¹ “I loathe my own life; I will express my complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul. ² I will say to God: Do not condemn me! Let me know why You prosecute me. ³ Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked? ⁴ Do You have eyes of flesh? Do You see as man sees? ⁵ Are Your days like those of a mortal, or Your years like those of a man, ⁶ that You should seek my iniquity and search out my sin— ⁷ though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from Your hand? ⁸ Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me? ⁹ Please remember that You molded me like clay. Would You now return me to dust? ¹⁰ Did You not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese? ¹¹ You clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews. ¹² You have granted me life and loving devotion, and Your care has preserved my spirit. ¹³ Yet You concealed these things in Your heart, and I know that this was in Your mind: ¹⁴ If I sinned, You would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction. ¹⁶ Should I hold my head high, You would hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me. ¹⁷ You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships assault me in wave after wave. ¹⁸ Why then did You bring me from the womb? Oh, that I had died, and no eye had seen me! ¹⁹ If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the womb to the grave. ²⁰ Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort, ²¹ before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom, ²² to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”

¹⁵ If this is how You are going to treat me, please kill me right now—if I have found favor in Your eyes—and let me not see my own wretchedness.”

⁴ while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”

²⁰ Why is light given to the miserable, and life to the bitter of soul, ²¹ who long for death that does not come, and search for it like hidden treasure, ²² who rejoice and greatly exult when they can find the grave? ²³ Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?

¹⁵ He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth and from the clutches of the powerful. ¹⁶ So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.

²⁰ In famine He will redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.

² “If only my grief could be weighed and placed with my calamity on the scales. ³ For then it would outweigh the sand of the seas—no wonder my words have been rash. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

⁸ If only my request were granted and God would fulfill my hope: ⁹ that God would be willing to crush me, to unleash His hand and cut me off!

²⁶ Do you intend to correct my words, and treat as wind my cry of despair?

¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁶ I loathe my life! I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

²¹ Though I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life.

¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction. ¹⁶ Should I hold my head high, You would hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me.

¹³ If only You would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until Your anger has passed! If only You would appoint a time for me and then remember me!

⁶ Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away? ⁷ Surely He has now exhausted me; You have devastated all my family. ⁸ You have bound me, and it has become a witness; my frailty rises up and testifies against me. ⁹ His anger has torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth at me. My adversary pierces me with His eyes. ¹⁰ They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me. ¹¹ God has delivered me to unjust men; He has thrown me to the clutches of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, but He shattered me; He seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has set me up as His target; ¹³ His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with wound upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty warrior. ¹⁵ I have sewn sackcloth over my skin; I have buried my horn in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is red with weeping, and deep shadows ring my eyes;

⁴ Even if I have truly gone astray, my error concerns me alone.

² “Listen carefully to my words; let this be your consolation to me. ³ Bear with me while I speak; then, after I have spoken, you may go on mocking. ⁴ Is my complaint against a man? Then why should I not be impatient?

³ When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long. ⁴ For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was drained as in the summer heat. Selah ⁵ Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

¹⁵ What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the anguish of my soul.

¹⁷ Surely for my own welfare I had such great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.

³ And now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

⁸ As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint and wished to die, saying, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

⁵ But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the Almighty for mercy, ⁶ if you are pure and upright, even now He will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.

²⁹ Since I am already found guilty, why should I labor in vain?

³¹ Suppose someone says to God, ‘I have endured my punishment; I will offend no more. ³² Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my rebellious acts; remember me according to Your loving devotion, because of Your goodness, O LORD.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. ²⁴ See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting.

² Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous before You.

⁴⁰ Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven: ⁴² “We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven.”

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! ¹⁷ Because of this, our hearts are faint; because of these, our eyes grow dim—

¹ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

³¹ Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment. ³² But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

²⁰ Behold, God does not reject the blameless, nor will He strengthen the hand of evildoers.

²² It is all the same, and so I say, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He blindfolds its judges. If it is not He, then who is it?

¹⁵ You will call, and I will answer; You will desire the work of Your hands.

¹⁶ Still, their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stay far from the counsel of the wicked.

¹⁸ But it was He who filled their houses with good things; so I stay far from the counsel of the wicked.

⁵ For Job has declared, ‘I am righteous, yet God has deprived me of justice. ⁶ Would I lie about my case? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’ ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up derision like water?

