Genesis 38 ויהי And it came to pass בעת time, ההוא at that וירד went down יהודה that Judah מאת אחיו his brethren, ויט and turned in עד to אישׁ a certain עדלמי Adullamite, ושׁמו whose name חירה׃ Hirah.

2 H7200 וירא saw H8033 שׁם there H3063 יהודה And Judah H1323 בת a daughter H376 אישׁ of a certain H3669 כנעני Canaanite, H8034 ושׁמו whose name H7770 שׁוע Shuah; H3947 ויקחה and he took H935 ויבא her, and went in H413 אליה׃ unto

3 H2029 ותהר And she conceived, H3205 ותלד and bore H1121 בן a son; H7121 ויקרא and he called H853 את H8034 שׁמו his name H6147 ער׃ Er.

4 H2029 ותהר And she conceived H5750 עוד again, H3205 ותלד and bore H1121 בן a son; H7121 ותקרא and she called H853 את H8034 שׁמו his name H209 אונן׃ Onan.

5 H3254 ותסף conceived, H5750 עוד And she yet again H3205 ותלד and bore H1121 בן a son; H7121 ותקרא and called H853 את H8034 שׁמו his name H7956 שׁלה Shelah: H1961 והיה and he was H3580 בכזיב at Chezib, H3205 בלדתה when she bore H853 אתו׃

6 H3947 ויקח took H3063 יהודה And Judah H802 אשׁה a wife H6147 לער for Er H1060 בכורו his firstborn, H8034 ושׁמה whose name H8559 תמר׃ Tamar.

7 H1961 ויהי was H6147 ער And Er, H1060 בכור firstborn, H3063 יהודה Judah's H7451 רע wicked H5869 בעיני in the sight H3068 יהוה of the LORD; H4191 וימתהו slew H3068 יהוה׃ and the LORD

8 H559 ויאמר said H3063 יהודה And Judah H209 לאונן unto Onan, H935 בא Go in H413 אל unto H802 אשׁת wife, H251 אחיך thy brother's H2992 ויבם and marry H853 אתה H6965 והקם her, and raise up H2233 זרע seed H251 לאחיך׃ to thy brother.

9 H3045 וידע knew H209 אונן And Onan H3588 כי that H3808 לא should not H1961 לו יהיה be H2233 הזרע the seed H1961 והיה his; and it came to pass, H518 אם when H935 בא he went in H413 אל unto H802 אשׁת wife, H251 אחיו his brother's H7843 ושׁחת that he spilled H776 ארצה on the ground, H1115 לבלתי lest H5414 נתן that he should give H2233 זרע seed H251 לאחיו׃ to his brother.

10 H7489 וירע displeased H5869 בעיני displeased H3068 יהוה the LORD: H834 אשׁר And the thing which H6213 עשׂה he did H4191 וימת wherefore he slew H1571 גם him also. H853 אתו׃

11 H559 ויאמר Then said H3063 יהודה Judah H8559 לתמר to Tamar H3618 כלתו his daughter-in-law, H3427 שׁבי Remain H490 אלמנה a widow H1004 בית house, H1 אביך at thy father's H5704 עד till H1431 יגדל be grown: H7956 שׁלה Shelah H1121 בני my son H3588 כי for H559 אמר he said, H6435 פן Lest peradventure H4191 ימות die H1571 גם also, H1931 הוא he H251 כאחיו as his brethren H1980 ותלך went H8559 תמר And Tamar H3427 ותשׁב and dwelt H1004 בית house. H1 אביה׃ in her father's

12 H7235 וירבו H3117 הימים H4191 ותמת died; H1323 בת the daughter H7770 שׁוע of Shuah H802 אשׁת wife H3063 יהודה Judah's H5162 וינחם was comforted, H3063 יהודה and Judah H5927 ויעל and went up H5921 על unto H1494 גזזי his sheepshearers H6629 צאנו his sheepshearers H1931 הוא he H2437 וחירה Hirah H7453 רעהו and his friend H5726 העדלמי the Adullamite. H8553 תמנתה׃ to Timnath,

13 H5046 ויגד And it was told H8559 לתמר Tamar, H559 לאמר saying, H2009 הנה Behold H2524 חמיך thy father-in-law H5927 עלה goeth up H8553 תמנתה to Timnath H1494 לגז to shear H6629 צאנו׃ his sheep.

14 H5493 ותסר And she put H899 בגדי garments H491 אלמנותה her widow's H5921 מעליה off from H3680 ותכס her, and covered H6809 בצעיף her with a veil, H5968 ותתעלף and wrapped herself, H3427 ותשׁב and sat H6607 בפתח place, H5869 עינים H834 אשׁר which H5921 על by H1870 דרך the way H8553 תמנתה to Timnath; H3588 כי for H7200 ראתה she saw H3588 כי that H1431 גדל was grown, H7956 שׁלה Shelah H1931 והוא and she H3808 לא was not H5414 נתנה given H802 לו לאשׁה׃ unto him to wife.

15 H7200 ויראה saw H3063 יהודה When Judah H2803 ויחשׁבה her, he thought H2181 לזונה her a harlot; H3588 כי because H3680 כסתה she had covered H6440 פניה׃ her face.

