BIB⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ Τότε (Then) προσέρχονται (come) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes), λέγοντες (saying), ² “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) παραβαίνουσιν (break) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders)? οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) νίπτονται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them) ὅταν (when) ἄρτον (bread) ἐσθίωσιν (they shall eat).” ³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) παραβαίνετε (break) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)? ⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” ⁶ οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)! ⁷ ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying), ⁸ ‘Ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) οὗτος (this), τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (it honors); Ἡ (the) δὲ (however) καρδία (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me); ⁹ Μάτην (in vain) δὲ (then) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching as) διδασκαλίας (doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀκούετε (Hear) καὶ (and) συνίετε (understand)! ¹¹ οὐ (Not) τὸ (what) εἰσερχόμενον (is entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (that) ἐκπορευόμενον (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), τοῦτο (this) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).” ¹² Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come near), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) λέγουσιν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οἶδας (Know You) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (saying), ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν (were offended)?” ¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Πᾶσα (Every) φυτεία (plant) ἣν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐφύτευσεν (has planted) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly), ἐκριζωθήσεται (it will be rooted up). ¹⁴ ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).” ¹⁵ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Φράσον (Explain) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) παραβολήν (parable) ‹ταύτην› (this).” ¹⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἀκμὴν (Still) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀσύνετοί (without understanding) ἐστε (are)? ¹⁷ οὐ (Not yet) νοεῖτε (understand you) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (everything) τὸ (-) εἰσπορευόμενον (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (stomach) χωρεῖ (goes), καὶ (and) εἰς (into) ἀφεδρῶνα (the sewer) ἐκβάλλεται (is cast out)? ¹⁸ τὰ (The things) δὲ (however) ἐκπορευόμενα (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχεται (come forth), κἀκεῖνα (and these) κοινοῖ (defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man). ¹⁹ ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχονται (come forth) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) πονηροί (evil), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), ψευδομαρτυρίαι (false testimonies), βλασφημίαι (slanders). ²⁰ ταῦτά (These) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the things) κοινοῦντα (defiling) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); τὸ (-) δὲ (but) ἀνίπτοις (with unwashed) χερσὶν (hands) φαγεῖν (to eat), οὐ (not) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).” ²¹ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone forth) ἐκεῖθεν (from there), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) μέρη (district) Τύρου (of Tyre) καὶ (and) Σιδῶνος (Sidon). ²² καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), γυνὴ (a woman) Χαναναία (Canaanite) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ὁρίων (region) ἐκείνων (same), ἐξελθοῦσα (having approached), ἔκραζεν (was crying out), λέγουσα (saying), “Ἐλέησόν (Have mercy on) με (me), Κύριε (Lord), υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David); ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) μου (of me) κακῶς (miserably) δαιμονίζεται (is possessed by a demon).” ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτῇ (her) λόγον (a word). καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come to him), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἠρώτουν (were imploring) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) αὐτήν (her), ὅτι (for) κράζει (she cries out) ὄπισθεν (after) ἡμῶν (us)!” ²⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀπεστάλην (I was sent), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἀπολωλότα (being lost) οἴκου (of the house) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).” ²⁵ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐλθοῦσα (having come), προσεκύνει (she was worshiping) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγουσα (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), βοήθει (help) μοι (me)!” ²⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (it is) καλὸν (right) λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children), καὶ (and) βαλεῖν (to cast it) τοῖς (to the) κυναρίοις (dogs).” ²⁷ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Ναί (Yes), κύριε (Lord); καὶ (even) γὰρ (however) τὰ (the) κυνάρια (dogs) ἐσθίει (eat) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) ψιχίων (crumbs) τῶν (-) πιπτόντων (falling) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) τῶν (of the) κυρίων (masters) αὐτῶν (of them).” ²⁸ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Ὦ (O) γύναι (woman), μεγάλη (great is) σου (of you) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith)! γενηθήτω (Be it) σοι (to you) ὡς (as) θέλεις (you desire).” καὶ (And) ἰάθη (was healed) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) αὐτῆς (of her) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ἐκείνης (that). ²⁹ Καὶ (And) μεταβὰς (having departed) ἐκεῖθεν (from there), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦλθεν (went) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (Sea) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee); καὶ (and) ἀναβὰς (having gone up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain), ἐκάθητο (He was sitting) ἐκεῖ (there). ³⁰ καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοὶ (great), ἔχοντες (having) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (them) χωλούς (lame), κυλλούς (crippled), τυφλούς (blind), κωφούς (mute), καὶ (and) ἑτέρους (others) πολλούς (many), καὶ (and) ἔρριψαν* (they placed) αὐτοὺς (them) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them); ³¹ ὥστε (so that) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) θαυμάσαι (marveled), βλέποντας (seeing) κωφοὺς (mute) λαλοῦντας (speaking), κυλλοὺς (crippled) ὑγιεῖς (restored), καὶ (and) χωλοὺς (lame) περιπατοῦντας (walking), καὶ (and) τυφλοὺς (blind) βλέποντας (seeing); καὶ (and) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified) τὸν (the) Θεὸν (God) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel). ³² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (said), “Σπλαγχνίζομαι (I am moved with compassion) ἐπὶ (toward) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤδη (already) ἡμέραι (days) τρεῖς (three) προσμένουσίν (they continue) μοι (with Me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (have) τί (that) φάγωσιν (they might eat); καὶ (and) ἀπολῦσαι (to send away) αὐτοὺς (them) νήστεις (hungry), οὐ (not) θέλω (I am willing), μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) ἐκλυθῶσιν (they faint) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way).” ³³ Καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples), “Πόθεν (From where) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐν (in) ἐρημίᾳ (a secluded place), ἄρτοι (loaves) τοσοῦτοι (so many) ὥστε (as) χορτάσαι (to satisfy) ὄχλον (a crowd) τοσοῦτον (so great).” ³⁴ Καὶ (And) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πόσους (How many) ἄρτους (loaves) ἔχετε (have you)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Ἑπτά (Seven), καὶ (and) ὀλίγα (a few) ἰχθύδια (small fish).” ³⁵ Καὶ (And) παραγγείλας (He having commanded) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowds) ἀναπεσεῖν (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground), ³⁶ ἔλαβεν (having taken) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἰχθύας (fish), καὶ (and) εὐχαριστήσας (having given thanks), ἔκλασεν (He broke them) καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (was