⁷ When He noticed how the guests were picking out the best places, He told them the following story: ⁸ "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding supper, never take the best place, for someone of greater distinction than you may have been invited, ⁹ so that your host may not come and say to you, 'Make room for this man'; and then in embarrassment you will proceed to take and keep the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when you are invited anywhere, go and take the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he may say to you, 'My friend, come up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow-guests. ¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." ¹² Then He proceeded to say to the man who invited Him: "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop the social custom of inviting your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors, for they may invite you in return and so you will be repaid. ¹³ But when you give a reception, make it your habit to invite people that are poor, maimed, crippled, or blind. ¹⁴ Then you will be happy, because they cannot repay you; you will be repaid at the resurrection of the upright."

²³ For everybody has sinned and everybody continues to come short of God's glory,

¹⁰ Then why should you criticize your brother? Or, why should you look down on your brother? Surely, we shall all stand before God to be judged, ¹¹ for the Scripture says: "'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee shall bend before me, and every tongue shall make acknowledgment to God.'" ¹² So each of us must give an account of himself to God.

² and like new-born babies thirst for pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up to final salvation,

¹⁰ Yes, I long to come to know Him; that is, the power of His resurrection and so to share with Him his sufferings as to be continuously transformed by His death,

²² Keep on obeying this message; do not merely listen to it, and so deceive yourselves.

¹⁷ Continue to obey and to be submissive to your leaders, for they are ever watching in defense of your souls, as men who will have to give account of their trust. Treat them in this way, so that they may work with joy and not with grief.

⁹ It is not the result of what anyone can do, so that no one can boast of it.

¹⁵ Do your best to present yourself to God an approved workman who has nothing to be ashamed of, who properly presents the message of truth.

²⁹ Put on my yoke, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls,

⁴ So then, whoever becomes as lowly as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven,

⁶ Therefore humbly submit to God's strong hand, so that at the proper time He may exalt you.

⁹ If we confess our sins, He is to be depended on, since He is just, to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from every wrong.

²¹ So strip yourselves of everything impure and all the evils prevailing around you, and in humble spirit welcome the message which when rooted in your hearts is able to save your souls.

² to stop abusing anyone, to be peaceable, fair-minded, showing perfect gentleness to everybody.

⁸ For it is by His unmerited favor through faith that you have been saved; it is not by anything that you have done, it is the gift of God.

² with perfect humility and gentleness, with patience, lovingly bearing with one another,

⁸ But now you too must once for all put them all aside -- anger, rage, malice, and abusive, filthy talk from your lips.

¹² Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹⁹ You must understand this, my dearly loved brothers. Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to get angry; ²⁰ for a man's anger does not produce the uprightness that God requires.
