1 Kings

VIN(i) 1 Now King David was old and advanced in years. They put covers over him but he could not get warm. 2 His servants said to him: "Your Majesty let us find a young woman to stay with you and take care of you. She will lie close to you and keep you warm." 3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4 Now she was very beautiful; and she took care of the king, waiting on him at all times; but the king had no connection with her. 5 But Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king." And he gat him a chariot and horsemen and fifty men to run before him. 6 His father had never scolded him at any time by saying, "Why have you done so?" And he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom. 7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed after Adonijah. 8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and David's mighty men, were not with Adonijah. 9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves at Zoheleth Rock near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's other sons, all the men of Judah, and the king's officials. 10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet, or Benaiah, or the mighty men, or his brother Solomon. 11 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, "Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, but our lord David does not know? 12 So then, come, let me advise you please, that you may save your life and the life of your son, Solomon. 13 Come, go to King David and say to him, 'Have you not, my lord the king, sworn to your servant, "Surely Solomon your son shall become king after me. And he will sit on my throne"? But why is Adonijah king?' 14 Then, while you are still talking to the king, I'll come in after you and verify your statement." 15 Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king. 16 Bathsheba bowed low before the king. He asked: »What do you want?« 17 She said to him, “My lord, you swore by Yahweh your God to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’ 18 But now, look! Adonijah has become king! And now, my lord the king, you do not know! 19 He has sacrificed myriads of oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep, and he has invited all of the kings sons, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited your servant Solomon. 20 You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise, as soon as your majesty is laid to rest with his ancestors, I and my son Solomon will be branded as traitors." 22 While she was still talking to the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. 23 And they told the king, saying, Behold, Nathan the prophet. And he came in before the king, and bowed before the king with his face to the ground. 24 Nathan said, "My lord the king, have you said, 'Adonijah shall be king after me and he shall sit on my throne'? 25 For he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king's sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Look, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, 'Long live king Adonijah.' 26 But me, me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon, he has not invited. 27 Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewn to thy servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him? 28 Then king David answered, "Summon Bathsheba to me." So she came into the king's presence, and stood before him. 29 Then the king swore and said, "As the LORD lives, who has saved my life from all trouble, 30 surely as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, Surely Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place, even so I will do today. 31 Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and knelt before to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live forever. 32 King David said, Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. They came before the king. 33 and David addressed them. "Take your lord's servants, have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and take him down to Gihon. 34 And have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, 'Long live king Solomon.' 35 Then you shall go up after him, and let him come and sit on my throne; he shall be king in my place. I have appointed him to be leader over Israel and Judah." 36 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, "Amen. May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so. 37 As the LORD was with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David." 38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live king Solomon!” 40 And all the people came up after him piping with pipes and rejoicing greatly, so that the earth rang with the sound of them. 41 And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard [it] as they were finishing their repast; and Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, and he said, Wherefore this noise of the city in an uproar? 42 While he yet spoke, look, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said, "Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news." 43 "No," Jonathan answered. "Our lord King David has installed Solomon as king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king's mule. 45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city resounds with it. This is the noise that you have heard. 46 »Solomon is seated on the royal throne. 47 "Even the royal officials have come to congratulate His Majesty King David, saying: May your God make Solomon's name more famous than yours and his reign greater than your reign. The king himself bowed down on his bed 48 And he said: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who hath given this day one to sit on my throne, my eyes seeing it. 49 Terrified, all of Adonijah's guests jumped up and ran away. 50 And Adonias fearing Solomon, arose and went, and took hold of the horn of the altar. 51 Solomon was told, "Look, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, and he has grasped the horns of the altar, saying, 'Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will surely not kill his servant with the sword!'" 52 Solomon said, "If he is a son of noble character, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, but if evil is found in him, then he will die." 53 So king Solomon sent and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed-down to king Solomon. And Solomon said to him, Go to your house.
