¹⁰ καὶ (And) τότε (then) σκανδαλισθήσονται (will fall away) πολλοὶ (many), καὶ (and) ἀλλήλους (one another) παραδώσουσιν (they will betray), καὶ (and) μισήσουσιν (will hate) ἀλλήλους (one another);

²¹ Παραδώσει (Will deliver up) δὲ (now) ἀδελφὸς (brother), ἀδελφὸν (brother) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death); καὶ (and) πατὴρ (father), τέκνον (child). καὶ (And) ἐπαναστήσονται (will rise up) τέκνα (children) ἐπὶ (against) γονεῖς (parents), καὶ (and) θανατώσουσιν (will put to death) αὐτούς (them).

³⁵ ἦλθον (I came) γὰρ (for) διχάσαι (to set at variance) ‘Ἄνθρωπον (A man) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), Καὶ (and) θυγατέρα (a daughter) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτῆς (of her), Καὶ (and) νύμφην (a daughter-in-law) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) πενθερᾶς (mother-in-law) αὐτῆς (of her), ³⁶ Καὶ (And) ἐχθροὶ (enemies) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) οἱ (the) οἰκιακοὶ (household) αὐτοῦ (of him).’

⁶ καὶ (And) μακάριός (blessed) ἐστιν (is) ὃς (he who) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) σκανδαλισθῇ (shall fall away) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me).”

²¹ οὐκ (no) ἔχει (he has) δὲ (now) ῥίζαν (root) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (himself), ἀλλὰ (but) πρόσκαιρός (temporary) ἐστιν (is); γενομένης (having come) δὲ (however) θλίψεως (tribulation) ἢ (or) διωγμοῦ (persecution) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), εὐθὺς (immediately) σκανδαλίζεται (he falls away).

⁵⁷ καὶ (And) ἐσκανδαλίζοντο (they were offended) ἐν (at) αὐτῷ (Him). Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) προφήτης (a prophet) ἄτιμος (without Honor), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πατρίδι (hometown), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (household) αὐτοῦ (of him).”

²¹ καὶ (And as) ἐσθιόντων (they were eating), αὐτῶν (to them) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) παραδώσει (will betray) με (Me).” ²² Καὶ (And) λυπούμενοι (being grieved) σφόδρα (exceedingly), ἤρξαντο (they began) λέγειν (to say) αὐτῷ (to Him), εἷς (one) ἕκαστος (each), “Μήτι (Not) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (is it), Κύριε (Lord)?” ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Ὁ (The one) ἐμβάψας (having dipped) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τρυβλίῳ (dish), οὗτός (he) με (Me) παραδώσει (will betray). ²⁴ ὁ (-) μὲν (Indeed) Υἱὸς (the Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὑπάγει (goes) καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him); οὐαὶ (woe) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) ἀνθρώπῳ (the man) ἐκείνῳ (to that) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοται (is betrayed). καλὸν (Better) ἦν (would it be) αὐτῷ (for him) εἰ (if) οὐκ (not) ἐγεννήθη (had been born) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκεῖνος (that).”

³¹ Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πάντες (All) ὑμεῖς (you) σκανδαλισθήσεσθε (will fall away) ἐν (because of) ἐμοὶ (Me) ἐν (during) τῇ (the) νυκτὶ (night) ταύτῃ (this). γέγραπται (It has been written) γάρ (for): ‘Πατάξω (I will strike) τὸν (the) ποιμένα (shepherd), Καὶ (and) διασκορπισθήσονται (will be scattered) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τῆς (of the) ποίμνης (flock).’ ³² Μετὰ (After) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) ἐγερθῆναί (being raised), με (I) προάξω (will go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee).” ³³ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰ (If) πάντες (all) σκανδαλισθήσονται (will fall away) ἐν (because of) σοί (You), ἐγὼ (I) οὐδέποτε (never) σκανδαλισθήσομαι (will fall away).” ³⁴ Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐν (during) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (-) νυκτὶ (night), πρὶν (before the) ἀλέκτορα (rooster) φωνῆσαι (crowing), τρὶς (three times) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me).”

¹⁷ καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) ῥίζαν (root) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ἀλλὰ (but) πρόσκαιροί (temporary) εἰσιν (are); εἶτα (then) γενομένης (having arisen) θλίψεως (tribulation) ἢ (or) διωγμοῦ (persecution) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), εὐθὺς (immediately) σκανδαλίζονται (they fall away).

¹⁶ Παραδοθήσεσθε (You will be betrayed) δὲ (then) καὶ (even) ὑπὸ (by) γονέων (parents) καὶ (and) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) καὶ (and) συγγενῶν (relatives) καὶ (and) φίλων (friends), καὶ (and) θανατώσουσιν (they will put to death) ἐξ (some from among) ὑμῶν (you).

⁶⁰ Πολλοὶ (Many) οὖν (therefore), ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπαν (said), “Σκληρός (Difficult) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) οὗτος (this); τίς (who) δύναται (is able) αὐτοῦ (it) ἀκούειν (to hear)?” ⁶¹ Εἰδὼς (Knowing) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself) ὅτι (that) γογγύζουσιν (are grumbling) περὶ (about) τούτου (this) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τοῦτο (This) ὑμᾶς (you) σκανδαλίζει (does offend)?

⁶⁶ Ἐκ (From) τούτου (that time), πολλοὶ (many) ‹ἐκ› (out of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπῆλθον (departed) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὀπίσω (back) καὶ (and) οὐκέτι (no longer) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) περιεπάτουν (walked). ⁶⁷ εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοῖς (to the) δώδεκα (Twelve), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) θέλετε (are wishing) ὑπάγειν (to go away)?”

¹⁵ Οἶδας (You know) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) ἀπεστράφησάν (turned away from) με (me) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἀσίᾳ (Asia), ὧν (among whom) ἐστιν (are) Φύγελος (Phygelus) καὶ (and) Ἑρμογένης (Hermogenes).

¹⁰ Δημᾶς (Demas) γάρ (for) με (me) ἐγκατέλιπεν (has deserted), ἀγαπήσας (having loved) τὸν (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) ἐπορεύθη (he has gone) εἰς (to) Θεσσαλονίκην (Thessalonica), Κρήσκης (Crescens) εἰς (to) Γαλατίαν (Galatia), Τίτος (and Titus) εἰς (to) Δαλματίαν (Dalmatia).

¹⁶ Ἐν (In) τῇ (-) πρώτῃ (first) μου (of me) ἀπολογίᾳ (defense), οὐδείς (no one) μοι (me) παρεγένετο (has stood with), ἀλλὰ (but) πάντες (all) με (me) ἐγκατέλιπον (deserted). μὴ (Not) αὐτοῖς (to them) λογισθείη (may it be charged)!