¹⁸ who says to kings, ‘You are worthless!’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’ ¹⁹ who is not partial to princes and does not favor rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands.

⁷ He does not take His eyes off the righteous, but He enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever. ⁸ And if men are bound with chains, caught in cords of affliction, ⁹ then He tells them their deeds and how arrogantly they have transgressed.

¹⁷ But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have seized you. ¹⁸ Be careful that no one lures you with riches; do not let a large bribe lead you astray.

² “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.”

⁸ Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself?

³³ For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise His captive people.

⁸ The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me. O LORD, Your loving devotion endures forever—do not abandon the works of Your hands.

⁸ But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand.

¹ Righteous are You, O LORD, when I plead before You. Yet about Your judgments I wish to contend with You: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease? ² You planted them, and they have taken root. They have grown and produced fruit. You are ever on their lips, but far from their hearts. ³ But You know me, O LORD; You see me and test my heart toward You. Drag away the wicked like sheep to the slaughter and set them apart for the day of carnage.

² He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light. ³ Indeed, He keeps turning His hand against me all day long. ⁴ He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones. ⁵ He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. ⁶ He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages. ⁷ He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains. ⁸ Even when I cry out and plead for help, He shuts out my prayer. ⁹ He has barred my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in ambush. ¹¹ He forced me off my path and tore me to pieces; He left me without help. ¹² He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow. ¹³ He pierced my kidneys with His arrows. ¹⁴ I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song all day long. ¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me with wormwood. ¹⁶ He has ground my teeth with gravel and trampled me in the dust. ¹⁷ My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. ¹⁸ So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.”

¹⁹ So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”

³² For He is not a man like me, that I can answer Him, that we can take each other to court.

¹⁵ So He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is prized among men is detestable before God.

¹⁴ The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like a blazing fire.

²⁶ Indeed, God is great—beyond our knowledge; the number of His years is unsearchable.

² Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. ³ You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.” ⁴ For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night.

¹² But You, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; Your renown endures to all generations.

²⁴ I say: “O my God, do not take me in the midst of my days! Your years go on through all generations. ²⁵ In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. ²⁶ They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on. ²⁷ But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.

¹² You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed; but You remain the same, and Your years will never end.”

⁸ Beloved, do not let this one thing escape your notice: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

¹⁴ If I sinned, You would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. ¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness until none is left to be found.

²¹ would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?

³⁴ Moreover, your skirts are stained with the blood of the innocent poor, though you did not find them breaking in. But in spite of all these things

¹² And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men settled in complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’

²⁴ But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all. ²⁵ He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

³⁹ See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

¹⁰ Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

¹³ But He is unchangeable, and who can oppose Him? He does what He desires. ¹⁴ For He carries out His decree against me, and He has many such plans.

⁶ let God weigh me with honest scales, that He may know my integrity.

¹⁴ what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account?

³⁵ (Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature. Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser compose an indictment.

⁷ After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.

⁶ For the LORD guards the path of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice is on my hands,

⁸ The LORD judges the peoples; vindicate me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and integrity. ⁹ Put an end to the evil of the wicked, but establish the righteous, O righteous God who searches hearts and minds.

³ You have tried my heart; You have visited me in the night. You have tested me and found no evil; I have resolved not to sin with my mouth.

¹ Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD! For I have walked with integrity; I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. ² Test me, O LORD, and try me; examine my heart and mind. ³ For Your loving devotion is before my eyes, and I have walked in Your truth. ⁴ I do not sit with deceitful men, nor keep company with hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the mob of evildoers, and refuse to sit with the wicked.

²² Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:

¹ For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. ² You know when I sit and when I rise; You understand my thoughts from afar.

²¹ Do I not hate those who hate You, O LORD, and detest those who rise against You? ²² I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them as my enemies.

¹⁵ Now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”

¹⁰ And then I will expose her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one will deliver her out of My hands.

²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. ²⁹ My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one.”

¹⁷ Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

¹² And this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in relation to you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God—not in worldly wisdom, but in the grace of God.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous, and blameless our conduct was among you who believed.

⁶ And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. ⁷ So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”

³ Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?

⁷³ Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding to learn Your commandments.

⁷ everyone called by My name and created for My glory, whom I have indeed formed and made.”