giving) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples), οἱ (-) δὲ (and the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowd). ³⁷ Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied); καὶ (and) τὸ (that) περισσεῦον (being over and above) τῶν (of the) κλασμάτων (fragments), ἦραν (they took up) ἑπτὰ (seven) σπυρίδας (baskets) πλήρεις (full). ³⁸ οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐσθίοντες (eating) ἦσαν (were) τετρακισχίλιοι (four thousand) ἄνδρες (men), χωρὶς (besides) γυναικῶν (women) καὶ (and) παιδίων (children). ³⁹ Καὶ (And) ἀπολύσας (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐνέβη (He entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὅρια (region) Μαγαδάν (of Magadan). ¹⁶ ¹ Καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having approached), οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαῖοι (Sadducees), πειράζοντες (testing), ἐπηρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) σημεῖον (a sign) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to show) αὐτοῖς (them). ² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὀψίας (Evening) γενομένης (having come), λέγετε (you say), ‘Εὐδία (Fair weather); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ ³ καὶ (And) πρωΐ (in the morning), ‘Σήμερον (Today) χειμών (a storm); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) στυγνάζων (being overcast) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πρόσωπον (appearance) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) γινώσκετε (you know how) διακρίνειν (to discern), τὰ (-) δὲ (but) σημεῖα (the signs) τῶν (of the) καιρῶν (times), οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able)! ⁴ γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous), σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah).” καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀπῆλθεν (He went away). ⁵ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side), ἐπελάθοντο (they forgot) ἄρτους (bread) λαβεῖν (to take). ⁶ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὁρᾶτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσέχετε (beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαίων (Sadducees).” ⁷ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), “Ὅτι (Because) Ἄρτους (bread) οὐκ (not) ἐλάβομεν (we took).” ⁸ Γνοὺς (Having known this) δὲ (however), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Τί (Why) διαλογίζεσθε (reason you) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves), ὀλιγόπιστοι (O you of little faith), ὅτι (because) ἄρτους (bread) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (you took)? ⁹ οὔπω (Not yet) νοεῖτε (do you understand), οὐδὲ (nor) μνημονεύετε (remember) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) τῶν (for the) πεντακισχιλίων (five thousand), καὶ (and) πόσους (how many) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) ἐλάβετε (you gathered)? ¹⁰ οὐδὲ (Nor) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἄρτους (loaves) τῶν (for the) τετρακισχιλίων (four thousand), καὶ (and) πόσας (how many) σπυρίδας (baskets) ἐλάβετε (you gathered)? ¹¹ πῶς (How) οὐ (not) νοεῖτε (understand you) ὅτι (that), οὐ (not) περὶ (concerning) ἄρτων (bread) εἶπον (I spoke) ὑμῖν (to you), προσέχετε (to beware) δὲ (also) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαίων (Sadducees)?” ¹² Τότε (Then) συνῆκαν (they understood) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἶπεν (He said) προσέχειν (to beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven) τῶν (of) ἄρτων (bread), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) διδαχῆς (teaching) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαίων (Sadducees). ¹³ Ἐλθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) μέρη (district) Καισαρείας (of Caesarea) τῆς (-) Φιλίππου (Philippi), ἠρώτα (He was questioning) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), λέγων (saying), “Τίνα (Whom) λέγουσιν (do pronounce) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) εἶναι (to be) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (man)?” ¹⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Οἱ (Some) μὲν (indeed) Ἰωάννην (John) τὸν (the) Βαπτιστήν (Baptist); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) Ἠλίαν (Elijah); ἕτεροι (others) δὲ (now) Ἰερεμίαν (Jeremiah), ἢ (or) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).” ¹⁵ Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (but) τίνα (whom) με (Me) λέγετε (do you pronounce) εἶναι (to be)?” ¹⁶ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (the) ζῶντος (living).” ¹⁷ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μακάριος (Blessed) εἶ (are you), Σίμων (Simon) Βαριωνᾶ (Barjona)! ὅτι (For) σὰρξ (flesh) καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκάλυψέν (revealed it) σοι (to you), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). ¹⁸ κἀγὼ (I also) δέ (now) σοι (to you) λέγω (say) ὅτι (that) σὺ (you) εἶ (are) Πέτρος (Peter), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (the) πέτρᾳ (rock) οἰκοδομήσω (I will build) μου (My) τὴν (-) ἐκκλησίαν (church), καὶ (and) πύλαι (the gates) ᾅδου (of hades) οὐ (not) κατισχύσουσιν (will prevail against) αὐτῆς (it). ¹⁹ δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you) τὰς (the) κλεῖδας (keys) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) δήσῃς (you might bind) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (will be) δεδεμένον (bound) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) λύσῃς (you might loose) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (will be) λελυμένον (loosed) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).” ²⁰ Τότε (Then) διεστείλατο* (instructed He) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) ἵνα (that) μηδενὶ (to no one) εἴπωσιν (they should say) ὅτι (that) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ). ²¹ Ἀπὸ (From) τότε (that ἀπελθεῖν (to go away), καὶ (and) πολλὰ (many things) παθεῖν (to suffer) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders) καὶ (and) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματέων (scribes), καὶ (and) ἀποκτανθῆναι (to be killed), καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθῆναι (to be raised). ²² Καὶ (And) προσλαβόμενος (having taken aside) αὐτὸν (Him), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) ἤρξατο (began) ἐπιτιμᾶν (to rebuke) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγων (saying), “Ἵλεώς (Far be it) σοι (from You), Κύριε (Lord); οὐ (never), μὴ (not) ἔσται (will be) σοι (to You) τοῦτο (this).” ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) εἶπεν (He said) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ὕπαγε (Get) ὀπίσω (behind) μου (Me), Σατανᾶ (Satan)! σκάνδαλον (A stumbling block) εἶ (you are) ἐμοῦ (to Me). ὅτι (For) οὐ (not) φρονεῖς (your thoughts are of) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the) τῶν (things) ἀνθρώπων (of men).” ²⁴ Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) θέλει (desires) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me) ἐλθεῖν (to come), ἀπαρνησάσθω (let him deny) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καὶ (and) ἀράτω (take up) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθείτω (follow) μοι (Me). ²⁵ ὃς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (might desire) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) σῶσαι (to save), ἀπολέσει (will lose) αὐτήν (it); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ἀπολέσῃ (might lose) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me), εὑρήσει (will find) αὐτήν (it). ²⁶ τί (What) γὰρ (for) ὠφεληθήσεται (will it profit) ἄνθρωπος (a man), ἐὰν (if) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ὅλον (whole) κερδήσῃ (he gains), τὴν (-) δὲ (but) ψυχὴν (the soul) αὐτοῦ (of him) ζημιωθῇ (loses)? ἢ (Or) τί (what) δώσει (will give) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀντάλλαγμα (as an exchange for) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul) αὐτοῦ (of him)? ²⁷ μέλλει (Is about) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἀποδώσει (He will give) ἑκάστῳ (to each) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) πρᾶξιν (deeds) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁸ Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (-), εἰσίν (there are) τινες (some) τῶν (of those) ὧδε (here) ἑστώτων (standing) οἵτινες (who) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) γεύσωνται (shall taste) θανάτου (of death) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἴδωσιν (they have seen) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him).” ¹⁷ ¹ Καὶ (And) μεθ’ (after) ἡμέρας (days) ἓξ (six), παραλαμβάνει (takes with Him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβον (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννην (John), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἀναφέρει (brings up) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) ὄρος (a mountain) ὑψηλὸν (high) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (themselves). ² καὶ (And) μετεμορφώθη (He was transfigured) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) ἔλαμψεν (shone) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡς (like) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun), τὰ (-) δὲ (and) ἱμάτια (the clothes) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐγένετο (became) λευκὰ (white) ὡς (as) τὸ (the) φῶς (light). ³ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ὤφθη (appeared) αὐτοῖς (to them) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) καὶ (and) Ἠλίας (Elijah), συλλαλοῦντες* (talking) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him). ⁴ ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Κύριε (Lord), καλόν (good) ἐστιν (it is) ἡμᾶς (for us) ὧδε (here) εἶναι (to be). εἰ (If) θέλεις (You wish), ποιήσω (I will make) ὧδε (here) τρεῖς (three) σκηνάς (tabernacles), σοὶ (for You) μίαν (one), καὶ (and) Μωϋσεῖ (for Moses) μίαν (one), καὶ (and) Ἠλίᾳ (for Elijah) μίαν (one).” ⁵ Ἔτι (While yet) αὐτοῦ (he) λαλοῦντος (was speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), νεφέλη (a cloud) φωτεινὴ (bright) ἐπεσκίασεν (overshadowed) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased). ἀκούετε (Listen) αὐτοῦ (to Him)!” ⁶ καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἔπεσαν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (were terrified) σφόδρα (greatly). ⁷ Καὶ (And) προσῆλθεν (having come to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἁψάμενος (having touched) αὐτῶν (them), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἐγέρθητε (Rise up), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθε (be afraid).” ⁸ ἐπάραντες (Having lifted up) δὲ (and) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), οὐδένα (no one) εἶδον (they saw) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) αὐτὸν (Himself) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) μόνον (alone). ⁹ Καὶ (And) καταβαινόντων (as were descending) αὐτῶν (they) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (mountain), ἐνετείλατο (instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Μηδενὶ (To no one) εἴπητε (tell) τὸ (the) ὅραμα (vision), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγερθῇ (is risen).” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (Why) οὖν (then) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) λέγουσιν (say) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίαν (Elijah) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρῶτον (first)?” ¹¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἔρχεται (comes), καὶ (and) ἀποκαταστήσει (will restore) πάντα (all things). ¹² λέγω (I say) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἤδη (already) ἦλθεν (is come), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπέγνωσαν (they knew) αὐτὸν (him), ἀλλὰ* (but) ἐποίησαν (did) ἐν (to) αὐτῷ (him) ὅσα (whatever) ἠθέλησαν (they desired). οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) μέλλει (is about) πάσχειν (to suffer) ὑπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).” ¹³ τότε (Then) συνῆκαν (understood) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ὅτι (that) περὶ (concerning) Ἰωάννου (John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist) εἶπεν (He spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them). ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντων (they having come) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἄνθρωπος (a man) γονυπετῶν (kneeling down to) αὐτὸν (Him) ¹⁵ καὶ (and) λέγων (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), ἐλέησόν (have mercy on) μου (my) τὸν (-) υἱόν (son), ὅτι (for) σεληνιάζεται (he is epileptic) καὶ (and) κακῶς (miserably) πάσχει* (suffers); πολλάκις (often) γὰρ (for) πίπτει (he falls) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire), καὶ (and) πολλάκις (often) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) προσήνεγκα (I brought) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) σου (of You), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθησαν (they were able) αὐτὸν (him) θεραπεῦσαι (to heal).” ¹⁷ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ὦ (O) γενεὰ (generation) ἄπιστος (unbelieving) καὶ (and) διεστραμμένη (perverted), ἕως (how long) πότε (when) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) ἔσομαι (will I be)? ἕως (How long) πότε (when) ἀνέξομαι (will I bear with) ὑμῶν (you)? φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (to Me) αὐτὸν (him) ὧδε (here).” ¹⁸ καὶ (And) ἐπετίμησεν (rebuked) αὐτῷ (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon), καὶ (and) ἐθεραπεύθη (was healed) ὁ (the) παῖς (boy) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ἐκείνης (that). ¹⁹ Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), εἶπον (they said), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθημεν (were able) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out) αὐτό (it)?” ²⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) λέγει (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τὴν (the) ὀλιγοπιστίαν (little faith) ὑμῶν (of you). ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (If) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (as) κόκκον (a seed) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (to this), ‘Μετάβα (Move) ἔνθεν (from here) ἐκεῖ (to there),’ καὶ (and) μεταβήσεται (it will move). καὶ (And) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀδυνατήσει (will be impossible) ὑμῖν (for you).” ²¹ ²² Συστρεφομένων (Were abiding) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (they) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Γαλιλαίᾳ (Galilee), εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μέλλει (Is about) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοσθαι (to be betrayed) εἰς (into) χεῖρας (the hands) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ²³ καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθήσεται (He will be raised up).” καὶ (And) ἐλυπήθησαν (they were grieved) σφόδρα (deeply). ²⁴ Ἐλθόντων (Having come) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (they) εἰς (to) Καφαρναοὺμ (Capernaum), προσῆλθον (came) οἱ (those) τὰ (the) δίδραχμα (didrachmas) λαμβάνοντες (collecting) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said), “Ὁ (The) διδάσκαλος (Teacher) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐ (not) τελεῖ (does he pay) ‹τὰ› (the) δίδραχμα (didrachmas)?” ²⁵ Λέγει (He says), “Ναί (Yes).” Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντα (he having entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house), προέφθασεν (anticipated) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Τί (What) σοι (you) δοκεῖ (do think), Σίμων (Simon)? οἱ (The) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τίνων (whom) λαμβάνουσιν (do they receive) τέλη (custom) ἢ (or) κῆνσον (tribute)? ἀπὸ (From) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) αὐτῶν (of them), ἢ (or) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἀλλοτρίων (strangers)?” ²⁶ Εἰπόντος (He having said) δέ (now), “Ἀπὸ (From) τῶν (the) ἀλλοτρίων (strangers),” ἔφη (said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄρα¦Γε (Then) ἐλεύθεροί (free) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the) υἱοί (sons). ²⁷ ἵνα (That) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) σκανδαλίσωμεν (we might offend) αὐτούς (them), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (to) θάλασσαν (sea), βάλε (cast) ἄγκιστρον (a hook), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀναβάντα (having come up) πρῶτον (first) ἰχθὺν (fish) ἆρον (take), καὶ (and) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of it), εὑρήσεις (you will find) στατῆρα (a four-drachma coin). ἐκεῖνον (That) λαβὼν (having taken), δὸς (give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἀντὶ (for) ἐμοῦ (Me) καὶ (and) σοῦ (yourself).” ¹⁸ ¹ Ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour) προσῆλθον (came) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), λέγοντες (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) μείζων (the greatest) ἐστὶν (is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens)?” ² Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) παιδίον (a child), ἔστησεν (He set) αὐτὸ (it) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (midst) αὐτῶν (of them), ³ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) στραφῆτε (you turn) καὶ (and) γένησθε (become) ὡς (as) τὰ (the) παιδία (little children), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (shall you enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ⁴ ὅστις (Whoever) οὖν (therefore) ταπεινώσει (will humble) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὡς (as) τὸ (the) παιδίον (little child) τοῦτο (this), οὗτός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ⁵ καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) δέξηται (shall receive) ἓν (one) παιδίον (little child) τοιοῦτο (such) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives). ⁶ Ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (then) ἂν (-) σκανδαλίσῃ (shall cause to stumble) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) τῶν (-) πιστευόντων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), συμφέρει (it is better) αὐτῷ (for him) ἵνα (that) κρεμασθῇ (should be hung) μύλος (a millstone) ὀνικὸς (heavy) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) καταποντισθῇ (he be sunk) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πελάγει (depth) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea). ⁷ Οὐαὶ (Woe) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world) ἀπὸ (because of) τῶν (the) σκανδάλων (causes of sin). ἀνάγκη (Necessary are) γὰρ (for) ἐλθεῖν (to come) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (stumbling blocks), πλὴν (but) οὐαὶ (woe) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) τὸ (the) σκάνδαλον (offense) ἔρχεται (comes)! ⁸ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) σου (of you) ἢ (or) ὁ (the) πούς (foot) σου (of you) σκανδαλίζει (causes to sin) σε (you), ἔκκοψον (cut off) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); καλόν (better) σοί (for you) ἐστιν (it is) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) κυλλὸν (crippled) ἢ (or) χωλόν (lame), ἢ (than) δύο (two) χεῖρας (hands) ἢ (or) δύο (two) πόδας (feet) ἔχοντα (having), βληθῆναι (to be cast) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal). ⁹ καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) σκανδαλίζει (causes to sin) σε (you), ἔξελε (gouge out) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); καλόν (better) σοί (for you) ἐστιν (it is) μονόφθαλμον (one-eyed) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter), ἢ (than) δύο (two) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντα (having) βληθῆναι (to be cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire). ¹⁰ Ὁρᾶτε (See that) μὴ (not) καταφρονήσητε (you despise) ἑνὸς (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these). λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) διὰ (continually) παντὸς (always) βλέπουσι (behold) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens). ¹¹ ¹² Τί (What) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (do think)? ἐὰν (If) γένηταί (there should be) τινι (to any) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) πλανηθῇ (has gone astray) ἓν (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), οὐχὶ (not) ἀφήσει (will he leave) τὰ (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains), καὶ (and) πορευθεὶς (having gone), ζητεῖ (seek) τὸ (the one) πλανώμενον (going astray)? ¹³ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) γένηται (he should) εὑρεῖν (find) αὐτό (it), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) χαίρει (he rejoices) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτῷ (it) μᾶλλον (more) ἢ (than) ἐπὶ (over) τοῖς (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) τοῖς (-) μὴ (not) πεπλανημένοις (having gone astray). ¹⁴ οὕτως (Thus) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (it is) θέλημα (the will) ἔμπροσθεν (of) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens), ἵνα (that) ἀπόληται (should perish) ἓν (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these). ¹⁵ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) ἁμαρτήσῃ (sins) ‹εἰς (against) σὲ› (you) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you), ὕπαγε (go) ἔλεγξον (reprove) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (he will hear), παράλαβε (take) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you) ἔτι (more), ἕνα (one) ἢ (or) δύο (two), ἵνα (that) ‘Ἐπὶ (upon) στόματος (the testimony) δύο (of two) μαρτύρων (witnesses) ἢ (or) τριῶν (of three), σταθῇ (may be strengthened) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (word).’ ¹⁷ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) παρακούσῃ (he fails to listen) αὐτῶν (to them), εἰπὸν (tell it) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church). ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) τῆς (to the) ἐκκλησίας (church) παρακούσῃ (he fails to listen), ἔστω (let him be) σοι (to you) ὥσπερ (as) ὁ (the) ἐθνικὸς (pagan) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) τελώνης (tax collector). ¹⁸ Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) δήσητε (you shall bind) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (shall have been) δεδεμένα (bound) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven); καὶ (and) ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) λύσητε (you shall loose) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (shall have been) λελυμένα (loosed) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven). ¹⁹ Πάλιν (Again) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) δύο (two) συμφωνήσωσιν (might agree) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) περὶ (concerning) παντὸς (any) πράγματος (matter), οὗ (that) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσωνται (they shall ask), γενήσεται (it will be done) αὐτοῖς (for them) παρὰ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens). ²⁰ οὗ (Where) γάρ (for) εἰσιν (are) δύο (two) ἢ (or) τρεῖς (three) συνηγμένοι (gathered together) εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) ἐμὸν (My) ὄνομα (name), ἐκεῖ (there) εἰμι (am I) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) αὐτῶν (of them).” ²¹ Τότε (Then) προσελθὼν (having come), «ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν» (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), ποσάκις (how often) ἁμαρτήσει (will sin) εἰς (against) ἐμὲ (me) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) μου (of me), καὶ (and) ἀφήσω (I will forgive) αὐτῷ (him)? ἕως (Up to) ἑπτάκις (seven times)?” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐ (Not) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ἕως (up to) ἑπτάκις (seven times), ἀλλὰ (but) ἕως (up to) ἑβδομηκοντάκις (seventy times) ἑπτά (seven)! ²³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὡμοιώθη (has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man), βασιλεῖ (a king), ὃς (who) ἠθέλησεν (desired) συνᾶραι (to settle) λόγον (accounts) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δούλων (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁴ ἀρξαμένου (Having begun) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he) συναίρειν (to settle), προσηνέχθη* (was brought) εἷς (one) αὐτῷ (to him), ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) μυρίων (of ten thousand) ταλάντων (talents). ²⁵ μὴ (Nothing) ἔχοντος (having) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) πραθῆναι (to be sold), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ὅσα (as many as) ἔχει (he had), καὶ (and) ἀποδοθῆναι (payment to be made). ²⁶ Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) προσεκύνει (was bowing on his knees) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (to you).’ ²⁷ Σπλαγχνισθεὶς (Having been moved with compassion) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (that) ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) δάνειον (debt) ἀφῆκεν (forgave) αὐτῷ (him). ²⁸ Ἐξελθὼν (Having gone out) δὲ (however), ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (same) εὗρεν (found) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) συνδούλων (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὃς (who) ὤφειλεν (was owing) αὐτῷ (him) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) δηνάρια (denarii), καὶ (and) κρατήσας (having seized) αὐτὸν (him) ἔπνιγεν (he was throttling him), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀπόδος (Pay) εἴ (if) τι (any) ὀφείλεις (you owe).’ ²⁹ Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore), ὁ (the) σύνδουλος (fellow servant) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρεκάλει (was begging) αὐτὸν (him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (you).’ ³⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he was willing), ἀλλὰ (rather) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ἔβαλεν (he cast) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἕως (until) ‹οὗ› (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) τὸ (that which) ὀφειλόμενον (was owing). ³¹ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) σύνδουλοι (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα (having taken place), ἐλυπήθησαν (they were grieved) σφόδρα (deeply), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντες (having gone), διεσάφησαν (narrated) τῷ (to) κυρίῳ (master) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) γενόμενα (having taken place). ³² Τότε (Then) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to) αὐτὸν (him), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Δοῦλε (Servant) πονηρέ (evil), πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) ὀφειλὴν (debt) ἐκείνην (that) ἀφῆκά (I forgave) σοι (you), ἐπεὶ (because) παρεκάλεσάς (you begged) με (me). ³³ οὐκ (Not) ἔδει (did it behoove) καὶ (also) σὲ (you) ἐλεῆσαι (to have pitied) τὸν (the) σύνδουλόν (fellow servant) σου (of you), ὡς (as) κἀγὼ (also I) σὲ (you) ἠλέησα (had pitied)?’ ³⁴ καὶ (And) ὀργισθεὶς (having been angry), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρέδωκεν (delivered) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (to the) βασανισταῖς (jailers), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) πᾶν (all) τὸ (-) ὀφειλόμενον (being owed) 〈αὐτῷ〉 (to him). ³⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) ποιήσει (will do) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) ἕκαστος (each) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) καρδιῶν (heart) ὑμῶν (of you).” ¹⁹ ¹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (had finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), μετῆρεν (He withdrew) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὅρια (region) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan). ² καὶ (And) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοί (great), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκεῖ (there). ³ Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), πειράζοντες (testing) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰ (If) ἔξεστιν (is it lawful) ‹ἀνθρώπῳ› (for a man) ἀπολῦσαι (to divorce) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (a wife) αὐτοῦ (to him) κατὰ (for) πᾶσαν (every) αἰτίαν (cause)?” ⁴ Ὁ (Which) δὲ (now) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀνέγνωτε (have you read) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) κτίσας (having created), ἀπ’ (from the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) ‘Ἄρσεν (male) καὶ (and) θῆλυ (female) ἐποίησεν (made) αὐτοὺς (them)’ ⁵ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ἕνεκα (On account of) τούτου (this) καταλείψει (will leave) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) κολληθήσεται (be joined with) τῇ (the) γυναικὶ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἔσονται (will become) οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (into) σάρκα (flesh) μίαν (one)’?— ⁶ ὥστε (so that) οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰσὶν (are they) δύο (two), ἀλλὰ (but) σὰρξ (flesh) μία (one). ὃ (What) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) συνέζευξεν (united together), ἄνθρωπος (man) μὴ (not) χωριζέτω (let separate).” ⁷ Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Τί (Why) οὖν (then) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ἐνετείλατο (did command) δοῦναι (to give) βιβλίον (a roll) ἀποστασίου (of divorce), καὶ (and) ἀπολῦσαι (to send away) ‹αὐτήν› (her)?” ⁸ Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them) Ὅτι (-), “Μωϋσῆς (Moses) πρὸς (in view of) τὴν (the) σκληροκαρδίαν (hardness of heart) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπέτρεψεν (allowed) ὑμῖν (you) ἀπολῦσαι (to divorce) τὰς (the) γυναῖκας (wives) ὑμῶν (of you); ἀπ’ (from the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) γέγονεν (was it) οὕτως (this way). ⁹ λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) ἀπολύσῃ (shall divorce) τὴν (-) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him) μὴ (except) ἐπὶ (for) πορνείᾳ (sexual immorality), καὶ (and) γαμήσῃ (shall marry) ἄλλην (another), μοιχᾶται (commits adultery).” ¹⁰ Λέγουσιν (Say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) [αὐτοῦ] (of Him) “Εἰ (If) οὕτως (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) αἰτία (case) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) μετὰ (with) τῆς (the) γυναικός (wife), οὐ (not) συμφέρει (it is better) γαμῆσαι (to marry).” ¹¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐ (Not) πάντες (all) χωροῦσιν (receive) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦτον (this), ἀλλ’ (but only those) οἷς (to whom) δέδοται (it has been given). ¹² εἰσὶν (There are) γὰρ (for) εὐνοῦχοι (eunuchs) οἵτινες (who) ἐκ (from the) κοιλίας (womb) μητρὸς (of their mother) ἐγεννήθησαν (were born) οὕτως (thus), καὶ (and) εἰσὶν (there are) εὐνοῦχοι (eunuchs) οἵτινες (who) εὐνουχίσθησαν (were made eunuchs) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), καὶ (and) εἰσὶν (there are) εὐνοῦχοι (eunuchs) οἵτινες (who) εὐνούχισαν (made eunuchs of) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) διὰ (for the sake of) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ὁ (The one) δυνάμενος (being able) χωρεῖν (to receive it), χωρείτω (let him receive it).” ¹³ Τότε (Then) προσηνέχθησαν (were brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) παιδία (little children), ἵνα (that) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπιθῇ (He might lay) αὐτοῖς (on them), καὶ (and) προσεύξηται (He might pray). οἱ (-) δὲ (however) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) ἐπετίμησαν (rebuked) αὐτοῖς (them). ¹⁴ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἄφετε (Permit) τὰ (the) παιδία (little children), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) κωλύετε (do forbid) αὐτὰ (them) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρός (to) με (Me); τῶν (of the) γὰρ (for) τοιούτων (such kind) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).” ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ἐπιθεὶς (having laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτοῖς (upon them), ἐπορεύθη (He departed) ἐκεῖθεν (from there). ¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), εἷς (one) προσελθὼν (having come) αὐτῷ (to Him), εἶπεν (said), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), τί (what) ἀγαθὸν (good thing) ποιήσω (shall I do), ἵνα (that) σχῶ (I might have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal)?” ¹⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Τί (Why) με (Me) ἐρωτᾷς (ask you) περὶ (about) τοῦ (what is) ἀγαθοῦ (good)? εἷς (Only One) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) ἀγαθός (good). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) θέλεις (you desire) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter), τήρησον* (keep) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments).” ¹⁸ Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ποίας (Which)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν* (said), “‘Τὸ (-) Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (shall you murder), Οὐ (not) μοιχεύσεις (shall you commit adultery), Οὐ (not) κλέψεις (shall you steal), Οὐ (not) ψευδομαρτυρήσεις (shall you bear false witness), ¹⁹ Τίμα (you shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother), καὶ (and) Ἀγαπήσεις (you shall love) τὸν (-) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’” ²⁰ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) νεανίσκος (young man), “Ταῦτα (Things) πάντα (all these) ἐφύλαξα (I have kept). τί (What) ἔτι (yet) ὑστερῶ (lack I)?” ²¹ Ἔφη (Was saying) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) θέλεις (you desire) τέλειος (perfect) εἶναι (to be), ὕπαγε (go), πώλησόν (sell) σου (of you) τὰ (the) ὑπάρχοντα (possessing), καὶ (and) δὸς (give) [τοῖς] (to the) πτωχοῖς (poor), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) θησαυρὸν (treasure) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens); καὶ (and) δεῦρο (come), ἀκολούθει (follow) μοι (Me).” ²² Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) νεανίσκος (young man) τὸν (the) λόγον (statement) (τοῦτον) (this), ἀπῆλθεν (he went away) λυπούμενος (grieving); ἦν (he was one) γὰρ (for) ἔχων (having) κτήματα (possessions) πολλά (many). ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πλούσιος (a rich man) δυσκόλως (with difficulty) εἰσελεύσεται (will enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ²⁴ πάλιν (Again) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), εὐκοπώτερόν (easier for) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (a camel) διὰ (through the) τρυπήματος (eye) ῥαφίδος (of a needle) εἰσελθεῖν (to go), ἢ (than) πλούσιον (a rich man) [εἰσελθεῖν] (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).” ²⁵ Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (now), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) σφόδρα (exceedingly), λέγοντες (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) δύναται (is able) σωθῆναι (to be saved)?” ²⁶ Ἐμβλέψας (Having looked on them) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Παρὰ (With) ἀνθρώποις (men) τοῦτο (this) ἀδύνατόν (impossible) ἐστιν (is), παρὰ (with) δὲ (however) Θεῷ (God) πάντα (all things are) δυνατά (possible).” ²⁷ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφήκαμεν (left) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) ἠκολουθήσαμέν (followed) σοι (You); τί (what) ἄρα (then) ἔσται (will be) ἡμῖν (to us)?” ²⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ὑμεῖς (you) οἱ (-) ἀκολουθήσαντές (having followed) μοι (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παλινγενεσίᾳ (regeneration), ὅταν (when) καθίσῃ (shall sit down) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐπὶ (upon) θρόνου (the throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καθήσεσθε (will sit) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς* (you) ἐπὶ (on) δώδεκα (twelve) θρόνους (thrones), κρίνοντες (judging) τὰς (the) δώδεκα (twelve) φυλὰς (tribes) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel). ²⁹ καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὅστις (who) ἀφῆκεν (has left) οἰκίας (houses), ἢ (or) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), ἢ (or) ἀδελφὰς (sisters), ἢ (or) πατέρα (father), ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), ‹ἢ (or) γυναῖκα› (wife), ἢ (or) τέκνα (children), ἢ (or) ἀγροὺς (lands), ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (-) μου* (My) ὀνόματός (name), ἑκατονταπλασίονα* (a hundredfold) λήμψεται (will receive), καὶ (and) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) κληρονομήσει (will inherit). ³⁰ Πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (however) ἔσονται (will be) πρῶτοι (first) ἔσχατοι (last), καὶ (and) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first). ²⁰ ¹ Ὁμοία (Like) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man), οἰκοδεσπότῃ (a master of a house), ὅστις (who) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ἅμα (in the) πρωῒ (morning) μισθώσασθαι (to hire) ἐργάτας (workmen) εἰς (for) τὸν (the) ἀμπελῶνα (vineyard) αὐτοῦ (of him). ² συμφωνήσας (Having agreed) δὲ (then) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἐργατῶν (workmen) ἐκ (for) δηναρίου (a denarius) τὴν (for the) ἡμέραν (day), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ἀμπελῶνα (vineyard) αὐτοῦ (of him). ³ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out) περὶ (about) τρίτην (the third) ὥραν (hour), εἶδεν (he saw) ἄλλους (others) ἑστῶτας (standing) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγορᾷ (marketplace) ἀργούς (idle), ⁴ καὶ (and) ἐκείνοις (to them) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ὑπάγετε (Go) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ἀμπελῶνα (vineyard), καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ᾖ (might be) δίκαιον (right), δώσω (I will give) ὑμῖν (you).’ ⁵ οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀπῆλθον (they went). ἑνδεκάτην (eleventh), ἐξελθὼν (having gone out), εὗρεν (he found) ἄλλους (others) ἑστῶτας (standing), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Τί (Why) ὧδε (here) ἑστήκατε (stand you) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) ἀργοί (idle)?’ ⁷ Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Ὅτι (Because) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐμισθώσατο (has hired).’ Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ὑπάγετε (Go) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (You) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ἀμπελῶνα (vineyard).’ ⁸ Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (then) γενομένης (having arrived), λέγει (says) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) τῷ (to) ἐπιτρόπῳ (foreman) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Κάλεσον (Call) τοὺς (the) ἐργάτας (workmen) καὶ (and) ἀπόδος (pay) ‹αὐτοῖς› (them) τὸν (the) μισθόν (wages), ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐσχάτων (last) ἕως (unto) τῶν (the) πρώτων (first).’ ⁹ Καὶ* (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) οἱ (those hired) περὶ (about) τὴν (the) ἑνδεκάτην (eleventh) ὥραν (hour), ἔλαβον (they received) ἀνὰ (each) δηνάριον (a denarius). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (first), ἐνόμισαν (they thought) ὅτι (that) πλεῖον (more) λήμψονται (they will receive), καὶ (but) ἔλαβον (they received) τὸ (those) ἀνὰ (each) δηνάριον (a denarius) καὶ (also) αὐτοί (themselves). ¹¹ Λαβόντες (Having received), δὲ (now) ἐγόγγυζον (they were grumbling) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) οἰκοδεσπότου (master of the house), ¹² λέγοντες (saying), ‘Οὗτοι (These) οἱ (the) ἔσχατοι (last), μίαν (one) ὥραν (hour) ἐποίησαν (have worked), καὶ (and) ἴσους (equal) αὐτοὺς (them) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐποίησας (you have made), τοῖς (those) βαστάσασι (having borne) τὸ (the) βάρος (burden) τῆς (of the) ἡμέρας (day) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καύσωνα (scorching heat).’ ¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) ἑνὶ (to one) αὐτῶν (of them), εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἑταῖρε (Friend), οὐκ (not) ἀδικῶ (I do wrong) σε (you). οὐχὶ (Not) δηναρίου (for a denarius) συνεφώνησάς (did you agree with) μοι (me)? ¹⁴ ἆρον (Take) τὸ (what is) σὸν (yours) καὶ (and) ὕπαγε (go). θέλω (I desire) δὲ (now) τούτῳ (to this) τῷ (-) ἐσχάτῳ (last) δοῦναι (to give), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) σοί (to you). ¹⁵ [ἢ] (Or) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστίν (is it lawful) μοι (for me) ὃ (what) θέλω (I will) ποιῆσαι (to do) ἐν (with) τοῖς (that which is) ἐμοῖς (mine)? ἢ (Or) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) πονηρός (envious) ἐστιν (is), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ἀγαθός (generous) εἰμι (am)?’ ¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) ἔσονται (will be) οἱ (the) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (first), ἔσχατοι (last).” ¹⁷ ‹Καὶ (And) ἀναβαίνων (going up) ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), παρέλαβεν (He took) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (twelve) ‹μαθητὰς› (disciples) κατ’ (aside) ἰδίαν (themselves), καὶ (and) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), ¹⁸ “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀναβαίνομεν (we go up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδοθήσεται (will be betrayed) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχιερεῦσιν (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματεῦσιν (scribes), καὶ (and) κατακρινοῦσιν (they will condemn) αὐτὸν (Him) 〈εἰς〉 (to) θανάτῳ* (death), ¹⁹ καὶ (and) παραδώσουσιν (they will betray) αὐτὸν (Him) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εἰς (unto), τὸ (-) ἐμπαῖξαι (to mock) καὶ (and) μαστιγῶσαι (to flog) καὶ (and) σταυρῶσαι (to crucify); καὶ (and) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθήσεται (He will rise again).” ²⁰ Τότε (Then) προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) Ζεβεδαίου (of Zebedee) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) αὐτῆς (of her), προσκυνοῦσα (kneeling down), καὶ (and) αἰτοῦσά (asking) τι (something) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him). ²¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Τί (What) θέλεις (do you desire)?” Λέγει (She says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰπὲ (Say) ἵνα (that) καθίσωσιν (might sit) οὗτοι (these) οἱ (-) δύο (two) υἱοί (sons) μου (of mine), εἷς (one) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) ‹σου› (of You) καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left hand) σου (of You), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) σου (of You).” ²² Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (you know) τί (what) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask for). δύνασθε (Are you able) πιεῖν (to drink) τὸ (the) ποτήριον (cup) ὃ (which) ἐγὼ (I) μέλλω (am about) πίνειν (to drink)?” Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Δυνάμεθα (We are able).” ²³ Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὸ (-) μὲν (Indeed) ποτήριόν (the cup) μου (of Me) πίεσθε (You will drink), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) καθίσαι (to sit) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐμὸν (Mine) τοῦτο (this) δοῦναι (to give), ἀλλ’ (but to those) οἷς (for whom) ἡτοίμασται (it has been prepared) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me).” ²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard this), οἱ (the) δέκα (ten) ἠγανάκτησαν (were indignant) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἀδελφῶν (brothers). ²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) αὐτοὺς (them), εἶπεν (said), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μεγάλοι (great ones) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ²⁶ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) ἔσται* (will it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ²⁷ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to be) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) δοῦλος (slave); ²⁸ ὥσπερ (even as) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).” ²⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐκπορευομένων (as were going out) αὐτῶν (they) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰεριχὼ (Jericho), ἠκολούθησεν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολύς (great). ³⁰ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), δύο (two) τυφλοὶ (blind men) καθήμενοι (sitting) παρὰ (beside) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (road), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) παράγει (is passing by), ἔκραξαν (cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), «ἐλέησον (Have mercy on) ἡμᾶς» (us), υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David).” ³¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ὄχλος (the crowd) ἐπετίμησεν (rebuked) αὐτοῖς (them), ἵνα (that) σιωπήσωσιν (they should be silent). οἱ (-) δὲ (But) μεῖζον (all the more) ἔκραξαν (they cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), «ἐλέησον (have mercy on) ἡμᾶς» (us), υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David).” ³² Καὶ (And) στὰς (having stopped), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐφώνησεν (called) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Τί (What) θέλετε (do you desire) ποιήσω (I should do) ὑμῖν (unto you)?” ³³ Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), ἵνα (that) ἀνοιγῶσιν (might be opened) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) ἡμῶν (of us).” ³⁴ Σπλαγχνισθεὶς (Having been moved with compassion) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἥψατο (touched) τῶν (the) ὀμμάτων (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) εὐθέως (immediately) ἀνέβλεψαν (they received sight), καὶ (and) ἠκολούθησαν (they followed) αὐτῷ (Him). ²¹ ¹ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἤγγισαν (they drew near) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἦλθον (came) εἰς (to) Βηθφαγὴ (Bethphage) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), τότε (then) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) δύο (two) μαθητὰς (disciples), ² λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορεύεσθε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village) τὴν (-) κατέναντι (in front) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) εὐθέως* (immediately) εὑρήσετε (you will find) ὄνον (a donkey) δεδεμένην (having been tied), καὶ (and) πῶλον (a colt) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her); λύσαντες (having untied them), ἀγάγετέ (bring them) μοι (to Me). ³ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says) τι (anything), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) ὅτι (that) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has). εὐθὺς (Immediately) δὲ (then) ἀποστελεῖ (he will send) αὐτούς (them).” ⁴ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (then) γέγονεν (came to pass) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῇ (it might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), ⁵ “Εἴπατε (Say) τῇ (to the) θυγατρὶ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεταί (comes) σοι (to you), πραῢς (gentle) καὶ (and) ἐπιβεβηκὼς (mounted) ἐπὶ (on) ὄνον (a donkey), καὶ (even) ἐπὶ (upon) πῶλον (a colt), υἱὸν (the foal) ὑποζυγίου (of a beast of burden).’” ⁶ Πορευθέντες (Having gone) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) καὶ (and) ποιήσαντες (having done) καθὼς (as) συνέταξεν (commanded) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ⁷ ἤγαγον (they brought) τὴν (the) ὄνον (donkey) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), καὶ (and) ἐπέθηκαν (put) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (their) ἱμάτια (cloaks), καὶ (and) ἐπεκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπάνω (on) αὐτῶν (them). ⁸ Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) πλεῖστος (very great) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔστρωσαν (spread) ἑαυτῶν (their) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (cloaks) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) ἔκοπτον (were cutting down) κλάδους (branches) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) δένδρων (trees) καὶ (and) ἐστρώννυον (were spreading them) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road). ⁹ Οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) οἱ (-) προάγοντες (going before) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out), λέγοντες (saying): “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθόντος (having entered) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ἐσείσθη (was stirred) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) πόλις (city), λέγουσα (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this)?” ¹¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ὄχλοι (the crowds) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee).” ¹² Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐξέβαλεν (cast out) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling) καὶ (and) ἀγοράζοντας (buying) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) τραπέζας (tables) τῶν (of the) κολλυβιστῶν (money changers) κατέστρεψεν (He overturned), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) καθέδρας (seats) τῶν (of those) πωλούντων (selling) τὰς (the) περιστεράς (doves). ¹³ καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Ὁ (The) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer) κληθήσεται (will be called).’ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (it) ποιεῖτε (have made) ‘Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).’” ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) τυφλοὶ (blind) καὶ (and) χωλοὶ (lame) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them). ¹⁵ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τὰ (the) θαυμάσια (wonders) ἃ (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (children) τοὺς (the) κράζοντας (crying out) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) λέγοντας (saying), “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David),” ἠγανάκτησαν (they were indignant) ¹⁶ καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἀκούεις (Hear you) τί (what) οὗτοι (these) λέγουσιν (say)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ναί (Yes), οὐδέποτε (never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you read) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἐκ (Out of the) στόματος (mouth) νηπίων (of babes) καὶ (and) θηλαζόντων (sucklings), Κατηρτίσω (You have prepared for yourself) αἶνον (praise)’?” ¹⁷ Καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἐξῆλθεν (He went) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), καὶ (and) ηὐλίσθη (He passed the night) ἐκεῖ (there). ¹⁸ Πρωῒ (In the morning) δὲ (then), ἐπανάγων* (having come back) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἐπείνασεν (He became hungry). ¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (fig tree) μίαν (one) ἐπὶ (along) τῆς (the) ὁδοῦ (road), ἦλθεν (He came) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτήν (it) καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (found) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves) μόνον (only). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to it), “〈Οὐ〉 (Never) μηκέτι (no more) ἐκ (from) σοῦ (you) καρπὸς (fruit) γένηται (let there be), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” καὶ (And) ἐξηράνθη (withered) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (having seen it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled), λέγοντες (saying), “Πῶς (How) παραχρῆμα (so quickly) ἐξηράνθη (withered) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree)?” ²¹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) διακριθῆτε (do doubt), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τὸ (the miracle) τῆς (of the) συκῆς (fig tree) ποιήσετε (will you do), ἀλλὰ (but) κἂν (even if) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this) εἴπητε (you should say), ‘Ἄρθητι (Be you taken away) καὶ (and) βλήθητι (be you cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea),’ γενήσεται (it will come to pass). ²² καὶ (And) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (prayer), πιστεύοντες (believing), λήμψεσθε (you will receive).” ²³ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντος (having come) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) διδάσκοντι (teaching), οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐν (By) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (are You doing)? καὶ (And) τίς (who) σοι (to You) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this)?” ²⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (thing) ἕνα (one), ὃν (which) ἐὰν (if) εἴπητέ (you tell) μοι (Me), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐρῶ (will say) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ²⁵ τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) τὸ (of) Ἰωάννου (John), πόθεν (from where) ἦν (was it)? ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἢ (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) ἐν (with) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven),’ ἐρεῖ (He will say) ἡμῖν (to us), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὖν (then) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you believe) αὐτῷ (him)?’ ²⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ φοβούμεθα (we fear) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) ἔχουσιν (hold) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John).” ²⁷ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (do we know).” Ἔφη (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (also) αὐτός (He), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ²⁸ Τί (What) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (think)? ἄνθρωπος (A man) εἶχεν (had) τέκνα (sons) δύο (two), [καὶ] (and) προσελθὼν (having come) τῷ (to the) πρώτῳ (first) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Τέκνον (Son), ὕπαγε (go) σήμερον (today), ἐργάζου (work) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard).’ ²⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘‹Οὐ (Not) θέλω (will I).’ ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (however), μεταμεληθεὶς› (having repented), ἀπῆλθεν (he went). ³⁰ Προσελθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) δευτέρῳ (second), εἶπεν (he said) ὡσαύτως (likewise). Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἐγώ* (I will) κύριε* (sir),’ καὶ* (and) οὐκ* (not) ἀπῆλθεν (did he go). ³¹ Τίς (Which) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἐποίησεν (did) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father)?” Λέγουσιν (They say), “Ὁ (The) πρῶτος* (first).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) προάγουσιν (go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³² ἦλθεν (Came) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in the) ὁδῷ (way) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (you did believe) αὐτῷ (him), οἱ (-) δὲ (however) τελῶναι (the tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) αὐτῷ (him); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (then), ἰδόντες (having seen), οὐδὲ (not even) μετεμελήθητε (did repent) ὕστερον (afterward) τοῦ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτῷ (him). ³³ Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) ἀκούσατε (hear): Ἄνθρωπος (A man) ἦν (there was), οἰκοδεσπότης (a master of a house), ὅστις (who) ἐφύτευσεν (planted) ἀμπελῶνα (a vineyard), καὶ (and) φραγμὸν (a fence) αὐτῷ (it) περιέθηκεν (placed around), καὶ (and) ὤρυξεν (dug) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it) ληνὸν (a winepress), καὶ (and) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) πύργον (a tower), καὶ (and) ἐξέδετο (rented out) αὐτὸν (it) γεωργοῖς (to farmers), καὶ (and) ἀπεδήμησεν (traveled abroad). ³⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (then) ἤγγισεν (drew near) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (season) τῶν (of the) καρπῶν (fruits), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) γεωργοὺς (farmers) λαβεῖν (to receive) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτοῦ (of him). ³⁵ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἔδειραν (they beat), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἐλιθοβόλησαν (they stoned). ³⁶ Πάλιν (Again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) ἄλλους (other) δούλους (servants), πλείονας (more) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὡσαύτως (likewise). ³⁷ Ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (then), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἐντραπήσονται (They will respect) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me).’ ³⁸ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) γεωργοὶ (the farmers) ἰδόντες (having seen) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son), εἶπον (said) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ‘Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κληρονόμος (heir); δεῦτε (come), ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) σχῶμεν (gain possession of) τὴν (the) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ ³⁹ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taking) αὐτὸν (him), ἐξέβαλον (they cast him) ἔξω (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed him). ⁴⁰ Ὅταν (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard), τί (what) ποιήσει (will he do) τοῖς (the) γεωργοῖς (farmers) ἐκείνοις (to those)?” ⁴¹ Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to him), “Κακοὺς (The wretches), κακῶς (grievously) ἀπολέσει (He will destroy) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀμπελῶνα (vineyard) ἐκδώσεται (he will rent out) ἄλλοις (to other) γεωργοῖς (farmers), οἵτινες (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) αὐτῷ (to him) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) καιροῖς (seasons) αὐτῶν (of them).” ⁴² Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you read) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) γραφαῖς (Scriptures): ‘Λίθον (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), Οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (the) κεφαλὴν (chief) γωνίας (corner). Παρὰ (From) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἐγένετο (was) αὕτη (this), Καὶ (and) ἔστιν (it is) θαυμαστὴ (marvelous) ἐν (in) ὀφθαλμοῖς (the eyes) ἡμῶν (of us)?’? ⁴³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) δοθήσεται (it will be given) ἔθνει (to a people) ποιοῦντι (producing) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτῆς (of it). ⁴⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone) τοῦτον (this) συνθλασθήσεται (will be broken); ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (whomever) δ’ (but) ἂν (-) πέσῃ (it shall fall), λικμήσει (it will grind to powder) αὐτόν (him).” ⁴⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) τὰς (the) παραβολὰς (parables) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔγνωσαν (they knew) ὅτι (that) περὶ (about) αὐτῶν (them) λέγει (He speaks). ⁴⁶ καὶ (And) ζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπεὶ (because) εἰς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (Him) εἶχον (they were holding).
