Jeremiah 38

  1 G2532 And G191 [⁴heard G* ¹Shephatiah G5207 ²son G* ³of Mattan], G2532 and G* Gedaliah G5207 son G* of Pashur, G2532 and G* Jucal G5207 son G* of Shelemiah, G2532 and G* Pashur G5207 son G* of Malchiah, G3588 the G3056 words G3739 which G* Jeremiah G2980 spoke G1909 unto G3588 the G2992 people, G3004 saying,

  2 G3779 Thus G2036 said G2962 the lord, G3588 The one G2730 dwelling G1722 in G3588   G4172 this city G3778   G599 shall die G1722 by G4501 the broadsword, G2532 and G1722 by G3042 famine, G2532 and G1722 by G3061 pestilence; G2532 and G3588 the one G1607 going forth G4314 to G3588 the G* Chaldeans G2198 shall live; G2532 and G1510.8.3 [²shall be G3588   G5590 ¹his life] G1473   G1519 for G2146.2 gain, G2532 and G2198 he shall live.

  3 G3754 For G3779 thus G2036 said G2962 the lord, G3860 In being delivered up, G3860 [²shall be delivered up G3588   G4172 ¹this city] G3778   G1519 into G5495 the hands G1411 of the force G935 of the king G* of Babylon, G2532 and G4815 he shall seize G1473 it.

  4 G2532 And G2036 [³said G3588 ¹the G758 ²rulers] G3588 to the G935 king, G337 Do away with G1211 [²indeed G3588   G444 ¹that man], G1565   G3754 for G1473 he G1590 enfeebles G3588 the G5495 hands G3588 of the G444 men G3588   G4170 waging war G3588 of the ones G2641 being left G1722 in G3588   G4172 this city, G3778   G2532 and G3588 the G5495 hands G3956 of all G3588 the G2992 people, G2980 by speaking G4314 to G1473 them G2596 according to G3588   G3056 these words. G3778   G3754 For G3588   G444 this man G3778   G3756 does not G5540.1 speak oracles G1515 for peace G3588 to G2992 this people, G3778   G237.1 but only G4190 evils.

  5 G2532 And G2036 [³said G3588   G935 ¹king G* ²Zedekiah], G2400 Behold, G1473 he G1722 is in G5495 your hands; G1473   G3754 for G3756 [³was not G1410 ⁴able G3588 ¹the G935 ²king] G4314 to G1473 resist them.

  6 G2532 And G2983 they took G3588   G* Jeremiah, G2532 and G4495 they tossed G1473 him G1519 into G3588 the G2978.1 pit G* of Malchiah, G5207 son G3588 of the G935 king, G3739 which G1510.7.3 was G1722 in G3588 the G833 courtyard G3588 of the G5438 guard. G2532 And G5465 they let him down G1473   G1722 with G4979 rough cords G1519 into G3588 the G2978.1 pit. G2532 And G1722 in G3588 the G2978.1 pit G3756 there was no G1510.7.3   G5204 water, G237.1 but only G1004 mire, G2532 and G1510.7.3 he was G1722 in G3588 the G1004 mire.

  7 G2532 And G191 [⁶heard G* ¹Ebed-melech G3588 ²the G* ³Ethiopian G435 ⁵man G2135 ⁴eunuch] G2532 (and G1510.7.3 he was G1473   G1722 in G3588 the G833 courtyard G3588 of the G935 king) G3754 that G1685 they cast G3588   G* Jeremiah G1519 into G3588 the G2978.1 pit; G2532 and G3588 the G935 king G2521 was sitting down G1722 at G3588 the G4439 gate G* of Benjamin.

  8 G2532 And G1831 Ebed-melech went forth G*   G575 from G3588 the G3624 house G935 of the king, G2532 and G2980 he spoke G4314 to G3588 the G935 king, G2532 and G2036 said,

  9 G2962 My master, G1473   G935 O King, G4188.2 [³did wickedly G3588   G435 ²these men G1565   G3956 ¹all] G3739 in which G4160 they did G2596 against G3588   G* Jeremiah G3588 the G4396 prophet, G4495 dropping G1473 him G1519 into G3588 the G2978.1 pit, G2443 that G599 he should die G1722 in G1473 it G575 from G4383 the face G3588   G3042 of hunger, G3754 for G3756 there are no G1510.2.6   G2089 longer G740 bread loaves G1722 in G3588 the G4172 city.

