.

⁶ Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth below; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and its people will die like gnats. But My salvation will last forever, and My righteousness will never fail.

¹⁷ For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

²² “For just as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, will endure before Me,” declares the LORD, “so your descendants and your name will endure.

² And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt.

³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

¹¹ After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.” ¹² His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.” ¹³ They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.

²¹ Heaven must take Him in until the time comes for the restoration of all things, which God announced long ago through His holy prophets.

²⁰ For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope

¹⁴ So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

¹⁴ For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him. ¹⁵ By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.

⁷ And by that same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

¹⁰ But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare. ¹¹ Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness ¹² as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. ¹³ But in keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them.

¹ Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

¹ But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark. And God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to subside.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary find rest. ¹⁸ The captives enjoy their ease; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ Both small and great are there, and the slave is freed from his master.

⁴ Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor to Your people; visit me with Your salvation,

¹ In that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me.

²⁰ Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourselves a little while until the wrath has passed. ²¹ For behold, the LORD is coming out of His dwelling to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth will reveal her bloodshed and will no longer conceal her slain.

¹ The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; devout men are swept away, while no one considers that the righteous are guided from the presence of evil. ² Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest, lying down in death.

³² No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

⁴² Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

⁷ Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.

³¹ For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”

¹⁵ Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.

¹⁶ After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

¹⁴ Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD!

¹ For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. ² He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm.

²⁵ The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. ²⁶ It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

¹ The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out by His Spirit and set me down in the middle of the valley, and it was full of bones. ² He led me all around among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, and indeed, they were very dry. ³ Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord GOD,” I replied, “only You know.” ⁴ And He said to me, “Prophesy concerning these bones and tell them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! ⁵ This is what the Lord GOD says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will come to life. ⁶ I will attach tendons to you and make flesh grow upon you and cover you with skin. I will put breath within you so that you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’” ⁷ So I prophesied as I had been commanded. And as I prophesied, there was suddenly a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to bone. ⁸ As I looked on, tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin covered them; but there was no breath in them. ⁹ Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and tell the breath that this is what the Lord GOD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, so that they may live!” ¹⁰ So I prophesied as He had commanded me, and the breath entered them, and they came to life and stood on their feet—a vast army. ¹¹ Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look, they are saying, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.’ ¹² Therefore prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘O My people, I will open your graves and bring you up from them, and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. ¹³ Then you, My people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. ¹⁴ I will put My Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.’”

²⁹ Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. ³⁰ In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven. ³¹ But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you: ³² ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

²⁸ Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice ²⁹ and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

⁸ Why would any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?

⁴² So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable. ⁴³ It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. ⁴⁴ It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

⁵¹ Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— ⁵² in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

²¹ who, by the power that enables Him to subject all things to Himself, will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.

¹⁴ For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him. ¹⁵ By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep. ¹⁶ For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise.

⁷ Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains. ⁸ You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.

¹³ The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds.

³ Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?

⁸ Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me?

²² Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak, and You can reply.

⁴ He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that He may judge His people: ⁵ “Gather to Me My saints, who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”

⁸ The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me. O LORD, Your loving devotion endures forever—do not abandon the works of Your hands.

¹⁷ After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

¹⁹ So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

²⁸ And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming.

⁶ that You should seek my iniquity and search out my sin—

¹⁴ If I sinned, You would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity.

⁴ Does He not see my ways and count my every step?

¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches over all my paths.’

²¹ For His eyes are on the ways of a man, and He sees his every step.

⁶ They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps while they wait to take my life.

¹ For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. ² You know when I sit and when I rise; You understand my thoughts from afar. ³ You search out my path and my lying down; You are aware of all my ways. ⁴ Even before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, O LORD.

²¹ For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD examines all his paths.

¹⁹ the One great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are on all the ways of the sons of men, to reward each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

³⁴ “Have I not stored up these things, sealed up within My vaults?

¹⁹ It is said that God lays up one’s punishment for his children. Let God repay the man himself, so he will know it.

¹² The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is stored up.

⁴ You who tear yourself in anger—should the earth be forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place?

²⁵ In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. ²⁶ They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on.

¹² Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills with a balance?

¹⁵ Behold, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff. ¹⁶ You will winnow them, and a wind will carry them away; a gale will scatter them. But you will rejoice in the LORD; you will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁰ Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

¹ If only You would rend the heavens and come down, so that mountains would quake at Your presence,

²⁴ I looked at the mountains, and behold, they were quaking; all the hills were swaying.

⁵¹ At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.

¹⁴ The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.

⁸ Then the second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood,

¹⁷ And behold, I will bring floodwaters upon the earth to destroy every creature under the heavens that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish.

²¹ And every living thing that moved upon the earth perished—birds, livestock, animals, every creature that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind. ²² Of all that was on dry land, everything that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. ²³ And every living thing on the face of the earth was destroyed—man and livestock, crawling creatures and birds of the air; they were blotted out from the earth, and only Noah and those with him in the ark remained.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

⁶ In prosperity I said, “I will never be shaken.” ⁷ O LORD, You favored me; You made my mountain stand strong. When You hid Your face, I was dismayed.

¹¹ Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look, they are saying, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.’

¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?’

¹² When they lifted up their eyes from afar, they could barely recognize Job. They began to weep aloud, and each man tore his robe and threw dust in the air over his head.

⁸ As no man has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has authority over his day of death. As no one can be discharged in wartime, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

⁸ But now their appearance is blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a stick.

²⁰ As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not respond or pay any heed.

⁶ Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away.

¹⁸ I hated all for which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether that man will be wise or foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked skillfully under the sun. This too is futile.

⁵ For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.

⁷ And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood, will be taken away to be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” ⁸ But Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “At least there will be peace and security in my lifetime.”

¹⁶ Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

²⁰ My skin and flesh cling to my bones; I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

²² Why do you persecute me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh?

¹⁹ A man is also chastened on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones, ²⁰ so that he detests his bread, and his soul loathes his favorite food. ²¹ His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden bones protrude.

²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side. ²⁴ So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’
