Matthew 19:3-9 And the Pharisees came to him to tempt him, and said to him: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Anderson⁽ⁱ⁾ ³ And the Pharisees came to him to tempt him, and said to him: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? ⁴ He answered and said to them: Have you not read that the Creator, at the beginning, created them male and female, ⁵ and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh? ⁶ So then, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man put asunder. ⁷ They said to him: Why, then, did Moses command us to give a bill of divorce and put her away? ⁸ He said to them: Moses, on account of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. ⁹ But I say to you, That whoever puts away his wife, unless for lewdness, and marries another, commits adultery; and he that marries her that is put away, commits adultery.
