⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐρεῖ (will say) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (as much as) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of Me) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (you did it).’

⁷³ Μετὰ (After) μικρὸν (a little while), δὲ (also) προσελθόντες (having come to him) οἱ (those) ἑστῶτες (standing by), εἶπον (they said) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ἀληθῶς (Surely) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶ (are), καὶ (even) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) λαλιά (speech) σου (of you) δῆλόν (away) σε (you) ποιεῖ (gives).” ⁷⁴ Τότε (Then) ἤρξατο (he began) καταθεματίζειν (to curse) καὶ (and) ὀμνύειν (to swear) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I know) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man)!” Καὶ (And) εὐθέως* (immediately) ἀλέκτωρ (a rooster) ἐφώνησεν (crowed). ⁷⁵ Καὶ (And) ἐμνήσθη (remembered) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) τοῦ (the) ῥήματος (word) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), εἰρηκότος (He having said) ὅτι (-), “Πρὶν (Before the) ἀλέκτορα (rooster) φωνῆσαι (crowing), τρὶς (three times) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me).” καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone) ἔξω (out), ἔκλαυσεν (he wept) πικρῶς (bitterly).

⁷² καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (the second time) ἀλέκτωρ (a rooster) ἐφώνησεν (crowed). Καὶ (And) ἀνεμνήσθη (remembered) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (word) ὡς (that) εἶπεν (had said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (-), “Πρὶν (Before) ἀλέκτορα (the rooster) δὶς (twice) φωνῆσαι (crows), τρίς (three times) με (Me) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny).” καὶ (And) ἐπιβαλὼν (having broken down), ἔκλαιεν (he began to weep).

⁶¹ καὶ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐνέβλεψεν (looked at) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (Peter), καὶ (and) ὑπεμνήσθη (remembered) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), ὡς (how) εἶπεν (He had said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅτι (-), “Πρὶν (Before) ἀλέκτορα (the rooster) φωνῆσαι (crows) σήμερον (today), ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me) τρίς (three times).” ⁶² καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone forth) ἔξω (outside), ἔκλαυσεν (he wept) πικρῶς (bitterly).

²⁴ αὐτὸς (On His part) δὲ (however) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευεν (did entrust) αὑτὸν (Himself) αὐτοῖς (to them), διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) αὐτὸν (His) γινώσκειν (knowing) πάντας (all men), ²⁵ καὶ (and) ὅτι (because) οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) εἶχεν (He had) ἵνα (that) τις (anyone) μαρτυρήσῃ (should testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man); αὐτὸς (He Himself) γὰρ (for) ἐγίνωσκεν (knew) τί (what) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man).

⁸ τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) γὰρ (for) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (you); ἐμὲ (Me) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have).”

³⁸ Ἀποκρίνεται (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Τὴν (The) ψυχήν (life) σου (of you) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (Me) θήσεις (will you lay down)? ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀλέκτωρ (the rooster) φωνήσῃ (will crow), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me) τρίς (three times).

¹⁵ Ἐὰν (If) ἀγαπᾶτέ (you love) με (Me), τὰς (-) ἐντολὰς (commandments) τὰς (-) ἐμὰς (My) τηρήσετε (you will keep).

³⁰ νῦν (Now) οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) οἶδας (You know) πάντα (all things), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) χρείαν (need) ἔχεις (have) ἵνα (that) τίς (anyone) σε (You) ἐρωτᾷ (should ask). ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) πιστεύομεν (we believe) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθες (You came forth).”

⁴ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore), εἰδὼς (knowing) πάντα (all things) τὰ (that) ἐρχόμενα (are coming) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (Him), ἐξῆλθεν (having gone forth) καὶ (also) λέγει (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίνα (Whom) ζητεῖτε (seek you)?”

²⁷ Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (then) ἠρνήσατο (denied) Πέτρος (Peter), καὶ (and) εὐθέως (immediately) ἀλέκτωρ (a rooster) ἐφώνησεν (crowed).

⁸ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) καρδιογνώστης (heart-knowing) Θεὸς (God) ἐμαρτύρησεν (bore witness) αὐτοῖς (to them), δοὺς (having given them) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμῖν (to us),

⁴ ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) πολλῆς (much) θλίψεως (affliction) καὶ (and) συνοχῆς (anguish) καρδίας (of heart) ἔγραψα (I wrote) ὑμῖν (to you) διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) δακρύων (tears), οὐχ (not) ἵνα (that) λυπηθῆτε (you might be grieved), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ἵνα (that) γνῶτε (you might know) ἣν (that) ἔχω (I have) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁵ Εἰ (If) δέ (however) τις (anyone) λελύπηκεν (has caused grief), οὐκ (not) ἐμὲ (me) λελύπηκεν (has he grieved), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part)— ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐπιβαρῶ (I might put it too severely)— πάντας (all) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁶ ἱκανὸν (Sufficient) τῷ (to) τοιούτῳ (such a one) ἡ (is the) ἐπιτιμία (punishment) αὕτη (this), ἡ (which is) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) πλειόνων (majority), ⁷ ὥστε (so that) τοὐναντίον (on the contrary) μᾶλλον (rather) ὑμᾶς (for you) χαρίσασθαι (to forgive) καὶ (and) παρακαλέσαι (to comfort him), μή (lest) πως (perhaps) τῇ (-) περισσοτέρᾳ (by more abundant) λύπῃ (sorrow) καταποθῇ (should be overwhelmed) ὁ (-) τοιοῦτος (such a one).

