⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me, that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

¹⁴ I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight, and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. And he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough, now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.

²⁰ Why is light given to him who is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul, ²¹ who long for death, but it comes not, and dig for it more than for hid treasures, ²² who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad when they can find the grave?

¹⁵ so that my soul chooses strangling and death rather than these my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe my life. I would not live always. Let me alone, for my days are vanity.

¹³ O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou would appoint for me a set time, and remember me!

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends, for the hand of God has touched me.

⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me. My moisture was changed as with the drought of summer. Selah.

¹⁰ Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver. I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. ¹¹ For my own sake, for my own sake, I will do it. For how should my name be profaned? And I will not give my glory to another. ¹² Hearken to me, O Jacob, and Israel my called: I am he. I am the first. ³ Therefore now, O LORD, I beseech thee, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁶ And in those days men will seek death, and will, no, not find it. And they will long to die, and death will flee from them.
