¹ Ἐπειδήπερ (Inasmuch as) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπεχείρησαν (have undertaken) ἀνατάξασθαι (to draw up) διήγησιν (a narration) περὶ (concerning) τῶν (the) πεπληροφορημένων (having been accomplished) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us) πραγμάτων (things),

³¹ ταῦτα (these) δὲ (however) γέγραπται (have been written) ἵνα (that) πιστεύητε (you may believe) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἵνα (that) πιστεύοντες (believing), ζωὴν (life) ἔχητε (you may have) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹ Τὸν (The) μὲν (indeed) πρῶτον (first) λόγον (account) ἐποιησάμην (I composed) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all the things), ὦ (O) Θεόφιλε (Theophilus), ὧν (which) ἤρξατο (began) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ποιεῖν (to do) τε (both) καὶ (and) διδάσκειν (to teach), ² ἄχρι (until) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day), ἐντειλάμενος (having given orders) τοῖς (to the) ἀποστόλοις (apostles) διὰ (by) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) οὓς (whom) ἐξελέξατο (He had chosen), ἀνελήμφθη (He was taken up), ³ οἷς (to whom) καὶ (also) παρέστησεν (He presented) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ζῶντα (alive) μετὰ (after) τὸ (the) παθεῖν (suffering) αὐτὸν (of Him) ἐν (with) πολλοῖς (many) τεκμηρίοις (proofs), δι’ (during) ἡμερῶν (days) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) ὀπτανόμενος (being seen) αὐτοῖς (by them) καὶ (and) λέγων (speaking) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ὁμολογουμένως (confessedly), μέγα (great) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) εὐσεβείας (of godliness) μυστήριον (mystery): Ὃς (Who) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐδικαιώθη (was justified) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (the Spirit), ὤφθη (was seen) ἀγγέλοις (by angels), ἐκηρύχθη (was proclaimed) ἐν (among) ἔθνεσιν (the nations), ἐπιστεύθη (was believed on) ἐν (in) κόσμῳ (the world), ἀνελήμφθη (was taken up) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

¹⁷ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Κύριός (the Lord) μοι (me) παρέστη (stood by) καὶ (and) ἐνεδυνάμωσέν (strengthened) με (me), ἵνα (so that) δι’ (through) ἐμοῦ (me) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (proclamation) πληροφορηθῇ (would be fully accomplished), καὶ (and) ἀκούσωσιν (should hear) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles). καὶ (And) ἐρρύσθην (I was delivered) ἐκ (out of) στόματος (the mouth) λέοντος (of the lion).

¹⁶ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) σεσοφισμένοις (cleverly devised) μύθοις (fables) ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed out), ἐγνωρίσαμεν (we have made known) ὑμῖν (to you) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) δύναμιν (power) καὶ (and) παρουσίαν (coming), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπόπται (eyewitnesses) γενηθέντες (having been) τῆς (-) ἐκείνου (of His) μεγαλειότητος (majesty). ¹⁷ λαβὼν (Having received) γὰρ (for) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory), φωνῆς (a voice) ἐνεχθείσης (was brought) αὐτῷ (to Him), τοιᾶσδε (such as follows) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μεγαλοπρεποῦς (Majestic) δόξης (Glory): “Ὁ (The) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (-) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is), εἰς (in) ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εὐδόκησα (have found delight).” ¹⁸ καὶ (And) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) φωνὴν (voice) ἡμεῖς (we) ἠκούσαμεν (heard) ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἐνεχθεῖσαν (having been brought) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), ὄντες (being) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἁγίῳ (holy) ὄρει (mountain). ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔχομεν (we have) βεβαιότερον (more certain) τὸν (the) προφητικὸν (prophetic) λόγον (word), ᾧ (to which) καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you do) προσέχοντες (taking heed), ὡς (as) λύχνῳ (to a lamp) φαίνοντι (shining) ἐν (in) αὐχμηρῷ (a dark) τόπῳ (place), ἕως (until) οὗ (this) ἡμέρα (day) διαυγάσῃ (shall have dawned) καὶ (and) φωσφόρος (the morning star) ἀνατείλῃ (shall have arisen) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you),
