¹ Then Zophar the Naamathite replied: ² “Should this stream of words go unanswered and such a speaker be vindicated? ³ Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke? ⁴ You have said, ‘My doctrine is sound, and I am pure in Your sight.’ ⁵ But if only God would speak and open His lips against you, ⁶ and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves. ⁷ Can you fathom the deep things of God or discover the limits of the Almighty? ⁸ They are higher than the heavens—what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol—what can you know? ⁹ Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. ¹⁰ If He comes along to imprison you, or convenes a court, who can stop Him? ¹¹ Surely He knows the deceit of men. If He sees iniquity, does He not take note? ¹² But a witless man can no more become wise than the colt of a wild donkey can be born a man! ¹³ As for you, if you direct your heart and lift up your hands to Him, ¹⁴ if you put away the iniquity in your hand, and allow no injustice to dwell in your tents, ¹⁵ then indeed you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and unafraid. ¹⁶ For you will forget your misery, recalling it only as waters gone by. ¹⁷ Your life will be brighter than noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. ¹⁸ You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety. ¹⁹ You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor. ²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; they will hope for their last breath.”

¹¹ Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him.

¹ Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:

² “How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a blustering wind.

³ Is there no end to your long-winded speeches? What provokes you to continue testifying?

² “How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk.

¹¹ May no slanderer be established in the land; may calamity hunt down the man of violence.

¹⁹ When words are many, sin is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise.

¹⁸ Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁹ My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,

⁴ I am a laughingstock to my friends, though I called on God, and He answered. The righteous and upright man is a laughingstock.

⁴ You, however, smear with lies; you are all worthless physicians.

⁹ Would it be well when He examined you? Could you deceive Him like a man?

² “Does a wise man answer with empty counsel or fill his belly with the hot east wind? ³ Should he argue with useless words or speeches that serve no purpose?

² Surely mockers surround me, and my eyes must gaze at their rebellion.

³ Bear with me while I speak; then, after I have spoken, you may go on mocking.

²⁵ If this is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my words to nothing?”

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up derision like water?

¹⁶ Like godless jesters at a feast, they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹⁶ Cover their faces with shame, that they may seek Your name, O LORD.

¹⁷ I never sat with the band of revelers, nor did I celebrate with them. Because Your hand was on me, I sat alone, for You have filled me with indignation.

¹⁴ Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed.

⁸ and wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that anyone who opposes us will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us.

¹⁸ when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”

¹⁰ It still brings me comfort, and joy through unrelenting pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

²⁹ Reconsider; do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my righteousness is at stake. ³⁰ Is there iniquity on my tongue? Can my mouth not discern malice?

²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target, so that I am a burden to You?

² “Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal be righteous before God? ³ If one wished to contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.

⁷ though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from Your hand?

⁴ Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one!

⁵ For Job has declared, ‘I am righteous, yet God has deprived me of justice. ⁶ Would I lie about my case? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’

² “Do you think this is just? You say, ‘I am more righteous than God.’

¹⁵ But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect,

³ If only I knew where to find Him, so that I could go to His seat. ⁴ I would plead my case before Him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would learn how He would answer, and consider what He would say. ⁶ Would He contend with me in His great power? No, He would certainly take note of me. ⁷ Then an upright man could reason with Him, and I would be delivered forever from my Judge.

³⁵ (Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature. Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser compose an indictment.

⁶ I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay. ⁷ Surely no fear of me should terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you. ⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words: ⁹ ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, with no iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Yet God finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy. ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches over all my paths.’ ¹² Behold, you are not right in this matter. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. ¹³ Why do you complain to Him that He answers nothing a man asks? ¹⁴ For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices. ¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls upon men as they slumber on their beds, ¹⁶ He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings ¹⁷ to turn a man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride, ¹⁸ to preserve his soul from the Pit and his life from perishing by the sword.

¹ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: ² “Who is this who obscures My counsel by words without knowledge?

¹ And the LORD said to Job: ² “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.” ³ Then Job answered the LORD: ⁴ “Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth. ⁵ I have spoken once, but I have no answer—twice, but I have nothing to add.”

⁸ Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself?

⁷ After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.

²⁹ The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.

