⁴¹ And he said to them: How say they that the Christ is son of David?

¹ BOOK of the generation of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

⁴¹ While the Pharisees were collected together, Jesus asked them, ⁴² saying: What think ye concerning the Christ? Of whom is he the son? They say to him: Of David. ⁴³ He says to them: How then does David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying: ⁴⁴ The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies under thy feet. ⁴⁵ If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?

³⁵ And Jesus answering said, while teaching in the temple: How say the scribes that the Christ is son of David? ³⁶ For David himself said, in the Holy Spirit: The LORD said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, Till I put thy enemies under thy feet. ³⁷ David himself calls him Lord; and whence is he his son? And the great multitude heard him gladly.

³⁸ And he called aloud, saying: Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. ³⁹ And they who went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace. But he cried much the more: Son of David, have mercy on me.

⁴² Did not the Scripture say, that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

³⁰ Being a prophet, therefore, and knowing that God swore to him, with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins one should sit on his throne,

³ concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, ⁴ who was declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord;

¹⁶ I, Jesus, sent my angel, to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star.
