¹³ τάφος (A grave) ἀνεῳγμένος (having been opened) ὁ (the) λάρυγξ (throat) αὐτῶν (of them is); ταῖς (with the) γλώσσαις (tongues) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐδολιοῦσαν (they keep practicing deceit); ἰὸς (the venom) ἀσπίδων (of vipers) ὑπὸ (is under) τὰ (the) χείλη (lips) αὐτῶν (of them),

³⁴ γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), πῶς (how) δύνασθε (are you able) ἀγαθὰ (good things) λαλεῖν (to speak), πονηροὶ (evil) ὄντες (being)? ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) περισσεύματος (abundance) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart), τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) λαλεῖ (speaks). ³⁵ ὁ (The) ἀγαθὸς (good) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) ἀγαθοῦ (good) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἀγαθά (good things); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) πονηροῦ (evil) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) πονηρά (evil things).

²⁷ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) παρομοιάζετε (you are like) τάφοις (tombs) κεκονιαμένοις (having been whitewashed), οἵτινες (which) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνονται (appear) ὡραῖοι (beautiful). ἔσωθεν (Inside) δὲ (however) γέμουσιν (they are full) ὀστέων (of bones) νεκρῶν (of the dead), καὶ (and) πάσης (of all) ἀκαθαρσίας (impurity). ²⁸ οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνεσθε (appear) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) δίκαιοι (righteous), ἔσωθεν (inwardly) δέ (however) ἐστε (you are) μεστοὶ (full) ὑποκρίσεως (of hypocrisy) καὶ (and) ἀνομίας (lawlessness).

⁴ μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! γινέσθω (Let be) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀληθής (true), πᾶς (every) δὲ (now) ἄνθρωπος (man) ψεύστης (a liar), καθὼς* (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὅπως (That) ἂν (-) δικαιωθῇς (You may be justified) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) σου (of You), καὶ (and) νικήσεις (will prevail) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρίνεσθαί (being judged) σε (Your).” ⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) γλῶσσα (tongue) μικρὸν (a small) μέλος (member) ἐστὶν (is), καὶ (and) μεγάλα (exceeding things) αὐχεῖ (it boasts). ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἡλίκον (a small) πῦρ (fire), ἡλίκην (how great) ὕλην (a forest) ἀνάπτει (it kindles). ⁶ καὶ (Also) ἡ (the) γλῶσσα (tongue is) πῦρ (a fire), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῆς (-) ἀδικίας (of iniquity). ἡ (The) γλῶσσα (tongue) καθίσταται (is set) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), ἡ (-) σπιλοῦσα (defiling) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body), καὶ (and) φλογίζουσα (setting on fire) τὸν (the) τροχὸν (course) τῆς (-) γενέσεως (of nature), καὶ (and itself) φλογιζομένη (being set on fire) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (-) γεέννης (hell). ⁷ Πᾶσα (All) γὰρ (for) φύσις (kinds) θηρίων (of beasts) τε (both) καὶ (and) πετεινῶν (of birds), ἑρπετῶν (of creeping things) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἐναλίων (things of the sea), δαμάζεται (is subdued) καὶ (and) δεδάμασται (has been subdued) τῇ (by the) φύσει (race) τῇ (of the) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human), ⁸ τὴν (-) δὲ (but) γλῶσσαν (the tongue) οὐδεὶς (no one) δαμάσαι (to subdue) δύναται (is able) ἀνθρώπων (of men); ἀκατάστατον (it is an unruly) κακόν (evil), μεστὴ (full) ἰοῦ (of poison) θανατηφόρου (deadly).
