³⁵ Καὶ (And) πρωῒ (very early), ἔννυχα (in night) λίαν (still much), ἀναστὰς (having risen up), ἐξῆλθεν (He went out) καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (departed) εἰς (into) ἔρημον (solitary) τόπον (a place), κἀκεῖ (and there) προσηύχετο (He was praying).

²³ καὶ (And) ἀπολύσας (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἀνέβη (He went up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself) προσεύξασθαι (to pray). ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having arrived), μόνος (alone) ἦν (He was) ἐκεῖ (there).

⁴⁶ καὶ (And) ἀποταξάμενος (having taken leave of) αὐτοῖς (them), ἀπῆλθεν (He departed) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) προσεύξασθαι (to pray). ⁴⁷ Καὶ (And) ὀψίας (evening) γενομένης (having come), ἦν (was) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (He) μόνος (alone) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (land). ⁴⁸ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (He having seen) αὐτοὺς (them) βασανιζομένους (straining) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἐλαύνειν (rowing), ἦν (was) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ἄνεμος (wind) ἐναντίος (contrary) αὐτοῖς (to them). περὶ (About) τετάρτην (the fourth) φυλακὴν (watch) τῆς (of the) νυκτὸς (night) ἔρχεται (He comes) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), περιπατῶν (walking) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea), καὶ (and) ἤθελεν (He was wishing) παρελθεῖν (to pass by) αὐτούς (them).

⁴² Γενομένης (Having arrived) δὲ (now) ἡμέρας (daybreak), ἐξελθὼν (having gone out), ἐπορεύθη (He went) εἰς (into) ἔρημον (a solitary) τόπον (place), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐπεζήτουν (were seeking) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) ἦλθον (they came) ἕως (up to) αὐτοῦ (Him) καὶ (and) κατεῖχον (were detaining) αὐτὸν (Him), τοῦ (of the) μὴ (not) πορεύεσθαι (to go) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them). ⁴³ ὁ (-) δὲ (But) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ὅτι (-), “Καὶ (Also) ταῖς (to the) ἑτέραις (other) πόλεσιν (towns) εὐαγγελίσασθαί (to preach the good news) με (Me) δεῖ (it behooves), τὴν (of the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ὅτι (because) ἐπὶ (for) τοῦτο (this) ἀπεστάλην (have I been sent forth).”

¹⁶ αὐτὸς (He Himself) δὲ (now) ἦν (was) ὑποχωρῶν (withdrawing) ἐν (into) ταῖς (the) ἐρήμοις (wilderness) καὶ (and) προσευχόμενος (praying).

¹² Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ταύταις (those), ἐξελθεῖν (went out) αὐτὸν (He) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) προσεύξασθαι (to pray), καὶ (and) ἦν (He was) διανυκτερεύων (spending the night) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (prayer) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (to God).

³⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone forth), ἐπορεύθη (He went) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ἔθος (custom) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives); ἠκολούθησαν (followed) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples). ⁴⁰ γενόμενος (Having come) δὲ (then) ἐπὶ (to) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Προσεύχεσθε (Pray) μὴ (not) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation).” ⁴¹ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἀπεσπάσθη (withdrew) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them) ὡσεὶ (about) λίθου (a stone’s) βολήν (throw), καὶ (and) θεὶς (having fallen on) τὰ (the) γόνατα (knees), προσηύχετο (He was praying), ⁴² λέγων (saying), “Πάτερ (Father), εἰ (if) βούλει (You are willing), παρένεγκε (take away) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) ποτήριον (cup) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me). πλὴν (Yet) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) θέλημά (will) μου (of Me), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (-) σὸν (of You) γινέσθω (be done).” ⁴³ Ὤφθη (Appeared) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἄγγελος (an angel) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἐνισχύων (strengthening) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴⁴ καὶ (And) γενόμενος (having been) ἐν (in) ἀγωνίᾳ (agony), ἐκτενέστερον (more earnestly) προσηύχετο (He was praying). καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (became) ὁ (the) ἱδρὼς (sweat) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡσεὶ (like) θρόμβοι (great drops) αἵματος (of blood), καταβαίνοντες (falling down) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground). ⁴⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) προσευχῆς (prayer), ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples), εὗρεν (He found) κοιμωμένους (sleeping) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) λύπης (grief), ⁴⁶ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (Why) καθεύδετε (are you sleeping)? ἀναστάντες (Having risen up) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (you might enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation).”

³⁴ Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐμὸν (My) βρῶμά (food) ἐστιν (is) ἵνα (that) ποιήσω* (I should do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), καὶ (and) τελειώσω (should finish) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work).

¹⁵ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore), γνοὺς (having known) ὅτι (that) μέλλουσιν (they are about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) καὶ (and) ἁρπάζειν (to seize) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) ποιήσωσιν (they might make Him) βασιλέα (king), ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) αὐτὸς (Himself) μόνος (alone).

¹⁸ διὰ (through) πάσης (all) προσευχῆς (prayer) καὶ (and) δεήσεως (supplication), προσευχόμενοι (praying) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸ (this very thing), ἀγρυπνοῦντες (watching) ἐν (with) πάσῃ (all) προσκαρτερήσει (perseverance) καὶ (and) δεήσει (supplication) περὶ (for) πάντων (all) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (saints),

⁵ Τοῦτο (This) φρονεῖτε (let mind be) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus was):
