¹³ And they send some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him, that they might catch Him in discourse.

⁶ And Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees having gone out, took counsel how they might trap Him in His words. ¹⁶ And they send their disciples to Him, with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and You teach the way of God in the truth, and to You there is care about no one, for You do not look on the appearance of men. ¹⁷ Therefore tell us, what do You think? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” ¹⁸ But having known their malice, Jesus said, “Hypocrites, why do you test Me? ¹⁹ Show Me the coin of the tribute.” And they presented to Him a denarius. ²⁰ And He says to them, “Whose likeness and whose inscription is this?” ²¹ They say to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He says to them, “Therefore give back to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God.” ²² And having heard, they marveled. And having left Him, they went away.

⁶ And the Pharisees having gone out, immediately began to take counsel with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.

¹⁵ And He was instructing them, saying, “Watch out! Take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

²⁰ And having watched Him, they sent spies, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might catch Him in His word, in order to deliver Him to the rule and to the authority of the governor. ²¹ And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach rightly, and do not receive any person, but teach the way of God on the basis of truth. ²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” ²³ But having perceived their craftiness, He said to them, ²⁴ “Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” And they said, “Caesar’s.” ²⁵ And He said to them, “Therefore give back to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God.” ²⁶ And they were not able to catch Him in His word before the people. And having marveled at His answer, they became silent.
