¹ Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was [there], prophets and teachers, Barnabas, and Symeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

¹ At that season Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus, ² and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore do these powers work in him. ³ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. ⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. ⁵ And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod. ⁷ Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she should ask. ⁸ And she, being put forward by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist. ⁹ And the king was grieved; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat with him, he commanded it to be given; ¹⁰ and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.

¹ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cζsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judζa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Iturζa and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

¹⁹ but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, ²⁰ added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

³¹ In that very hour there came certain Pharisees, saying to him, Get thee out, and go hence: for Herod would fain kill thee. ³² And he said unto them, { Go and say to that fox, Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third [day] I am perfected.

⁷ And when he knew that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him unto Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem in these days.
⁸ Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was of a long time desirous to see him, because he had heard concerning him; and he hoped to see some miracle done by him. ⁹ And he questioned him in many words; but he answered him nothing. ¹⁰ And the chief priests and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing him. ¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers set him at nought, and mocked him, and arraying him in gorgeous apparel sent him back to Pilate.

³⁶ And Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, Son of exhortation), a Levite, a man of Cyprus by race,

¹ And Saul was consenting unto his death. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judζa and Samaria, except the apostles. ² And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him. ³ But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.

¹ But Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

¹⁹ They therefore that were scattered abroad upon the tribulation that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none save only to Jews. ²⁰ But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.

²² And the report concerning them came to the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas as far as Antioch: ²³ who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad; and he exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord: ²⁴ for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. ²⁵ And he went forth to Tarsus to seek for Saul; ²⁶ and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people, and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
²⁷ Now in these days there came down prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

³⁰ which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

²⁵ And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministration, taking with them John whose surname was Mark.

⁹ But Saul, who is also [called] Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him,

²⁶ and thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been committed to the grace of God for the work which they had fulfilled. ²⁷ And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all things that God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith unto the Gentiles.

³² And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

³⁵ But Paul and Barnabas tarried in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

⁶ And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

⁹ Now this man had four virgin daughters, who prophesied.

⁶ And having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, whether prophecy, [let us prophesy] according to the proportion of our faith; ⁷ or ministry, [let us give ourselves] to our ministry; or he that teacheth, to his teaching;

²¹ Timothy my fellow-worker saluteth you; and Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen.

⁶ Or I only and Barnabas, have we not a right to forbear working?

²⁸ And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, [divers] kinds of tongues. ²⁹ Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all [workers of] miracles?

²⁴ But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all; ²⁵ the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

⁹ and when they perceived the grace that was given unto me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the Gentiles, and they unto the circumcision;

¹³ And the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that even Barnabas was carried away with their dissimulation.

¹¹ And he gave some [to be] apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

²² All the saints salute you, especially they that are of Cζsar's household.

²⁰ despise not prophesyings;