⁸ Ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) καὶ (also) ἐλύπησα (I have grieved) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐπιστολῇ (letter), οὐ (not) μεταμέλομαι (I do regret it). εἰ (Though) καὶ (even) μετεμελόμην (I did regret it); βλέπω (I see) [γὰρ] (indeed) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) ἐπιστολὴ (letter) ἐκείνη (that), εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πρὸς (for) ὥραν (an hour), ἐλύπησεν (grieved) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁹ νῦν (Now) χαίρω (I rejoice), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved) εἰς (unto) μετάνοιαν (repentance); ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) Θεόν (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) ζημιωθῆτε (you might suffer loss) ἐξ (through) ἡμῶν (us). ¹⁰ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for), κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) λύπη (grief), μετάνοιαν (repentance) εἰς (to) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἀμεταμέλητον (without regret) ἐργάζεται (produces); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) τοῦ (the of the) κόσμου (world) λύπη (grief), θάνατον (death) κατεργάζεται (produces). ¹¹ Ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for), αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (same) τὸ (thing), κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) λυπηθῆναι (to have been grieved), πόσην (how much) κατειργάσατο (has produced) ὑμῖν (in you) σπουδήν (earnestness), ἀλλὰ (but instead) ἀπολογίαν (reasoned defense), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀγανάκτησιν (indignation), ἀλλὰ (but) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιπόθησιν (longing), ἀλλὰ (but) ζῆλον (zeal), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκδίκησιν (vindication)! ἐν (In) παντὶ (everything), συνεστήσατε (you have proved) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἁγνοὺς (innocent) εἶναι (to be) τῷ (in this) πράγματι (matter).

⁸ Οὐ (Not) κατ’ (as) ἐπιταγὴν (a command) λέγω (do I speak), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἑτέρων (of others) σπουδῆς (earnestness), καὶ (also) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) ὑμετέρας (of your) ἀγάπης (love) γνήσιον (genuineness) δοκιμάζων (proving). ⁹ Γινώσκετε (You know) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὅτι (that) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπτώχευσεν (He became poor), πλούσιος (rich) ὤν (being), ἵνα (so that) ὑμεῖς (you) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (through that) πτωχείᾳ (poverty) πλουτήσητε (might be enriched).

³⁰ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) λυπεῖτε (grieve) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἐσφραγίσθητε (you were sealed) εἰς (for) ἡμέραν (the day) ἀπολυτρώσεως (of redemption).

⁶ ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (you greatly rejoice), ὀλίγον (for a little while) ἄρτι (at present), εἰ (if) δέον (being necessary) [ἐστὶν] (it is), λυπηθέντες (having been put to grief) ἐν (by) ποικίλοις (various) πειρασμοῖς (trials),

¹² Διὸ (Therefore) μελλήσω (I will be ready) ἀεὶ (always) ὑμᾶς (you) ὑπομιμνῄσκειν (to remind) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), καίπερ (though) εἰδότας (knowing them) καὶ (and) ἐστηριγμένους (having been strengthened) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρούσῃ (being present in you) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). ¹³ δίκαιον (Right) δὲ (now) ἡγοῦμαι (I esteem it), ἐφ’ (as) ὅσον (long as) εἰμὶ (I am) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) τῷ (-) σκηνώματι (tabernacle), διεγείρειν (to stir up) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (by) ὑπομνήσει (putting you in remembrance), ¹⁴ εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) ταχινή (impending) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀπόθεσις (putting off) τοῦ (of the) σκηνώματός (tabernacle) μου (of me), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐδήλωσέν (has made clear) μοι (to me). ¹⁵ σπουδάσω (I will be diligent) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἑκάστοτε (at every time), ἔχειν (to have) ὑμᾶς (for you) μετὰ (after) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (my) ἔξοδον (departure), τὴν (-) τούτων (these things) μνήμην (a lasting remembrance) ποιεῖσθαι (to make).

⁷ ὑπὲρ (On behalf) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (of the) Ὀνόματος (name) ἐξῆλθον* (they went forth), μηδὲν (nothing) λαμβάνοντες (accepting) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐθνικῶν (Gentiles). ⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) οὖν (therefore) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπολαμβάνειν (to receive) τοὺς (-) τοιούτους (such men), ἵνα (so that) συνεργοὶ (fellow workers) γινώμεθα (we may be) τῇ (in the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).

²³ καὶ (And) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) αὐτῆς (of her) ἀποκτενῶ (I will kill) ἐν (with) θανάτῳ (death), καὶ (and) γνώσονται (will know) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) ἐκκλησίαι (churches) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the One) ἐραυνῶν (searching) νεφροὺς (affections) καὶ (and) καρδίας (hearts); καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) ὑμῖν (of you) ἑκάστῳ (to each) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁹ ἐγὼ (I) ὅσους (as many as) ἐὰν (if) φιλῶ (might love), ἐλέγχω (I rebuke) καὶ (and) παιδεύω (discipline); ζήλευε (be zealous) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) μετανόησον (repent).
