⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

²¹ Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor's wife; neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is thy neighbor's.

²¹ when I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

² And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

¹ And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. ² And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house; and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it: or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money. ³ And Naboth said to Ahab, Jehovah forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee. ⁴ And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

⁷ The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul:
The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple. ⁸ The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart:
The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes. ⁹ The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever:
The ordinances of Jehovah are true, [and] righteous altogether. ¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb. ¹¹ Moreover by them is thy servant warned:
In keeping them there is great reward. ¹² Who can discern [his] errors?
Clear thou me from hidden [faults].

⁹⁶ I have seen an end of all perfection;
[But] thy commandment is exceeding broad.

² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

²⁸ but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

³³ I coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.)

²⁰ because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law [cometh] the knowledge of sin.

¹ What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, hath found according to the flesh?

¹⁵ for the law worketh wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.

¹⁵ What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

⁸ but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin [is] dead.

¹¹ for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.

¹³ Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good;—that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.

⁹ For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin; and the power of sin is the law:

³ But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints;

⁵ Put to death therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry;

⁵ not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God;

¹⁵ Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vainglory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
