He said, “I will go in to my wife's room.” But her father wouldn't allow him to go in. ² He told Samson: "I thought that you hated her, so I gave her to your friend. Her younger sister is prettier. You can have her, instead." ³ Samson said to them, “This time I will be blameless in the case of the Philistines when I harm them.” ⁴ And he went and caught three hundred foxes, and coupled them tail to tail, and fastened torches between the tails: ⁵ He set fire to the torches and let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and he burned both the stacks of sheaves and the standing grain, up to the vineyards of olive groves. ⁶ Then the Philistines said, Who has done this? They said, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because his his wife was given her to his companion. The Philistines came up and burnt her and her father with fire. ⁷ Samson said to them, If you behave like this, surely I will be avenged on you. ⁸ He attacked them viciously and slaughtered many of them, then he went and lived in the cave in the rock of Etam. ⁹ Then the Philistines went up, and camped in Judah, and spread out in Lehi. ¹⁰ The men of Judah said, Why have you come up against us? They said, We have come up to take Samson prisoner, to do to him as he has done to us. ¹¹ These three thousand men of Judah went to the cave in the cliff at Etam and said to Samson: "Do you know that the Philistines are our rulers? What did you do?" He answered: "I did to them just what they did to me." ¹² They said to him, We have come down to tie you up so that we can deliver you into the hand of the Philistines. Samson said to them, Swear to me that you will not kill me yourselves. ¹³ They said: "We are only going to tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you." So they tied him up with two new ropes and brought him back from the cliff. ¹⁴ When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him, and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily on him. The ropes that were on his arms became as charred flax, and his ropes dropped off his hands. ¹⁵ He found a fresh jawbone of an ass and struck down a thousand men with it. ¹⁶ And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of an ass I have killed a thousand men. ¹⁷ When he had finished speaking he threw away the jawbone, and that place was called Ramath Lehi. ¹⁸ And he was very thirsty, and called on the LORD, and said, Thou hast given by the hand of thy servant this great deliverance, and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? ¹⁹ But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out of it. When he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived. Therefore its name was called En Hakkore, which is in Lehi, to this day. ²⁰ He judged Israel twenty years in the days of the Philistines.
