Amos 5

VIN(i) 1 Hear this word, O ye house of Israel. And why? I must make this moan for you: 2 Fallen is Israel the virgin never to rise again! She is abandoned on her own land, with no one to raise her up. 3 "For this is what the Lord GOD says: 'The city that is sending out a thousand will have a hundred left; The city that is sending out a hundred will have ten left of the house of Israel.'" 4 "For this is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: 'Seek me and live, 5 "Do not seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal. Do not pass to Beersheba. For Gilgal will surely go into captivity (exile), and Bethel will come to nothing. 6 Seek ye the LORD and live, lest he shall break through the house of Joseph as fire, and devour, and none quenching to the house of God. 7 Ah, you who turn justice into wormwood and hurl righteousness to the ground! 8 The one who made the Pleiades and Orion and who turns deep darkness into the morning and darkens day into night, the one who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, the LORD is his name! 9 He raiseth destruction upon the mighty people, and bringeth down the stronghold. 10 You hate the one who reproves in the gate, and abhor him who speaks the truth (with integrity). 11 Forasmuch therefore as you trample on the poor, and take taxes of wheat from him- therefore you who have built houses of cut stone will not dwell in them. You who have planted pleasant vineyards shall not drink their wine. 12 For I know how many are your offences, and how great are your sins-- you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the courts. 13 therefore the prudent person remains silent at such a time, for the time is evil. 14 Seek good and not evil that you may live, and so the Lord God Almighty will be with you. As you have said, 15 Hate evil and love good and establish justice in the gate; perhaps the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. 16 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of the Heavenly Armies, the Lord, says: "There will be dirges in all of the streets; and in all of the highways they will cry out in anguish. They will call the farmer to mourning and those who lament to grieve. 17 And there shall be wailing in all vineyards; for I will pass through you, says the LORD. 18 "Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD. Why do you long for the day of the LORD? It is darkness, and not light. 19 It will be as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him; or he went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall and a snake bit him. 20 Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness, and not light pitch black at that, without a ray of sunshine?" 21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I can’t stand your solemn assemblies. 22 Yes, even if you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them, and I will not look at the fellowship offerings of your fattened animals. 23 Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. 25 Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings those forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? 26 Or have you borne the booth of your king and the pedestal of your images--the star of your elohim which you made for yourselves? 27 Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.