  10 G2532 And G1781 [³gave charge G3588 ¹the G935 ²king] G3588 to G* Ebed-melech, G3004 saying, G2983 Take G3326 with G4572 yourself G1782 from here G5144 thirty G435 men, G2532 and G321 lead G1473 him G1537 from out of G3588 the G2978.1 pit, G2443 that G3361 he should not G599 die.

  11 G2532 And G2983 Ebed-melech took G*   G3588 the G444 men, G2532 and G1525 he entered G1519 into G3588 the G3614 house G3588 of the G935 king, G3588 the G5260.2 subterranean part, G2532 and G2983 he took G1564 from there G3820 old G4470 rags G2532 and G3820 old G4979 rough cords; G2532 and G4495 he tossed G1473 them G4314 to G* Jeremiah G1519 in G3588 the G2978.1 pit.

  12 G2532 And G2036 he said G4314 to G1473 him, G5087 Put G3778 these G5270 underneath G3588 the G4979 rough cords! G2532 And G4160 Jeremiah did G*   G3779 so.

  13 G2532 And G1670 they drew G1473 him G1722 with G3588 the G4979 rough cords, G2532 and G321 led him up G1473   G1537 from out of G3588 the G2978.1 pit. G2532 And G2523 Jeremiah stayed G*   G1722 in G3588 the G833 courtyard G3588 of the G5438 guard.

  14 G2532 And G649 [³sent G3588 ¹the G935 ²king] G2532 and G2564 called G1473 him G4314 to G1438 himself G1519 into G3614 the house G* Asaliseel, G3588 the one G1722 in G3624 the house G2962 of the lord . G2532 And G2036 [³said G1473 ⁴to him G3588 ¹the G935 ²king], G2065 I shall ask G1473 you G3056 a word, G2532 and G3361 you shall not G2928 hide G575 from G1473 me G4487 the saying.

  15 G2532 And G2036 Jeremiah said G*   G3588 to the G935 king, G1437 If G312 I should announce G1473 to you, G3780 will you not G2288 to death G1473 put me to death? G2289   G2532 and G1437 if G4823 I shall advise G1473 you, G3766.2 in no way G191 shall you hear G1473 me.

  16 G2532 And G3660 [³swore by an oath G3588 ¹the G935 ²king] G1473 to him G2931 secretly, G3004 saying, G2198 As the lord lives, G2962   G3739 who G4160 appointed G1473 us G3588   G5590 this life, G3778   G1487 Shall I kill G615   G1473 you, G2532 and G1487 shall I put G1325   G1473 you G1519 into G5495 the hands G3588   G444 of these men, G3778   G3588 the ones G2212 seeking G3588   G5590 your life, No! G1473  

  17 G2532 And G2036 [²said G1473 ³to him G* ¹Jeremiah], G3779 Thus G2036 said G2962 the lord G3588 of the G1411 forces, G3588 the G2316 God G* of Israel, G1437 If G1831 by going forth G1831 you should go forth G4314 to G2232 the governors G935 of the king G* of Babylon, G2198 [²shall live G3588   G5590 ¹your soul], G1473   G2532 and G3588   G4172 this city G3778   G3766.2 in no way G2618 shall be incinerated G1722 by G4442 fire; G2532 and G2198 you shall live, G1473   G2532 and G3588   G3614 your family. G1473  

  18 G2532 But G1437 if G3361 you do not G1831 go forth, G1325 [²shall be given G3588   G4172 ¹this city] G3778   G1519 into G5495 the hands G3588 of the G* Chaldeans, G2532 and G2545 they shall burn G1473 it G1722 with G4442 fire, G2532 and G1473 in no way G3766.2   G4982 shall you be delivered G575 from G5495 their hands. G1473  

  19 G2532 And G2036 [³said G3588 ¹the G935 ²king] G3588   G* to Jeremiah, G1473 I G3056 [²a matter G2192 ¹have] G3588 with the G* Jews G3588   G5343 having fled G4314 to G3588 the G* Chaldeans, G3361 lest G1325 they give G1473 me G1519 into G5495 their hands, G1473   G2532 and G2651.1 they shall deride G1473 me.