¹³ After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great guilt (though You, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve and have given us such a remnant as this),

⁴ God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and prospered?

⁵ For your iniquity instructs your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.

⁸ Do you listen in on the council of God or limit wisdom to yourself?

¹¹ Are the consolations of God not enough for you, even words spoken gently to you?

²⁸ And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

¹⁴ The LORD confides in those who fear Him, and reveals His covenant to them.

¹⁰ He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our iniquities.

⁴³ Many times He rescued them, but they were bent on rebellion and sank down in their iniquity. ⁴⁴ Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note of their distress. ⁴⁵ And He remembered His covenant with them, and relented by the abundance of His loving devotion. ⁴⁶ He made them objects of compassion to all who held them captive.

²² Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail.

²⁸ But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the latter days. Your dream and the visions that came into your mind as you lay on your bed were these:

⁴⁷ The king said to Daniel, “Your God is truly the God of gods and Lord of kings, the Revealer of Mysteries, since you were able to reveal this mystery.”

³⁵ So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

²⁵ Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel and by the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery concealed for ages past ²⁶ but now revealed and made known through the writings of the prophets by the command of the eternal God, in order to lead all nations to the obedience that comes from faith—

⁹ Rather, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” ¹⁰ But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. ¹¹ For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

⁵ which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.

⁹ the One who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.

¹⁴ Indeed, these are but the fringes of His ways; how faint is the whisper we hear of Him! Who then can understand the thunder of His power?”

²³ The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power! In His justice and great righteousness He does not oppress.

¹⁹ Your path led through the sea, Your way through the mighty waters, but Your footprints were not to be found.

³ Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable.

¹¹ He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.

²⁸ Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out.

²⁷ All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

³³ O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!

¹⁰ But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

¹⁶ “For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

⁸ Though I am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

¹⁸ But will God indeed dwell with man upon the earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built.

¹² Is not God as high as the heavens? Look at the highest stars, how lofty they are!

⁶ Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering.

⁵ Look to the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds high above you.

¹¹ For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His loving devotion for those who fear Him.

⁶ Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. ⁷ Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? ⁸ If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.

¹³ Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His splendor is above the earth and the heavens.

² It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search it out. ³ As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings cannot be searched.

⁹ “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

² Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will pull them down.

¹⁸ will have power, together with all the saints, to comprehend the length and width and height and depth ¹⁹ of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

²⁴ For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. ²⁵ When God fixed the weight of the wind and measured out the waters,

⁵ With awesome deeds of righteousness You answer us, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. ⁶ You formed the mountains by Your power, having girded Yourself with might. ⁷ You stilled the roaring of the seas, the pounding of their waves, and the tumult of the nations. ⁸ Those who live far away fear Your wonders; You make the dawn and sunset shout for joy.

⁹ If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, ¹⁰ even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.

³⁰ How could one man pursue a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up?

¹⁸ For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes, but His hands also heal.

¹² If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’ ¹³ God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of Rahab cower beneath Him.

¹⁴ What He tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man He imprisons cannot be released.

²⁹ But when He remains silent, who can condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,

⁸ Who enclosed the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,

⁸ You have not delivered me to the enemy; You have set my feet in the open.

²⁷ I was the first to tell Zion: ‘Look, here they are!’ And I gave to Jerusalem a herald of good news.

³⁵ All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”

⁷ To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the One who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.

¹³ Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness? ¹⁴ Thick clouds veil Him so He does not see us as He traverses the vault of heaven.’

²¹ For His eyes are on the ways of a man, and He sees his every step. ²² There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide. ²³ For God need not examine a man further or have him approach for judgment.

¹¹ He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never sees.”

¹⁴ But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay it by Your hand. The victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.

²² O LORD, You have seen it; be not silent. O Lord, be not far from me.

¹¹ The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor and the denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be astonished at the matter; for one official is watched by a superior, and others higher still are over them.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? ¹⁰ I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.

² But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

²⁴ But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all. ²⁵ He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.

¹³ Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

²³ Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

¹³ He catches the wise in their craftiness, and sweeps away the plans of the cunning.

⁵ Does a wild donkey bray over fresh grass, or an ox low over its fodder?

² “Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die! ³ But I also have a mind; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these?

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?

