⁷ And he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them, ⁸ `When thou mayest be called by any one to marriage-feasts, thou mayest not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than thou may have been called by him, <sup>9</sup> and he who did call thee and him having come shall say to thee, Give to this one place, and then thou mayest begin with shame to occupy the last place. <sup>10</sup> `But, when thou mayest be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called thee may come, he may say to thee, Friend, come up higher; then thou shalt have glory before those reclining with thee; ¹¹ because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.' ¹² And he said also to him who did call him, `When thou mayest make a dinner or a supper, be not calling thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor rich neighbours, lest they may also call thee again, and a recompense may come to thee; ¹³ but when thou mayest make a feast, be calling poor, maimed, lame, blind, ¹⁴ and happy thou shalt be, because they have not to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed to thee in the rising again of the righteous.'

²³ for all did sin, and are come short of the glory of God—

⁹ not of works, that no one may boast;

¹⁰ And thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? or again, thou, why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand at the tribunal of the Christ; ¹¹ for it hath been written, `I live! saith the Lord—to Me bow shall every knee, and every tongue shall confess to God;' ¹² so, then, each of us concerning himself shall give reckoning to God;

² as new-born babes the word's pure milk desire ye, that in it ye may grow,

¹⁰ to know him, and the power of his rising again, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death,

²² and become ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves,

¹⁷ Be obedient to those leading you, and be subject, for these do watch for your souls, as about to give account, that with joy they may do this, and not sighing, for this is unprofitable to you.

¹⁵ be diligent to present thyself approved to God—a workman irreproachable, rightly dividing the word of the truth;

¹¹ A fool bringeth out all his mind, And the wise till afterwards restraineth it.

¹⁰⁵ Nun. A lamp to my foot is Thy word, And a light to my path.

²⁹ take up my yoke upon you, and learn from me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls,

⁴ whoever then may humble himself as this child, he is the greater in the reign of the heavens.

⁶ be humbled, then, under the powerful hand of God, that you He may exalt in good time,

⁹ if we may confess our sins, stedfast He is and righteous that He may forgive us the sins, and may cleanse us from every unrighteousness;

²¹ wherefore having put aside all filthiness and superabundance of evil, in meekness be receiving the engrafted word, that is able to save your souls;

⁸ for by grace ye are having been saved, through faith, and this not of you—of God the gift,

² of no one to speak evil, not to be quarrelsome—gentle, showing all meekness to all men,

² with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love,

⁸ but now put off, even ye, the whole—anger, wrath, malice, evil-speaking, filthy talking—out of your mouth.

¹² and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

¹⁹ So then, my brethren beloved, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, ²⁰ for the wrath of a man the righteousness of God doth not work;