16 H5186 ויט And he turned H413 אליה unto H413 אל her by H1870 הדרך the way, H559 ויאמר and said, H3051 הבה Go to, H4994 נא I pray thee, H935 אבוא let me come in H413 אליך unto H3588 כי thee; (for H3808 לא not H3045 ידע he knew H3588 כי that H3618 כלתו his daughter-in-law.) H1931 הוא she H559 ותאמר And she said, H4100 מה What H5414 תתן wilt thou give H3588 לי כי me, that H935 תבוא thou mayest come in H413 אלי׃ unto

17 H559 ויאמר And he said, H595 אנכי I H7971 אשׁלח will send H1423 גדי a kid H5795 עזים a kid H4480 מן from H6629 הצאן the flock. H559 ותאמר And she said, H518 אם H5414 תתן Wilt thou give H6162 ערבון a pledge, H5704 עד till H7971 שׁלחך׃ thou send

18 H559 ויאמר And he said, H4100 מה What H6162 הערבון pledge H834 אשׁר that H5414 אתן shall I give H559 לך ותאמר thee? And she said, H2368 חתמך Thy signet, H6616 ופתילך and thy bracelets, H4294 ומטך and thy staff H834 אשׁר H3027 בידך in thine hand. H5414 ויתן And he gave H935 לה ויבא her, and came in H413 אליה unto H2029 ותהר׃ her, and she conceived

19 H6965 ותקם And she arose, H1980 ותלך and went away, H5493 ותסר and laid by H6809 צעיפה her veil H5921 מעליה from H3847 ותלבשׁ her, and put on H899 בגדי the garments H491 אלמנותה׃ of her widowhood.

20 H7971 וישׁלח sent H3063 יהודה And Judah H853 את H1423 גדי the kid H5795 העזים the kid H3027 ביד by the hand H7453 רעהו of his friend H5726 העדלמי the Adullamite, H3947 לקחת to receive H6162 הערבון pledge H3027 מיד hand: H802 האשׁה from the woman's H3808 ולא her not. H4672 מצאה׃ but he found

21 H7592 וישׁאל Then he asked H853 את H582 אנשׁי H4725 מקמה of that place, H559 לאמר saying, H346 איה Where H6948 הקדשׁה the harlot, H1931 הוא that H5879 בעינים openly H5921 על by H1870 הדרך the way side? H559 ויאמרו And they said, H3808 לא no H1961 היתה There was H2088 בזה in this H6948 קדשׁה׃ harlot

22 H7725 וישׁב And he returned H413 אל to H3063 יהודה Judah, H559 ויאמר and said, H3808 לא I cannot H4672 מצאתיה find H1571 וגם her; and also H376 אנשׁי the men H4725 המקום of the place H559 אמרו said, H3808 לא no H1961 היתה there was H2088 בזה in this H6948 קדשׁה׃ harlot

23 H559 ויאמר said, H3063 יהודה And Judah H3947 תקח Let her take H6435 לה פן to her, lest H1961 נהיה we be H937 לבוז shamed: H2009 הנה behold, H7971 שׁלחתי I sent H1423 הגדי kid, H2088 הזה this H859 ואתה and thou H3808 לא hast not H4672 מצאתה׃ found

24 H1961 ויהי And it came to pass H7969 כמשׁלשׁ about three H2320 חדשׁים months H5046 ויגד after, that it was told H3063 ליהודה Judah, H559 לאמר saying, H2181 זנתה hath played the harlot; H8559 תמר Tamar H3618 כלתך thy daughter-in-law H1571 וגם and also, H2009 הנה behold, H2030 הרה she with child H2183 לזנונים by whoredom. H559 ויאמר said, H3063 יהודה And Judah H3318 הוציאוה Bring her forth, H8313 ותשׂרף׃ and let her be burnt.

25 H1931 הוא When she H3318 מוצאת brought forth, H1931 והיא she H7971 שׁלחה sent H413 אל to H2524 חמיה her father-in-law, H559 לאמר saying, H582 לאישׁ H834 אשׁר whose H428 אלה these H595 לו אנכי I H2030 הרה with child: H559 ותאמר and she said, H5234 הכר Discern, H4994 נא I pray thee, H4310 למי whose H2858 החתמת the signet, H6616 והפתילים and bracelets, H4294 והמטה and staff. H428 האלה׃ these,

26 H5234 ויכר acknowledged H3063 יהודה And Judah H559 ויאמר and said, H6663 צדקה She hath been more righteous H4480 ממני than H3588 כי I; because H5921 על that H3651 כן that H3808 לא her not H5414 נתתיה I gave H7956 לשׁלה to Shelah H1121 בני my son. H3808 ולא no H3254 יסף her again H5750 עוד more. H3045 לדעתה׃ And he knew

27 H1961 ויהי And it came to pass H6256 בעת in the time H3205 לדתה of her travail, H2009 והנה that, behold, H8380 תאומים twins H990 בבטנה׃ in her womb.

28 H1961 ויהי And it came to pass, H3205 בלדתה when she travailed, H5414 ויתן that put out H3027 יד hand: H3947 ותקח took H3205 המילדת and the midwife H7194 ותקשׁר and bound H5921 על upon H3027 ידו his hand H8144 שׁני a scarlet thread, H559 לאמר saying, H2088 זה This H3318 יצא came out H7223 ראשׁנה׃ first.

29 H1961 ויהי And it came to pass, H7725 כמשׁיב as he drew back H3027 ידו his hand, H2009 והנה that, behold, H3318 יצא came out: H251 אחיו his brother H559 ותאמר and she said, H4100 מה How H6555 פרצת hast thou broken forth? H5921 עליך upon H6556 פרץ breach H7121 ויקרא was called H8034 שׁמו thee: therefore his name H6557 פרץ׃ Pharez.

30 H310 ואחר And afterward H3318 יצא came out H251 אחיו his brother, H834 אשׁר that H5921 על upon H3027 ידו his hand: H8144 השׁני had the scarlet thread H7121 ויקרא was called H8034 שׁמו and his name H2226 זרח׃ Zarah.
