the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:
»Tell the Israelites: ‘Here are the kinds of land animals you may eat:
"'You may eat all animals that have completely divided hoofs and that also chew their cud.
“'Nevertheless these you shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those who part the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, is unclean to you.
The coney, because he chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you.
The hare, because it chews the cud but doesn’t have a parted hoof, is unclean to you.
and the swine, though it hath a parted hoof, yet because it doth not chew the cud, it is unclean to you.
You shall not eat their meat. You shall not touch their carcasses. They are unclean to you.
"'Here are the kinds of creatures that live in the water that you may eat. You may eat anything in the seas and streams that have fins and scales.
And all that have not fins and scales in the seas and rivers of all that move and live in the waters, shall ye abhor.
and you are to detest them. You shall not eat of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses.
- whatever in the waters has neither fins nor scales is an abomination to you:
“‘You shall detest these among the birds; they shall not be eaten because they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,
the red kite, any kind of black kite,
any kind of raven,
the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
"'All flying insects that walk on all fours are an abomination to you.
Yet you may eat these: of all winged creeping things that go on all fours, which have long, jointed legs for hopping on the earth.
»‘You may eat any kind of locust, cricket, katydid, or grasshopper.
But any other winged insect that has four legs is detestable to you.
And for these ye shall be unclean: whoever touches their carcase shall be unclean until the evening.
And whoever carrieth any of their carcases shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until evening.
“'Every animal which has a split hoof that isn't completely divided, or doesn't chew the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean.
And of all the animals that go on all four, any that walk upon their paws are unclean unto you; whoever touches their carcase shall be unclean until the evening.
He who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. They are unclean to you.
And of the reptiles which are on the earth, these are unclean to you; the weasel, and the mouse, and the lizzard,
the gecko, and the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
All these are unclean to you: anyone touching them when they are dead will be unclean till evening.
And on whatsoever one of their dead bodies shall fall it shall be unclean; whatever wooden vessel, or garment, or skin, or sack it may be, every vessel in which work should be done, shall be dipped in water, and shall be unclean till evening; and then it shall be clean.
And any clay vessel into which it falls shall become unclean, and you must break it.
"'If water from that pottery touches any food, the food is unclean. Any liquid that you drink from that pottery is unclean.
And anything on which one of their dead bodies falls shall become unclean: an oven or a stove must be broken—they are unclean and shall be unclean for you.
"'A spring or a cistern holding water will remain clean. But anyone who touches their dead bodies will be unclean.
"'If their dead bodies fall on seed that is to be planted, the seed is clean.
But if water is put on the seed, and part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.
"'When any animal that you are allowed to eat dies, whoever touches its dead body will be unclean until evening.
And he who eats of the carcass of it will wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. He also who bears the carcass of it will wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.
»‘Any creature that swarms on the ground is disgusting and must not be eaten.
Whatsoever goeth upon the breast on four feet, or hath many feet, or traileth on the earth, you shall not eat, because it is abominable.
You must not defile yourselves with any swarmer that swarms, and you must not make yourselves unclean by them and so be made unclean by them,
For I am the LORD, your God, and ye were consecrated and ye were holy, for I am holy: and ye shall not make your souls unclean by any creeping thing creeping upon the earth.
"'I am the LORD! I brought you out of Egypt to be your God. Be holy because I am holy.
"'This is the law about animals, birds, and every living creature that swims in the water and every creature that swarms on the ground.
To distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.