³ So I went down to the potter’s house and saw him working at the wheel. ⁴ But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay became flawed in his hand; so he formed it into another vessel, as it seemed best for him to do. ⁵ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ⁶ “O house of Israel, declares the LORD, can I not treat you as this potter treats his clay? Just like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel. ⁷ At any time I might announce that a nation or kingdom will be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed. ⁸ But if that nation I warned turns from its evil, then I will relent of the disaster I had planned to bring. ⁹ And if at another time I announce that I will build up and establish a nation or kingdom, ¹⁰ and if it does evil in My sight and does not listen to My voice, then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.

⁷ Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

⁷ Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.

¹⁴ and say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’

¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You lay me in the dust of death.

⁶ Remember, O LORD, Your compassion and loving devotion, for they are from age to age. ⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my rebellious acts; remember me according to Your loving devotion, because of Your goodness, O LORD.

¹⁸ Consider my affliction and trouble, and take away all my sins.

⁴⁷ Remember the briefness of my lifespan! For what futility You have created all men!

³ You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.”

⁴ Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor to Your people; visit me with Your salvation,

⁷ before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

⁹ Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker—one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?

⁶ “O house of Israel, declares the LORD, can I not treat you as this potter treats his clay? Just like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.

²¹ Does not the potter have the right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special occasions and another for common use?

¹⁴ I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. ¹⁶ Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.

¹⁷ His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. ¹⁸ His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are rods of iron.

⁴ And He said to me, “Prophesy concerning these bones and tell them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! ⁵ This is what the Lord GOD says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will come to life. ⁶ I will attach tendons to you and make flesh grow upon you and cover you with skin. I will put breath within you so that you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’” ⁷ So I prophesied as I had been commanded. And as I prophesied, there was suddenly a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to bone. ⁸ As I looked on, tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin covered them; but there was no breath in them.

² For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, ³ because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.

¹⁶ From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.

¹⁹ Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.

⁴ The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

²⁵ Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

²⁵ Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.

²⁸ ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring.’

⁹ When He is at work in the north, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the south, I cannot see Him.

¹³ But He is unchangeable, and who can oppose Him? He does what He desires.

⁶ For there is a right time and procedure to every purpose, though a man’s misery weighs heavily upon him. ⁷ Since no one knows what will happen, who can tell him what is to come?

⁷ I form the light and create the darkness; I bring prosperity and create calamity. I, the LORD, do all these things.

¹⁵ Truly You are a God who hides Himself, O God of Israel, the Savior.

⁹ Remember what happened long ago, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me. ¹⁰ I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will accomplish.’ ¹¹ I summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose from a far-off land. Truly I have spoken, and truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, and I will surely do it.

³⁷ Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?

³³ O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!

¹¹ according to the eternal purpose that He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁷ maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

¹⁸ ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion, forgiving iniquity and transgression. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers upon their children to the third and fourth generation.’

²¹ Why do You not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”

²⁸ I would still dread all my sufferings; I know that You will not acquit me.

²⁶ For You record bitter accusations against me and bequeath to me the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ You put my feet in the stocks and stand watch over all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet.

³ If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities, then who, O Lord, could stand?

⁷ The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings.

¹² If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’

¹⁵ For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only beg my Judge for mercy.

²⁰ Even if I were righteous, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, it would declare me guilty. ²¹ Though I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life.

⁷ though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from Your hand?

⁶ When I remember, terror takes hold, and my body trembles in horror.

¹⁵ Therefore I am terrified in His presence; when I consider this, I fear Him.

⁷ May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust.

¹⁷ The wicked will return to Sheol—all the nations who forget God.

¹⁵³ Look upon my affliction and rescue me, for I have not forgotten Your law.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done.

⁵ Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.”

⁵ You welcome those who gladly do right, who remember Your ways. Surely You were angry, for we sinned. How can we be saved if we remain in our sins? ⁶ Each of us has become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.

²⁰ See, O LORD, how distressed I am! I am churning within; my heart is pounding within me, for I have been most rebellious. Outside, the sword bereaves; inside, there is death.