⁵ Who set the wild donkey free? Who released the swift donkey from the harness? ⁶ I made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling. ⁷ He scorns the tumult of the city and never hears the shouts of a driver. ⁸ He roams the mountains for pasture, searching for any green thing.

⁵ Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

⁹ Lowborn men are but a vapor, the exalted but a lie. Weighed on the scale, they go up; together they are but a vapor. ¹⁰ Place no trust in extortion, or false hope in stolen goods. If your riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.

²² I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before You.

⁶ A senseless man does not know, and a fool does not understand,

² Surely I am the most ignorant of men, and I lack the understanding of a man. ³ I have not learned wisdom, and I have no knowledge of the Holy One. ⁴ Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—surely you know!

¹⁸ I said to myself, “As for the sons of men, God tests them so that they may see for themselves that they are but beasts.”

²⁴ a wild donkey at home in the wilderness, sniffing the wind in the heat of her desire. Who can restrain her passion? All who seek her need not weary themselves; in mating season they will find her.

²² Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools,

¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but enjoy the company of the lowly. Do not be conceited.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise in this age, he should become a fool, so that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” ²⁰ And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

³ All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

²⁰ O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless?

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. ¹⁵ Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere.

³ Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”

¹⁴ And Rehoboam did evil because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.

³ However, some good is found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land and have set your heart on seeking God.”

⁸ However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—

⁵ But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the Almighty for mercy, ⁶ if you are pure and upright, even now He will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.

²¹ Reconcile now and be at peace with Him; thereby good will come to you. ²² Receive instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.

³¹ Envoys will arrive from Egypt; Cush will stretch out her hands to God.

⁸ Then they will not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose heart was not loyal, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁹ My eyes grow dim with grief. I call to You daily, O LORD; I spread out my hands to You.

⁶ I stretch out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a parched land. Selah

⁴⁷ That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows.

⁷ Consider now, I plead: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Or where have the upright been destroyed?

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? Are not your iniquities endless?

²³ If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. If you remove injustice from your tents

³² Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’

² I will ponder the way that is blameless—when will You come to me? I will walk in my house with integrity of heart.

¹⁵ When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you multiply your prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.

³⁰ Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall. ³¹ Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?

³ Then he told me, “This is the curse that is going out over the face of all the land, for according to one side of the scroll, every thief will be removed; and according to the other side, every perjurer will be removed. ⁴ I will send it out, declares the LORD of Hosts, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of him who swears falsely by My name. It will remain inside his house and destroy it, down to its timbers and stones.”

⁸ Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

⁵ but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. ⁶ “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?

¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction.

²⁶ Surely then you will delight in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.

¹ Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—whom shall I dread?

¹ For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A song. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.

⁶ Surely he will never be shaken; the righteous man will be remembered forever. ⁷ He does not fear bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ His heart is assured; he does not fear, until he looks in triumph on his foes.

⁶ Then I would not be ashamed when I consider all Your commandments. ⁷ I will praise You with an upright heart when I learn Your righteous judgments.

²⁶ He who fears the LORD is secure in confidence, and his children shall have a place of refuge.

¹ The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

¹² And this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in relation to you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God—not in worldly wisdom, but in the grace of God.

⁸ Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension.

²⁸ And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming.

¹⁹ And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence: ²⁰ Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God, ²² and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight.

¹¹ And I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

⁵¹ Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s household.”

¹⁵ But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as seasonal streams that overflow,

¹¹ it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.

⁷ Let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

²⁰ For a man seldom considers the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with the joy of his heart.

¹ In that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me. ² Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. For the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and He also has become my salvation.”

⁴ Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame; do not be intimidated, for you will not be humiliated. For you will forget the shame of your youth and will remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.

⁹ “For to Me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So I have sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you.

¹⁶ Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of truth, and whoever takes an oath in the land will swear by the God of truth. For the former troubles will be forgotten and hidden from My sight.

²¹ A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

¹⁴ “Sir,” I answered, “you know.” So he replied, “These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ For this reason, they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and the One seated on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. ¹⁶ ‘Never again will they hunger, and never will they thirst; nor will the sun beat down upon them, nor any scorching heat.’ ¹⁷ For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd. ‘He will lead them to springs of living water,’ and ‘God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

¹⁰ Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all the assembly and said: “May You be blessed, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.

