²⁸ And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is not he the son of Jerubbaal, and Zebul his officer? Serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, Thou son of a perverse rebellious woman, do I not know that thou have chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and to the shame of thy mother's nakedness?

² And every man who was in distress, and every man who was in debt, and every man who was discontented, gathered themselves to him, and he became captain over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.

⁷ And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites. Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, ⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none who discloses to me when my son makes a league with the son of Jesse? And there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day.

¹ And there happened to be there a base fellow whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, O Israel.

¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel. Now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness. They have more than heart could wish. ⁸ They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression. They speak loftily.

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

¹⁰ Say thou not, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? For thou do not inquire wisely concerning this.

⁵ The fool shall no more be called noble, nor the churl said to be bountiful.

⁷ And the instruments of the churl are evil. He devises wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks right.
