¹ Λέγω (I ask) οὖν (then), μὴ (not) ἀπώσατο (did reject) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰσραηλίτης (an Israelite) εἰμί (am), ἐκ (of the) σπέρματος (seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), φυλῆς (of the tribe) Βενιαμίν (of Benjamin).

⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) οὖν (then) καὶ (also), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) καιρῷ (time), λεῖμμα* (a remnant) κατ’ (according to) ἐκλογὴν (the election) χάριτος (of grace) γέγονεν (there has been). ⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) χάριτι (by grace), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐξ (from) ἔργων (works); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) οὐκέτι (no longer) γίνεται (would be) χάρις (grace).

³ Λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) χάριτος (grace) τῆς (-) δοθείσης (having been given) μοι (to me) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), μὴ (not) ὑπερφρονεῖν (to be high-minded) παρ’ (above) ὃ (what) δεῖ (it behooves you) φρονεῖν (to think), ἀλλὰ (but) φρονεῖν (to think) εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) σωφρονεῖν (to be sober-minded), ἑκάστῳ (to each) ὡς (as) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐμέρισεν (has allotted) μέτρον (a measure) πίστεως (of faith).

⁶ ἐγὼ (I) ἐφύτευσα (planted), Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos) ἐπότισεν (watered), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ηὔξανεν (kept it growing).

⁷ τίς (Who) γάρ (for) σε (you) διακρίνει (makes different)? τί (What) δὲ (now) ἔχεις (have you) ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔλαβες (you did receive)? εἰ (If) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἔλαβες (you did receive it), τί (why) καυχᾶσαι (boast you) ὡς (as) μὴ (not) λαβών (having received it)?

² δι’ (by) οὗ (which) καὶ (also) σῴζεσθε (you are being saved), τίνι (to the) λόγῳ (word) εὐηγγελισάμην (I proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰ (if) κατέχετε (you hold fast); ἐκτὸς (unless) εἰ (if) μὴ (not), εἰκῇ (in vain) ἐπιστεύσατε (you have believed).

⁵ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτῶν (ourselves) ἱκανοί (sufficient) ἐσμεν (we are) λογίσασθαί (to reckon) τι (anything) ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἑαυτῶν (ourselves), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) ἱκανότης (sufficiency) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐκ (is of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God),

¹ Συνεργοῦντες (Working together) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) παρακαλοῦμεν (we exhort) μὴ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δέξασθαι (to receive) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹² Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) τολμῶμεν (dare we) ἐνκρῖναι (to classify) ἢ (or) συνκρῖναι (to compare) ἑαυτούς (ourselves with) τισιν (some) τῶν (-) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) συνιστανόντων (commending); ἀλλὰ (but) αὐτοὶ (these) ἐν (by) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) μετροῦντες (measuring), καὶ (and) συνκρίνοντες (comparing) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) ἑαυτοῖς (with themselves), οὐ (not) συνιᾶσιν (understand). ¹³ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) εἰς (into) τὰ (the things) ἄμετρα (beyond measure) καυχησόμεθα (will boast), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) μέτρον (measure) τοῦ (of the) κανόνος (area) οὗ (that) ἐμέρισεν (has assigned) ἡμῖν (to us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), μέτρου (a measure) ἐφικέσθαι (to reach) ἄχρι (as far as) καὶ (also) ὑμῶν (you). ¹⁴ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) μὴ (not) ἐφικνούμενοι (reaching) εἰς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ὑπερεκτείνομεν (we are overextending) ἑαυτούς (ourselves); ἄχρι (as far as) γὰρ (for) καὶ (also) ὑμῶν (you), ἐφθάσαμεν (we came) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ¹⁵ οὐκ (not) εἰς (to) τὰ (the things) ἄμετρα (beyond measure) καυχώμενοι (boasting) ἐν (in) ἀλλοτρίοις (others’) κόποις (labors), ἐλπίδα (hope) δὲ (however) ἔχοντες (having), αὐξανομένης (increasing) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) μεγαλυνθῆναι (to be enlarged) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) κανόνα (area) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) περισσείαν (abundance), ¹⁶ εἰς (so as) τὰ (that) ὑπερέκεινα (beyond) ὑμῶν (you) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach the gospel), οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) ἀλλοτρίῳ (another’s) κανόνι (area), εἰς (in) τὰ (things) ἕτοιμα (ready) καυχήσασθαι (to boast).