¹¹ All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and dined with him in his house. They consoled him and comforted him over all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring. ¹² So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. ¹³ And he also had seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch. ¹⁵ No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance among their brothers. ¹⁶ After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. ¹⁷ And so Job died, old and full of years.

⁶ He will bring forth your righteousness like the dawn, your justice like the noonday sun.

¹⁴ In old age they will still bear fruit; healthy and green they will remain,

⁴ Light dawns in the darkness for the upright—for the gracious, compassionate, and righteous.

¹⁸ The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday.

⁸ Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. ⁹ Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry out, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger and malicious talk, ¹⁰ and if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will go forth in the darkness, and your night will be like noonday.

³ So let us know—let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the rain, like the spring showers that water the earth.

⁸ Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light. ⁹ Because I have sinned against Him, I must endure the rage of the LORD, until He argues my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me into the light; I will see His righteousness.

⁶ On that day there will be no light, no cold or frost. ⁷ It will be a day known only to the LORD, without day or night; but when evening comes, there will be light.

² “But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like calves from the stall.

²⁶ The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. ²⁷ Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him what was customary under the Law, ²⁸ Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, saying: ²⁹ “Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, You now dismiss Your servant in peace. ³⁰ For my eyes have seen Your salvation, ³¹ which You have prepared in the sight of all people, ³² a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”

⁵ Your threshing will continue until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will continue until sowing time; you will have your fill of food to eat and will dwell securely in your land. ⁶ And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to fear. I will rid the land of dangerous animals, and no sword will pass through your land.

¹¹ What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope.

²⁷ You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows. ²⁸ Your decisions will be carried out, and light will shine on your ways. ²⁹ When men are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’ then He will save the lowly.

⁵ I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains me.

⁸ I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

⁵ Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

²⁴ When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you rest, your sleep will be sweet. ²⁵ Do not fear sudden danger or the ruin that overtakes the wicked, ²⁶ for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from the snare.

³² The wicked man is thrown down by his own sin, but the righteous man has a refuge even in death.

³ Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; ⁴ perseverance, character; and character, hope. ⁵ And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

²⁷ To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

²⁶ Later, Abimelech came to Isaac from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army. ²⁷ “Why have you come to me?” Isaac asked them. “You hated me and sent me away.” ²⁸ “We can plainly see that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We recommend that there should now be an oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you ²⁹ that you will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.” ³⁰ So Isaac prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank. ³¹ And they got up early the next morning and swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace.

⁶ And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to fear. I will rid the land of dangerous animals, and no sword will pass through your land.

⁸ So now, take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you, for I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken accurately about Me, as My servant Job has.” ⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s request.

¹² The Daughter of Tyre will come with a gift; men of wealth will seek your favor.

⁶ Many seek the favor of the prince, and everyone is a friend of the gift giver.

¹⁴ This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, along with the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will confess to you: ‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”

¹⁴ The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you; all who reviled you will fall facedown at your feet and call you the City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

⁹ Look at those who belong to the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews but are liars instead. I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and they will know that I love you.

¹⁶ then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting disease, and fever that will destroy your sight and drain your life. You will sow your seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.

⁶⁵ Among those nations you will find no repose, not even a resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and a despairing soul.

¹³ Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish. ¹⁴ His confidence is fragile; his security is in a spider’s web.

⁵ If a man denounces his friends for a price, the eyes of his children will fail.

¹⁴ He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

²² It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power.

¹⁶ If I have denied the desires of the poor or allowed the widow’s eyes to fail,

²² There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.

³ I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.

²⁴ What the wicked man dreads will overtake him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

²⁰ Whoever curses his father or mother, his lamp will be extinguished in deepest darkness.

¹⁷ All the while our eyes were failing as we looked in vain for help. We watched from our towers for a nation that could not save us.

¹⁴ Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.

¹⁹ It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake. ²⁰ Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness and not light, even gloom with no brightness in it?

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds shake. Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest with the sword. None of those who flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape. ² Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will pull them down. ³ Though they hide themselves atop Carmel, there I will track them and seize them; and though they hide from Me at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent to bite them.

²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side. ²⁴ So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’ ²⁵ But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony. ²⁶ And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’

³ how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