¹ Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Look and see our disgrace! ² Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. ³ We have become fatherless orphans; our mothers are widows. ⁴ We must buy the water we drink; our wood comes at a price. ⁵ We are closely pursued; we are weary and find no rest. ⁶ We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. ⁷ Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their punishment. ⁸ Slaves rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their hands. ⁹ We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. ¹⁰ Our skin is as hot as an oven with fever from our hunger. ¹¹ Women have been ravished in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah. ¹² Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders receive no respect. ¹³ Young men toil at millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. ¹⁴ The elders have left the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. ¹⁵ Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. ¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! ¹⁷ Because of this, our hearts are faint; because of these, our eyes grow dim— ¹⁸ because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate, patrolled by foxes. ¹⁹ You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation. ²⁰ Why have You forgotten us forever? Why have You forsaken us for so long? ²¹ Restore us to Yourself, O LORD, so we may return; renew our days as of old, ²² unless You have utterly rejected us and remain angry with us beyond measure.

¹⁸ So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”

¹⁰ So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

⁸ But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek;

²⁹ If these men die a natural death, or if they suffer the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me. ³⁰ But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”

⁵⁹ He will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary disasters, severe and lasting plagues, and terrible and chronic sicknesses.

⁹ the One who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.

¹³ I composed myself until the morning. Like a lion He breaks all my bones; from day until night You make an end of me.

¹⁰ He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in ambush.

⁷ So like a lion I will pounce on them; like a leopard I will lurk by the path. ⁸ Like a bear robbed of her cubs I will attack them, and I will tear open their chests. There I will devour them like a lion, like a wild beast would tear them apart.

⁸ The lion has roared—who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken—who will not prophesy?

²¹ I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? After all, the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me.”

⁸ You have bound me, and it has become a witness; my frailty rises up and testifies against me.

⁶ then understand that it is God who has wronged me and drawn His net around me. ⁷ Though I cry out, ‘Violence!’ I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice. ⁸ He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; He has veiled my paths with darkness. ⁹ He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree. ¹¹ His anger burns against me, and He counts me among His enemies.

¹⁹ God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.

¹¹ Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine on its dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his flavor has remained the same, and his aroma is unchanged.

¹⁰ For that night did not shut the doors of the womb to hide the sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ Why did I not perish at birth; why did I not die as I came from the womb?

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; they will hope for their last breath.”

¹⁰ But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last, and where is he?

¹⁰ Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife and conflict in all the land. I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me never be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, saying, “A son is born to you,” bringing him great joy. ¹⁶ May that man be like the cities that the LORD overthrew without compassion. May he hear an outcry in the morning and a battle cry at noon, ¹⁷ because he did not kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb forever enlarged. ¹⁸ Why did I come out of the womb to see only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?

²⁴ The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

⁸ Like a slug that dissolves in its slime, like a woman’s stillborn child, may they never see the sun.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope. ⁷ Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.

¹⁶ I loathe my life! I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath. ¹⁷ What is man that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart upon him, ¹⁸ that You attend to him every morning, and test him every moment? ¹⁹ Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to swallow my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target, so that I am a burden to You? ²¹ Why do You not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”

⁹ For we were born yesterday and know nothing; our days on earth are but a shadow.

²⁵ My days are swifter than a runner; they flee without seeing good. ²⁶ They sweep by like boats of papyrus, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

²¹ Withdraw Your hand from me, and do not let Your terror frighten me.

¹ “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble.

⁵ You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah

¹³ Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms like a flower of the field; ¹⁶ when the wind passes over, it vanishes, and its place remembers it no more.

²³ But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

¹⁴ For surely we will die and be like water poured out on the ground, which cannot be recovered. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises ways that the banished one may not be cast out from Him.

⁵ May darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it; may the blackness of the day overwhelm it.

¹³ For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest

⁸ The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more. ⁹ As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come back up. ¹⁰ He never returns to his house; his place remembers him no more.

¹⁰ But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last, and where is he? ¹¹ As water disappears from the sea and a river becomes parched and dry, ¹² so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be awakened or roused from sleep. ¹³ If only You would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until Your anger has passed! If only You would appoint a time for me and then remember me! ¹⁴ When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my renewal comes.

²² For when only a few years are past I will go the way of no return.

⁴ Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

⁶ You have laid me in the lowest Pit, in the darkest of the depths.

¹¹ Can Your loving devotion be proclaimed in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon? ¹² Will Your wonders be known in the darkness, or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion?

¹¹ I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind with those who dwell in this world.

⁶ They did not ask, ‘Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and pits, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?’

²² There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¹⁹ But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.

¹² Will Your wonders be known in the darkness, or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion?

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the dusky mountains. You wait for light, but He turns it into deep gloom and thick darkness.

²⁶ And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’