²³ διάκονοι (Servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εἰσιν (are they)? παραφρονῶν (As being beside myself) λαλῶ (I speak) ὑπὲρ (above measure): ἐγώ (I too), ἐν (in) κόποις (labors) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) φυλακαῖς (imprisonments) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) πληγαῖς (beatings) ὑπερβαλλόντως (above measure), ἐν (in) θανάτοις (deaths) πολλάκις (often). ²⁴ Ὑπὸ (From) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews) πεντάκις (five times) τεσσεράκοντα (forty lashes) παρὰ (minus) μίαν (one) ἔλαβον (I received). ²⁵ τρὶς (Three times) ἐραβδίσθην (I was beaten with rods), ἅπαξ (once) ἐλιθάσθην (I was stoned), τρὶς (three times) ἐναυάγησα (I was shipwrecked), νυχθήμερον (a night and a day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βυθῷ (deep sea) πεποίηκα (I have passed); ²⁶ ὁδοιπορίαις (in journeyings) πολλάκις (often), κινδύνοις (in perils) ποταμῶν (of rivers), κινδύνοις (in perils) λῃστῶν (of robbers); κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐκ (from my own) γένους (race), κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐξ (from) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles); κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (in) πόλει (the city), κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (in) ἐρημίᾳ (the wilderness); κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (on) θαλάσσῃ (the sea), κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (among) ψευδαδέλφοις (false brothers); ²⁷ κόπῳ (in labor) καὶ (and) μόχθῳ (toil), ἐν (in) ἀγρυπνίαις (watchings) πολλάκις (often); ἐν (in) λιμῷ (hunger) καὶ (and) δίψει (thirst), ἐν (in) νηστείαις (fastings) πολλάκις (often); ἐν (in) ψύχει (cold) καὶ (and) γυμνότητι (nakedness). ²⁸ Χωρὶς (Besides) τῶν (the things) παρεκτὸς (external), ἡ (the) ἐπίστασίς (pressure) μοι (on me) ἡ (-) καθ’ (on every) ἡμέραν (day) ἡ (is my) μέριμνα (care) πασῶν (for all) τῶν (the) ἐκκλησιῶν (churches). ²⁹ τίς (Who) ἀσθενεῖ (is weak), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀσθενῶ (I am weak)? τίς (Who) σκανδαλίζεται (is led into sin), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) πυροῦμαι (do burn inwardly)? ³⁰ Εἰ (If) καυχᾶσθαι (to boast) δεῖ (it behooves me), τὰ (in the things) τῆς (of the) ἀσθενείας (weakness) μου (of me) καυχήσομαι (I will boast).

¹¹ Γέγονα (I have become) ἄφρων (a fool); ὑμεῖς (you) με (me) ἠναγκάσατε (compelled). ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ὤφειλον (ought) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you) συνίστασθαι (to have been commended). οὐδὲν (In no way) γὰρ (for) ὑστέρησα (was I inferior) τῶν (to those) “Ὑπερλίαν (most eminent) ἀποστόλων (apostles),” εἰ (though) καὶ (even) οὐδέν (nothing) εἰμι (I am).

⁸ ὁ (the One) γὰρ (for) ἐνεργήσας (having worked) Πέτρῳ (in Peter) εἰς (for) ἀποστολὴν (apostleship) τῆς (of the) περιτομῆς (circumcision) ἐνήργησεν (did) καὶ (also) ἐμοὶ (in me) εἰς (toward) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) —

⁷ ἵνα (in order that) ἐνδείξηται (He might show) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) αἰῶσιν (ages) τοῖς (that) ἐπερχομένοις (are coming) τὸ (the) ὑπερβάλλον (surpassing) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) χρηστότητι (kindness) ἐφ’ (toward) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ⁸ Τῇ (-) γὰρ (For) χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (yourselves); Θεοῦ (it is of God) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift),

⁷ οὗ (of which) ἐγενήθην (I became) διάκονος (servant) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῆς (-), δοθείσης (having been given) μοι (to me) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (working) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ⁸ Ἐμοὶ (To me), τῷ (the) ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ (very least) πάντων (of all) ἁγίων (saints), ἐδόθη (was given) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὕτη (this): τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach) τὸ (the) ἀνεξιχνίαστον (unsearchable) πλοῦτος (riches) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹³ Θεὸς (God) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ἐνεργῶν (working) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) καὶ (both) τὸ (-) θέλειν (to will) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἐνεργεῖν (to work) ὑπὲρ (according to) τῆς (His) εὐδοκίας (good pleasure).

¹³ πάντα (For all things) ἰσχύω (I have strength) ἐν (in) τῷ (the One) ἐνδυναμοῦντί (strengthening) με (me).

²⁸ ὃν (whom) ἡμεῖς (we) καταγγέλλομεν (preach), νουθετοῦντες (admonishing) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) καὶ (and) διδάσκοντες (teaching) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom), ἵνα (so that) παραστήσωμεν (we may present) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) τέλειον (perfect) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ). ²⁹ Εἰς (Unto) ὃ (this) καὶ (also) κοπιῶ (I toil), ἀγωνιζόμενος (striving) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (energy) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (-) ἐνεργουμένην (working) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power).

¹⁵ Πιστὸς (Trustworthy is) ὁ (the) λόγος (saying) καὶ (and) πάσης (of full) ἀποδοχῆς (acceptance) ἄξιος (worthy), ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἁμαρτωλοὺς (sinners) σῶσαι (to save), ὧν (of whom) πρῶτός (the foremost) εἰμι (am) ἐγώ (I). ¹⁶ ἀλλὰ (But) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), ἠλεήθην (I was shown mercy), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me), πρώτῳ (the foremost), ἐνδείξηται (might display) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) τὴν (-) ἅπασαν (perfect) μακροθυμίαν (patience), πρὸς (as) ὑποτύπωσιν (a pattern) τῶν (for those) μελλόντων (being about) πιστεύειν (to believe) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).