  20 G2532 And G2036 Jeremiah said, G*   G3766.2 In no way G3860 shall they deliver you up. G1473   G191 Hearken to G3588 the G3056 word G2962 of the lord! G3739 which G1473 I G3004 say G4314 to G1473 you, G2532 and G957 [²better G1510.8.3 ¹it will be] G1473 for you, G2532 and G2198 [²shall live G3588   G5590 ¹your soul]! G1473  

  21 G2532 And G1508 if [²do not G2309 ³want G1473 ¹you] G1831 to come forth, G3778 this is G3588 the G3056 word G3739 which G1166 [²showed G1473 ³to me G2962 ¹ the lord].

  22 G2400 Behold, G3956 all G3588 the G1135 women G3588   G2641 being left behind G1722 in G3614 the house G935 of the king G* of Judah G1806 having been led out G4314 to G758 the rulers G935 of the king G* of Babylon; G2532 and G3778 these women G3004 shall say, G538 [³deceived G1473 ⁴you G2532 ⁵and G1410 ⁶prevailed over G1473 ⁷you G435 ¹ the men G1516 ²at peace with you], G1473   G2532 and G2647 they will depose you G1722 in G3643.2 slips G4228 of your feet; G1473   G654 they turned G575 from G1473 you.

  23 G2532 And G3588   G1135 your wives, G1473   G2532 and G3588   G5043 your children G1473   G1806 they shall lead out G4314 to G3588 the G* Chaldeans; G2532 and G1473 you G3766.2 in no way G4982 shall you be delivered, G3754 for G1722 by G5495 the hand G935 of the king G* of Babylon G4815 you shall be seized, G2532 and G3588   G4172 this city G3778   G2618 shall be incinerated.

  24 G2532 And G2036 [²said G1473 ³to him G3588   G* ¹Zedekiah], G4314 to G3588   G* Jeremiah, G444 [²no man G3361   G1097 ¹Let] know G1537 of G3588   G3056 these words! G3778   G2532 and G1473 you shall G3766.2 in no way G599 die.

  25 G2532 And G1437 if G3588 the G758 rulers G191 should hear G3754 that G2980 I spoke G1473 to you, G2532 and G2064 they should come G4314 to G1473 you, G2532 and G2036 should say G1473 to you; G312 Announce G1473 to us G5100 what G2980 you spoke G4314 to G3588 the G935 king, G3361 you should not hide it G2928   G575 from G1473 us, G2532 then G3766.2 in no way G337 will we do away with G1473 you; G2532 and G5100 what did G2980 [³say G4314 ⁴to G1473 ⁵you G3588 ¹the G935 ²king]?

  26 G2532 And G2046 you shall say G1473 to them, G4495 I tossed G1473   G3588   G1656 my plead for mercy G1473   G2596 before G3788 the eyes G3588 of the G935 king, G4314 to G3588   G3361 not G654 return G1473 me G1519 to G3614 the house G* of Jonathan G599 for me to die G1473   G1563 there.

  27 G2532 And G2064 came G3956 all G3588 the G758 rulers G4314 to G* Jeremiah, G2532 and G2065 they asked G1473 him. G2532 And G312 he announced G1473 to them G2596 according to G3956 all G3588   G3056 these words G3778   G3739 which G1781 [³gave charge G1473 ⁴to him G3588 ¹the G935 ²king]. G2532 And G642.4 they were silent, G3754 for G3756 [³was not heard G191   G3588 ¹the G3056 ²matter].

  28 G2532 And G2523 Jeremiah stayed G*   G1722 in G3588 the G833 courtyard G3588 of the G5438 guard G2193 until G5550 a time G3739 of which G4815 Jerusalem was seized. G*
