¹⁶ He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain],
[And] he that giveth to the rich, [shall come] only to want.

¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor;
He hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up.
²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him,
He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth. ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not;
Therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits:
The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly,
[God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,
And will rain it upon him while he is eating. ²⁴ He shall flee from the iron weapon,
And the bow of brass shall strike him through. ²⁵ He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body;
Yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall:
Terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures:
A fire not blown [by man] shall devour him;
It shall consume that which is left in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity,
And the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart;
[His goods] shall flow away in the day of his wrath. ²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the heritage appointed unto him by God.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,
Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;
I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

³¹ He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker;
But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor;
Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: ²³ For Jehovah will plead their cause,
And despoil of life those that despoil them.

³ A needy man that oppresseth the poor
Is [like] a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.

²² He that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches,
And knoweth not that want shall come upon him.

² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage. ³ Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks, neither shall ye walk haughtily; for it is an evil time.

⁹ Thus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother; ¹⁰ and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart. ¹¹ But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which Jehovah of hosts had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets: therefore there came great wrath from Jehovah of hosts. ¹³ And it is come to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear, so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts; ¹⁴ but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

³³ And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do [them] good, and lend, never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.

¹² And he said to him also that had bidden him, { When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor rich neighbors; lest haply they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee. ¹³ But when thou makest a feast, bid the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: ¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed; because they have not [wherewith] to recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed in the resurrection of the just.}

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.

¹³ For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted; and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.
