Nehemiah 2:4-20 ויאמר said לי המלך Then the king על unto me, For מה what זה what אתה dost thou מבקשׁ make request? ואתפלל So I prayed אל to אלהי the God השׁמים׃ of heaven.

5 H559 ואמר And I said H4428 למלך unto the king, H518 אם If H5921 על it please H4428 המלך the king, H2895 טוב it please H518 ואם and if H3190 ייטב have found favor H5650 עבדך thy servant H6440 לפניך in thy sight, H834 אשׁר that H7971 תשׁלחני thou wouldest send H413 אל me unto H3063 יהודה Judah, H413 אל unto H5892 עיר the city H6913 קברות sepulchers, H1 אבתי of my fathers' H1129 ואבננה׃ that I may build

6 H559 ויאמר said H4428 לי המלך And the king H7694 והשׁגל unto me, (the queen H3427 יושׁבת also sitting H681 אצלו by H5704 עד him,) For H4970 מתי how long H1961 יהיה be? H4109 מהלכך shall thy journey H4970 ומתי and when H7725 תשׁוב wilt thou return? H3190 וייטב H6440 לפני H4428 המלך the king H7971 וישׁלחני to send H5414 ואתנה me; and I set H2165 לו זמן׃ him a time.

7 H559 ואומר Moreover I said H4428 למלך unto the king, H518 אם If H5921 על it please H4428 המלך the king, H2895 טוב it please H107 אגרות let letters H5414 יתנו be given H5921 לי על me to H6346 פחוות the governors H5676 עבר beyond H5104 הנהר the river, H834 אשׁר that H5674 יעבירוני they may convey me over H5704 עד till H834 אשׁר till H935 אבוא I come H413 אל into H3063 יהודה׃ Judah;

8 H107 ואגרת And a letter H413 אל unto H623 אסף Asaph H8104 שׁמר the keeper H6508 הפרדס forest, H834 אשׁר that H4428 למלך of the king's H834 אשׁר which H5414 יתן he may give H6086 לי עצים me timber H7136 לקרות to make beams H853 את H8179 שׁערי for the gates H1002 הבירה of the palace H834 אשׁר that H1004 לבית to the house, H2346 ולחומת and for the wall H5892 העיר of the city, H1004 ולבית and for the house H834 אשׁר H935 אבוא I shall enter H413 אליו into. H5414 ויתן granted H4428 לי המלך And the king H3027 כיד hand H430 אלהי of my God H2896 הטובה me, according to the good H5921 עלי׃ upon

9 H935 ואבוא Then I came H413 אל to H6346 פחוות the governors H5676 עבר beyond H5104 הנהר the river, H5414 ואתנה and gave H853 להם את H107 אגרות letters. H4428 המלך them the king's H7971 וישׁלח had sent H5973 עמי with H4428 המלך Now the king H8269 שׂרי captains H2428 חיל of the army H6571 ופרשׁים׃ and horsemen

10 H8085 וישׁמע heard H5571 סנבלט When Sanballat H2772 החרני the Horonite, H2900 וטוביה and Tobiah H5650 העבד the servant, H5984 העמני the Ammonite, H7489 וירע it grieved H1992 להם H7451 רעה them exceedingly H1419 גדלה them exceedingly H834 אשׁר that H935 בא there was come H120 אדם a man H1245 לבקשׁ to seek H2896 טובה the welfare H1121 לבני of the children H3478 ישׂראל׃ of Israel.

11 H935 ואבוא So I came H413 אל to H3389 ירושׁלם Jerusalem, H1961 ואהי and was H8033 שׁם there H3117 ימים days. H7969 שׁלשׁה׃ three

12 H6965 ואקום And I arose H3915 לילה in the night, H589 אני I H376 ואנשׁים men H4592 מעט and some few H5973 עמי with H3808 ולא me; neither H5046 הגדתי told H120 לאדם I man H4100 מה what H430 אלהי my God H5414 נתן had put H413 אל in H3820 לבי my heart H6213 לעשׂות to do H3389 לירושׁלם at Jerusalem: H929 ובהמה beast H369 אין neither H5973 עמי with H3588 כי me, save H518 אם me, save H929 הבהמה the beast H834 אשׁר that H589 אני I H7392 רכב׃ rode

13 H3318 ואצאה And I went out H8179 בשׁער by the gate H1516 הגיא of the valley, H3915 לילה by night H413 ואל even before H6440 פני even before H5869 עין well, H8577 התנין the dragon H413 ואל and to H8179 שׁער port, H830 האשׁפת the dung H1961 ואהי and viewed H7663 שׂבר and viewed H2346 בחומת the walls H3389 ירושׁלם of Jerusalem, H834 אשׁר which H6555 המפרוצים were broken down, H8179 ושׁעריה and the gates H398 אכלו thereof were consumed H784 באשׁ׃ with fire.

