²⁶ And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, behold, he immerses, and all are going to him.

⁷ and salutations in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

⁷ This man came as a witness, to testify of the Light, that all through him might believe.

⁹ He was the true Light, which, coming into the world, gives light to every man.

²⁶ John answered them, saying: I immerse in water; but there stands one among you whom you know not. ²⁷ He it is, who, though he comes after me, is now before me; the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose. ²⁸ These things were done in Beth any, beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing. ²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said: Behold the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is now before me, for he existed before me. ³¹ And I knew him not; but that he might be made manifest to Israel, for this reason I have come immersing in water. ³² And John testified, saying: I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to immerse in water, said to me, On whom you shall see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is he that immerses in the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I saw, and do testify that this is the Son of God. ³⁵ Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. ³⁶ And looking on Jesus as he walked, he said: Be hold the Lamb of God.

² This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou hast come as a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou doest, unless God be with him.

⁴⁸ If we thus let him alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.

¹⁹ Then the Pharisees said among themselves: You see that you gain nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him.

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strifes, jealousies, anger, party-spirit, divisions, sects, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; with respect to which, I tell you now, as I also told you in times past, that those who practice such things shall riot inherit the kingdom of God.

¹² As many as wish to make a fair show in the flesh, these compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution for the cross of the Christ. ¹³ For not even do those very men, who are circumcised, keep the law: but they wish you to be circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom comes not from above, but is earthly, animal, demoniac. ¹⁶ For where envy and strife are, there is commotion, and every evil work. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. ¹⁸ And those who cultivate peace, sow for themselves a harvest of righteousness in peace.

⁵ Do you suppose that the scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the Spirit that dwells in us incline to envy? No. ⁶ But he gives more grace. "Wherefore he says: God sets himself against the proud, but gives grace to the lowly.