14 H5674 ואעבר Then I went on H413 אל to H8179 שׁער the gate H5869 העין of the fountain, H413 ואל and to H1295 ברכת pool: H4428 המלך the king's H369 ואין but no H4725 מקום place H929 לבהמה for the beast H5674 לעבר me to pass. H8478 תחתי׃ under

15 H1961 ואהי and viewed H5927 עלה H5158 בנחל by the brook, H3915 לילה in the night H1961 ואהי H7663 שׂבר and viewed H2346 בחומה the wall, H7725 ואשׁוב and turned back, H935 ואבוא and entered H8179 בשׁער by the gate H1516 הגיא of the valley, H7725 ואשׁוב׃ and returned.

16 H5461 והסגנים And the rulers H3808 לא not H3045 ידעו knew H575 אנה whither H1980 הלכתי I went, H4100 ומה or what H589 אני I H6213 עשׂה did; H3064 וליהודים to the Jews, H3548 ולכהנים nor to the priests, H2715 ולחרים nor to the nobles, H5461 ולסגנים nor to the rulers, H3499 וליתר nor to the rest H6213 עשׂה that did H4399 המלאכה the work. H5704 עד had I as H3651 כן yet H3808 לא neither H5046 הגדתי׃ told

17 H559 ואומר Then said H413 אלהם I unto H859 אתם them, Ye H7200 ראים see H7451 הרעה the distress H834 אשׁר that H587 אנחנו we H834 בה אשׁר in, how H3389 ירושׁלם Jerusalem H2717 חרבה H8179 ושׁעריה and the gates H3341 נצתו thereof are burned H784 באשׁ with fire: H1980 לכו come, H1129 ונבנה and let us build up H853 את H2346 חומת the wall H3389 ירושׁלם of Jerusalem, H3808 ולא no H1961 נהיה that we be H5750 עוד more H2781 חרפה׃ a reproach.

18 H5046 ואגיד Then I told H853 להם את H3027 יד them of the hand H430 אלהי of my God H834 אשׁר which H1931 היא which H2896 טובה was good H5921 עלי upon H637 ואף me; as also H1697 דברי words H4428 המלך the king's H834 אשׁר that H559 אמר he had spoken H559 לי ויאמרו unto me. And they said, H6965 נקום Let us rise up H1129 ובנינו and build. H2388 ויחזקו So they strengthened H3027 ידיהם their hands H2896 לטובה׃ for good

19 H8085 וישׁמע heard H5571 סנבלט But when Sanballat H2772 החרני the Horonite, H2900 וטביה and Tobiah H5650 העבד the servant, H5984 העמוני the Ammonite, H1654 וגשׁם and Geshem H6163 הערבי the Arabian, H3932 וילעגו they laughed us to scorn, H959 לנו ויבזו and despised H5921 עלינו and despised H559 ויאמרו us, and said, H4100 מה What H1697 הדבר thing H2088 הזה this H834 אשׁר that H859 אתם ye H6213 עשׂים do? H5921 העל against H4428 המלך the king? H859 אתם will ye H4775 מרדים׃ rebel

20 H7725 ואשׁיב H853 אותם H1697 דבר H559 ואומר I them, and said H430 להם אלהי unto them, The God H8064 השׁמים of heaven, H1931 הוא he H6743 יצליח will prosper H587 לנו ואנחנו us; therefore we H5650 עבדיו his servants H6965 נקום will arise H1129 ובנינו and build: H369 ולכם אין but ye have no H2506 חלק portion, H6666 וצדקה nor right, H2146 וזכרון nor memorial, H3389 בירושׁלם׃ in Jerusalem.
